I kind of love this slightly-too-late shot of a woodpecker, you can really see how streamlined they are in flight.

I don't think anyone will be surprised that cats that are bugging you on purpose are understimulated, and that letting them play more helps.

But what is good to know is that food puzzles and nonfood toys seem equally good, and that playing of either kind right before normal mealtime might be good (speculation that it simulates hunting activity).

RE: @fleuron@mas.to

I just went to a poetry workshop where we got a writing prompt, each wrote a poem for five minutes, tore up the poems and put them all in a bucket, grabbed a fragment, used that as the prompt for the next poem we wrote, and so on for multiple rounds. It was really cool, but really hard to lean into properly losing the old poem. (This time I took pictures before I ripped them up, as emotional preparation for fully losing them next time I try)

@RickiTarr Absolute game-changer for me was learning about "position of true rest" and making time to get as close to that as possible for even a few minutes a day. For me it's a soft seat, soft reclined back, feet up, arms supported, head supported and leaning back. I watch TV and read like this now. It helps even if imperfect but it's much better if all the cushions are exactly perfect, so learning how to tell and then adjust is hard. Trying to really not do things that make it worse unless they're very worth it. eg I go to the office as little as possible now and I let work buy me a fancy chair, in my spare time I try and go to events where I can move around often and where the seating options are supportive, I try and carry an absolute minimum (light shoes, light coat, no bag unless it's really necessary). A metal-framed rucksack with hip straps if I really need to carry something. Stabilising myself is a big difficulty for me so if there's seating for people who need it, like on the train, I admit to myself that I need it and I ask for it. The hardest part of all this is accepting my needs and valuing my wellbeing over what I think I "should" be able to do. Physio with someone who understands my condition and listens when I say something is too hard even if it sounds easy. Stretches and fascial release and foam rollers. Qigong and walking and not "working out". Wiggling in ways that probably look weird. Making sure I'm warm enough.

@mayintoronto For me it doesn't work to have those things digital, partly because if I can't see them I forget they exist, so I use physical items. I've got a whiteboard hanging above my monitor. And I used to have a big paper desk planner, too. And in my work notes I sometimes make a list of priorities for the week and that includes the short term to dos.

@Paul Yesterday I went to physio and on the way back I took the scenic route. The water was shallow and clear, there were loads of tiny fish, and I heard a bird I've never heard before as well as lots of the usual birds.

@hazelweakly@hachyderm.io Citymapper doesn't have exactly this, but when you've chosen a route with a specific connection, it does show the few connecting options before the recommended one and the few after, so you can see if there's a chance. What I also really want is an option like "hey so we suggested this journey because in theory it's the fastest, but we see that you've been delayed for a while so now it would be quicker to change route completely, quick get out!"

@mayintoronto I think I would say it pretty liberally, but I also describe cooking programmes as "Jamie Oliver told me..." or similar, so 🤷

@Hedgewizard @RickiTarr I went to an osteopath who specialises in difficult cases and she taught me. I think the idea is that your muscles and joints are in as relaxed a position as possible, not working to stay put. It can also be referred to as a neutral position. I struggled to find anything too but there's this very short piece https://dorsetpain.org.uk/SiteUploads/45/Uploads/B8.2%20True%20Rest.pdf

@celesteh I've got two old laptops that I'd be happy to pass on if I can figure out how to back them up first! And I think I've got a display port to HDMI adapter...

@britt For me I think a bucket can't be a basket at all. I could imagine a scenario where it's ambiguous if something is a basket or a box but I still think I'd come down on one and it couldn't be both. So no? For me :)

@killyourfm@layer8.space Haha spooky. To break the illusion, I suggest we get all the drivers to all swap to hydraulic-suspension Citroens, and then the cars will settle to true level instead of sitting parallel to the floor.

@debruine Sounds familiar, you're def not alone. I have found it helpful to think about executive dysfunction as increasing as stress increases, for everyone, but that people differ in their slopes and intercepts, and people differ in their subjective discomfort with a given level of executive dysfunction. Hope you're not finding it too uncomfortable and can find strategies to help you!

@Troggie I took ibuprofen at the start of my appointment, as instructed, and when they started putting it in I immediately threw up from the pain. That's never happened to me before. Afterwards I was faint and needed to lie down. By the time they were closing I still couldn't walk the ~100metres from the exam room back home and had to get my partner to come and pick me up. Rest of the day I could only lie on a rocking chair and cry. It was not as bad as slipping a disc, but I'm sure it's the second most painful experience of my life. Getting it taken out was a breeze, though! I'm not sure if that was the doctor's expertise, or the fact I took cocodamol, and took it a bit earlier before my appointment to try and avoid the issue of throwing it up.
