I find it deeply disturbing how many people genuinely forgot how awful COVID was. It was more than just a “cold”, it was deadly and killed so many people. The lockdowns were objectively a good thing and prevented the already overloaded healthcare system from collapsing (barely)

@emily_rugburn@lgbtqia.space in modern Hebrew I only know the word “ahava” and the phrase “rosh gadol”, as well probably a few other words I’d catch if I heard them

One of the greatest cruelties of bipolar disorder is that positive events can cause a manic episodes just as much as a negative event, sometimes even more so.

@emily_rugburn@lgbtqia.space id be learning Biblical Hebrew and how to follow a religious service. But doing that would also give me a head up if I ever do learn modern Hebrew so there’s that. It’s be kind of like learning Shakespearean English first before learning conversational English, that is if christians used Shakespearean English for biblical services exclusively

One thing about me is am unapologetically pro-furry. They are kind. They pay for art. They are big on consent. They are the backbone of the internet and most open source spaces. I fuck with furries.

Gavi Talks Judaism: Yom Kippur
Yom Kippur, otherwise known as The Day of Atonement (literally translated as such), is one of the most important religious holidays in Judaism. It occurs ten days after Rosh Hashanah. It is a day of intense reflection. Tradition states that the Book of Life is opened on Rosh Hashanah, whereas the Book of Life is "sealed" on Yom Kippur, sealing our fate for the year to come. This is a deeply reflective holiday, and a somber one at that. One would argue this holiday isn't "celebrated", but rather is observed due to the intense nature of the holiday.
Starting at sundown to sundown, for those who are able we "afflict ourselves" by conducting a full fast. (We abstain from water and food as well as other things too. Such as wearing leather shoes, washing or bathing, applying lotion or creams, or sexual relations.) This begins a full 26 hours of fasting. (Those who are medically unable are advised to abstain from fasting.)
Beginning at Dusk, a Kol Nidre service occurs. We use a book called a Mahzor to recite prayers from. Over the course of the holiday at synagogue you say the Viddui prayer approximately 5 times, which is the confession prayer. Unetanah Tokef is recited at the highest point of the holiday services, which is a religious poem that translated to "We shall ascribe holiness to this day".
This is the only time that Jews prostate themselves during a prayer called the Avodah, meaning we literally go down on our knees and kneel. As well, there is a service called Yizkor memorial service, which is a way for the bereaved to honor to honor their deceased family publicly, instead of the usual practice of prayers being recited privately. It is some Jews tradition of those who have both living parents to leave this service as a sign of respect. The final prayer is the Neilah, in which the metaphorical heavenly gates are closed.
Immediately after concluding of the services and upon sundown, the fast is typically broken as a community with a community meal.
Typically you don't tell someone "Happy Yom Kippur" since it isn't really celebration, but rather an observance as described above. Instead its more appropriate and respectful to say "Have an easy fast" if you know the person is fasting, or if you aren't sure you can just say "Have a meaningful Yom Kippur."

So… next gavi talks Judaism post will obviously be about Yom Kippur. It’s gotta be. But I was curious about people’s thoughts about including antisemitism as potential topics? Like the history of antisemitism, how it manifests, blood libel and what it is etc
I kind of am leaning towards it since most Jewish education has antisemitism as a topic at least in some capacity. Like it’s so prolific societally it’s quite frankly unavoidable. And most jews learn about it when they are kids anyways from experience

Did you know that BMI was made by a mathematician, astronomer, statistician and sociologist (see: not a physician), and exclusively included white European men in his metric? He never meant it to be a medical tool either. This what people mean when they say BMI is inaccurate, sexist and racist, because it is.

antisemitism
I've noticed a lot of people online trying to refute the fact that Jews are an ethnoreligion, or just straight up not understanding it. It's hella weird. But yeah jews are more than just a religion. There's even jewish atheists!

It’s wild to me how women used to do most programming and it was reduced to “women’s work” until it became lucrative and then men stepped in and stole it. And now women struggle in the programming field with sexism and shit due to that

transphobia discussion, hot take
ive noticed sometimes in social situations cis people will seem to actively look for reasons to hate a trans person that makes their hatred socially acceptable. like one slight and then you're out kind of thing. and then once the trans person has made a mistake, the response is almost carceral in nature even if the cis people responding are leftist
am i hallucinating this? im a cis gay guy but even i have noticed it
