#Trump has ordered the US navy to interdict any ship that has paid the Iranian Hormuz toll, which implies they will board/seize Chinese ships in international waters

Threatening genocide didn't work, but I guess he thinks threatening WW3 by dragging China into the conflict will be better.

Dilemma: is it better to let Trump take this (obvious strategic loss) as a win, so that he’s not tempted to go back in, or emphasise the obvious strategic loss so that he’s discouraged from ever doing something so stupid again?

@Quasit yes, he’s publicly mused about charging tolls himself. Well, “me and the Ayatollah”.

@rayckeith@techhub.social Cory Doctorow is a bright guy, and often has good insights, but this is at best a really misleading representation of binning.

Reading it in context, it’s part of a much larger post about all sorts of stuff. I just don’t think anyone can write competently about so much so quickly. It’s a curse of the internet that people feel pressure to produce so much stuff.

@albi I'm not sure of the full list of countries that paid the toll, but four nuclear powers (China, India, Pakistan, and France) are among the ones thought to have done so. He's got to #TACO this, it's completely unworkable.

@katedegerdon Tumblr and (if they choose to implement) Flickr will be using their own servers for their users, so the the cost will be just the increased interconnect activity. Which is WAY less than if those users joined Mastodon servers directly. So it's a great way to grow quickly.

@raantuva@is.nota.live I thought so too, but Tumblr is now owned by Automattic, which is also runs Wordpress.com. They are a forward-thinking and open-source friendly company, so it's a fairly natural move for them.

@kadin @pammystarr @katedegerdon Other implementations of ActivityPub are more efficient, so I understand. Pleroma for one. Still, I think masto.host offers a good deal, and their support is top-notch. Toot.io also offers managed hosting, but it's starts pretty high: https://toot.io/mastodon_hosting.html
toot.io - Fully Managed Mastodon Hosting

@rsalas @kadin @pammystarr @katedegerdon Pleroma's web-facing aspect could do with some work, yes. But also, is there a reason Pleroma instances seem to be run by mostly trollish dickheads?

@pammystarr @katedegerdon Possibly, (and I hope so) but there's also the possibility that a lot of celebrities will just join Tumblr. Which would be okay, but not ideal.

@kaydubatl@mastodon.world Tumblr is actually super-active, it never really died, and I think they've had an influx of many millions recently. Flickr I don't know about, but a lot of people have accounts there which I suppose they can start using again.

@d3cline@opalstack.social @mastodonmigration@mastodon.online Hey, yeah, sorry, this isn't for me, I have a managed server I'm happy with. I'm just imagining the people drifting around right now, who have no idea what anything you just said means, who might start their own Mastodon communities.

@d3cline@opalstack.social @mastodonmigration@mastodon.online That's a good product to have, but I think fully managed is really what's needed. I think you have a lot of people out there that probably know how to organise a community, but will be completely put-off by the tech stuff. Heck, I can programme and still went with fully managed hosting. Masto.host has a great product in this way, but are full!

@d3cline@opalstack.social @mastodonmigration@mastodon.online Yeah, I don't mean to be telling you your business, as I don't really know how viable it is for you, obviously. But I like to see hosting companies in this space. There are people I have had conversations with that I would have directed to masto.host, with their fully managed hosting, but I can't anymore because they're full. I did sees a couple setup before the deluge, so the market is there.

@guilevi@dragonscave.space Thanks for the answer. I'm going to put more effort into image descriptions when I think it's likely that my picture will spark some discussion on it's content (for context, I paint dinosaurs a lot, so sometimes a discussion on the palaeontological aspects comes up).

@SimonNovak Well, I agree it isn't great, but it is better than the genocidal threats. There is some method here. He's betting America can weather the storm of high oil prices than Iran can deal with the lack of exports, as a negotiating tactic. If he can get a nuclear deal, he can spin it as a win. There are problems, of course! One, Iran can export through other routes, and the high oil price might offset the reduced volume, and two, its incredibly risky with regards to China.

@badri While it's a risk, I think we're probably okay because Tumblr is a poor replacement for Twitter. Discussion is hard, the culture is weird and hilariously unprofessional. I'm hoping at leat one more big player jumps in, which will give the thing more equilibrium. We'll see!

@guilevi@dragonscave.space As a visual artist, I have not usually bothered with image descriptions, because if you can't see the picture, there's usually no point to the post. What does adding descriptions do for you in this context? Make timelines more comprehensible in general?
