Now that Zensical Studio is out and humming, I'm picking up work on ZRX again, the heart of Zensical. Working hard on closing the remaining gap to MkDocs, so most projects can move to Zensical in the coming weeks/months ☺️

Python Markdown is too strict about link labels. We're working on fixing that in Zensical's new Rust-based Markdown implementation ☺️

No more [`module.symbol`][module.symbol] workarounds.

The Slow Collapse of MkDocs

A very well researched article answering the question why MkDocs as we know it is dying. Recommended read, especially if you or your organization depend on it.

Codeberg now bans projects that mostly consist of AI-generated code. It's not yet clear where the line between AI-assisted and AI-generated projects will be drawn, and how it will be enforced.

We got some heat for warning our users that MkDocs 2.0 won't have a plugin system in Material for MkDocs.

The maintainer just confirmed it again and is actively working on MkDocs 2.0 – no plugins, by design. Markdown + templating only.

RE: @zensical@fosstodon.org

Just shipped a massive new update for @zensical@fosstodon.org Studio!

We’re pushing hard on docs-as-code: workspace intelligence for Markdown, transitive snippet awareness, anchor/link refactors, and much better navigation.

Still early, but this is the direction.

Just finished the impl of a central module system concept: Specificity. If multiple selectors match a resource, ordering becomes important. This allows for super fine-grained module interdependencies 😎

Pretty happy with how this turned out! We found so many issues in our own docs when dogfooding – unresolved links and unused definitions that had been silently hiding for months. 😅

If you missed it: Python Markdown has documented all of its extensions as being in maintenance mode. Good timing: we just rewrote Python Markdown in Rust, and it already powers Zensical Studio. It’s 10-20x faster and will be Open Sourced later this year. https://github.com/Python-Markdown/markdown/pull/1613

Making great progress on ZRX, the foundation for the module system that we're cooking up for @zensical@fosstodon.org – it'll offer several degrees of freedom, and allow for type-safe composition (= plugin interop) – something that MkDocs (now dead) never delivered.

@simondueckert @zensical We don't commit to ETAs for plugins — implementation order is driven by demand. The blog plugin is currently Tier 2 in our plugin support roadmap, meaning Tier 1 plugins take priority. That said, if it's needed by Spark members, we'll move it up. 🙂 https://zensical.org/compatibility/plugins/#mkdocs-plugin-support

@claudius and then there're those that go: "let's make it extra safe by picking 6.1" 😉 Priorities make a huge difference, since Python Markdown has a lot of internal state that gets shuffled around, so changing them can lead to incorrect results. Our upcoming component system will include a much, much simpler to understand Markdown AST visitor and transformer API. The cases where ordering is important will be reduced by 90%, and those will not be handled by magic numbers but explicit ordering.
