Shingles itself is awful: painful and even mentally debilitating. So please consider getting the vaccine.

Turns out that not polluting your home with fossil gas works 2x better than medications for treating asthma.

They donkeys like to play with big dog toys. The coyotes do too and they try to steal the donkeys’ toys during the night. If more than two coyotes get in on the heist they sometimes succeed. But usually not.

Some good local #asstodon news. Since having a bad tooth extracted a couple days ago Manuel has resumed his usual vigorous play activities. Which mostly center around biting things.
The biting flies are fierce this time of year and they zero in mercilessly on equine legs. Trying the donkeys out out with some pony leggings for protection.
Manuel: “Hmmm, I dunno, man.”

Soaking up excess power is every bit as important for the stability of a power grid as having enough energy when the demand is high. There are electric grid operators in places with lots of solar and wind installed who are paying people several hundred dollars a year to let them put a battery in their back yard. These homes become small, silent, perfectly clean neighborhood power plants in the evening when the sun is down and people are firing up ovens and doing laundry.

It looks like a tug-o-war game, but it’s really more of a dance. They go round and round in a circle like this trying to keep the band taut without either pulling it away from the other. If one loses hold of the band the other immediately holds it up to him to restore the connection. #asstodon
Something interesting I learned about donkeys yesterday: it’s very hard to get a hypodermic needle in their neck. As a vet you have exactly one chance. This is because donkeys have mobile veins! They can retract their jugular vein behind a very thick, tough sheath. They can even temporarily shut down cutaneous blood flow. This is a capability most mammals don’t have! It makes donkeys highly resistant to attacks by predators and gives them special ability to function at high elevations.

The most painful part of this is the gnawing sense that I *can’t not* be a part of the problem. I can offer only a technical alternative to a problem that is not a technical problem. At a fundamental level it’s hard not to feel that however I may protest or offer an alternative, I’m recruited against my will. The kind of economic change we need is just so fundamental.

There’s an unwritten treaty in the Fediverse that the #asstodon hashtag is for donkey lovers and “safe for work”. While I would never try to enforce it, that in 2.5 years the treaty has been so rarely broken is, to my mind, a triumph of global online cooperation.

Suddenly I find I’m on a wild goose chase.
My mother, the last member of my family aside from me, is in very serious condition and also in deep, practiced denial about it. She refuses any kind of medical care for religious reasons that I do not share, putting me in a very difficult spot as her medical power of attorney. Everything is extraordinarily fucked up in ways I won’t even try to explain. I may not be sharing much of anything here during this time.
Stupid human tricks. The guys at the feed store offered with a snicker to put another one on top.
Can anyone recommend a #Canadian employment attorney that is good and has a reasonable rate? I am in the US and (if some $ comes through) am looking into hiring a person who happens to be Canadian. Apparently it's complicated.

@solar_chase@mastodon.green yes. And I also look forward to a world where communities are building their own microgrids, generating power close to the loads. For now, hats off to the folks who enable their home batteries and rooftop solar to dispatch power to the grid when everyone needs it.
Ok there’s actually *three* reasons I have trouble hiring. The third one is that I don’t want to be anyone’s boss. I don’t even want this company to be what people think of when they hear the word “company.”
If I’m honest with myself, starting this venture was not so much an exercise in “entrepreneurship” for me as it was a “going on strike.” But that is hard to do for 2 1/2 years. It’s lonely. We can’t gain people’s trust if we can’t support them. Oh yeah: and we can’t live without income.

Ha! Grammar so egregiously bad I couldn’t not correct it.
Lately if I post at all it happens while I’m about some barn task and am being pestered by donkeys or the horse to give them attention. Takes me ten minutes to write 10 words, and then I can’t be bothered to read my text before the send button is mashed by a donkey nose. Sniff. Grunt. Send!

@yngmar he’s also 26 years old and running out of teeth, so he just can’t chew hay that is too coarse and stemmy. This stuff has a lot of seed heads (which taste bitter to a horse) but at least it’s soft.
