when my kids were in primary school (800m walk home) I had a discussion with another mother and she said she'd given her daughter a smartphone to protect her. When I asked "What from?" she answered "Pedophiles." And so I laughed and said "She's more likely to meet pedophiles on the internet with that phone than on the 5 minute walk home from school." That was not what she wanted to hear.

Men, I'm going to ask you to do something for all the women*, girls, enbies, and probably boys out there: go image search for Meta glasses (they're cooperating with Ray Ban) and then whenever you see somebody chatting up somebody and they're wearing those glasses, ask them about those glasses, ruin their video, make them feel uncomfortable.
These glasses have been used to harass, doxx and stalk people.

I don't know if there is such a manual in English but there's a German book titled How to illegally plant a forest (Wie man illegal einen Wald pflanzt) which cites all the relevant German laws and explains how exactly to create the conditions that make it hard or even impossible for an area to be built over.
Maybe someone could write one for their jurisdictions. Maybe there are government agencies that would (still) be delighted to help?

I understand telling one's followers that one has decided to block an account because they might want to do the same.
But announcing it to the person you're blocking? Why? Who do you think you are? That's like telling a random stranger at the supermarket that you disapprove of the things they're putting into their cart and will therefore no longer speak to them. So silly. And the only polite answer to that I can think of is "Oh, thank goodness! Yes, please!"

Now that my kids have phones to take to school (their passes for public transport are on there and sometimes teachers will open up the WiFi and let them do stuff and the secretaries are apparently hesitant to let kids use the landline to call parents when they need to), the most serious conversation I've had with them is to please not look at other people's screens... I remember Rotten dot com and I know that some kids like to shock others... so I've told them there are things you can't unsee and things that will cause nightmares for weeks.
We also have a rule that us parents know the passwords and will occasionally go through their messages. The phones are not to be taken to bed. The parental controls are set so there's a time-limit on the screen being on and on the apps that can be used.

For all EU citizens: There's a targeted revision of the Water Framework Directive being proposed. The mining and metal processing sectors have repeatedly voiced their difficulties in obtaining permits to carry out strategic projects because the directive means they can't just discharge pollutants into our rivers and lakes.
You can tell the commission about whether you'd like the mining industry to have an easier time polluting our rivers and lakes.

Seeing North Americans post about fan-filter-boxes built with box fans and HVAC filters and am reminded of someone back on Twitter (I think it was Amanda Hu) turning their entire home into a fan-filter-box by putting fans into windows on one side of the house and then putting the filters in windows on the other side of the house. Remember: you want the air to be blowing outward and being pulled inwards through the filters.

yeah, or (something which is safer for men than women to do) get between the two, engage him, and just give her a chance to get away.
The preferred way for anyone who lacks the physical presence to do that safely is of course going up and saying "Hey, Susan, thanks for waiting for me, let's go grab that coffee/ drink/ bus." and walk away with her.

depending on the restaurant, my Abuela will order tea and something that comes in a can... like a coke. She will then proceed to dip the cutlery in the tea for a while before drying it off. She will insist on pouring the drink from the can herself... after she has poured the tea in the glass, swished it around and then poured it out again.

To clarify "other people's screens might be showing disturbing stuff": I've told them to not just unthinkingly look at other people's screens because their friend or classmate might be trying to scare or shock them (and being a child themselves not understand what harm that can cause). Most kids at their school have a smartphone.

I'd gladly have that back for all school-aged children.
Guardians are required to report to the school if children have lice... the school is then required to inform all other parents of that class about there being a case of lice and the parents are then in turn required to confirm that they've checked their kids for lice. I'd like to know whether there are cases of Covid in my kids' classes and be required to confirm that I've at least RAT'ed my kids before sending them back in.

What definitely helped in my garden was watering in the morning instead of the evening so that the slugs did not have an entire night with the nice moist area. Also: looking under pots and other things and collecting them when I saw them and chucking them really far from the garden.

only slightly related but a possible alternative: in Spanish you say ojalá to express the wish that something should come about. It is, of course, related to the Arabic inshallah because parts of Spain were part of a Caliphate in the Middle Ages.

my brother's girlfriend has informed me that in Latvia they say "those who have no courgette/ zucchini in their pantry in the Summer have no friends" because: courgettes / zucchinis will produce a lot and you cannot eat it all yourself. You can have a plant in a large pot and it will be happy enough with a sunny spot.
You can also become the herbs person and make a Mediterranean herbs mix to give everyone: oregano, rosemary, thyme, parsley.

jedes Mal wenn ich frage "was macht Ihr denn wenn ein Sehbehinderter mit Karte zahlen will?" schauen sie erst verwirrt und wenn ich dann sage "Man kann nicht mal fühlen wo die Zahlen sind." geht ihnen ein Licht auf und sie müssen zugeben, dass es nicht ideal ist.
In einem Gebäude mit mehreren Praxen ist das Bedienpanel des Aufzugs eine Touch-Glasscheibe... da musste dann ein Metaldings mit Tasten mit Blindenschrift drauf geflanscht werden.

meine Schwester hatte während des Medizinstudiums Gürtelrose. Angeblich gar nicht so ungewöhnlich (bei denen die nicht gegen Windpocken geimpft wurden und dann Medizin studieren).
Meine jüngste Schwester hatte direkt nach den Windpocken Gürtelrose... als Kleinkind. Sie war deshalb auch wochenlang im Krankenhaus.
Damals gab es die Impfung schon.
Unsere Eltern sind beide Ärzte 🤷🏻♀️

ultimately, I think you can't really have 100% control over what your kids see... there will be friends' homes and screens... but keeping an open channel of communication and showing an interest in what they are doing, letting them tell you about what they've done with their screen-time, sitting down with them and non-judgementally let them show and tell you about all the things they like, will most likely make them feel like they can tell you if something goes wrong... or is weird...

wenn man einen Post mit einer Umfrage editiert, dann geht die Umfrage zurück auf 0% für alle möglichen Antworten (aus verständlichen Gründen) und diejenigen die schon geantwortet hatten können nicht mehr antworten... zumindest kann ich es nicht.
Aber nicht schlimm... Ich kenne und nutze GrippeWeb seit dem Winter 2019/20. Dachte mir damals es wäre bestimmt repräsentativer wenn wir mit den damals Kindergarten- und Grundschulkindern unsere wöchentlichen Angaben machen.

man sollte sich vllt auch angewöhnen den eigenen Post zu verschiedenen Uhrzeiten (oder an anderen Tagen) nochmal zu boosten (oder re-post). Zu unterschiedlichen Zeiten sind unterschiedliche Leute hier und es gibt keinen Algo der sagt "Dr. Luise Kuhfuß hat was vor 5h gepostet was für dich interessant sein könnte."
