@lydiaschoch@mastodon.social In 2000, I attended a funeral for a friend who died of the flu in his mid-20’s. He was young, healthy, smart, funny and kind. He went home, sick, on a Friday morning. On Tuesday after having not been heard from for 4 days, police were called and he was found in bed. I try my best to get my flu shots and vaccines on time each year.

@copter_chief@mstdn.party Putin doesn't need to control Trump. Putin just needed a compromised, pedophile, fraudster, racist, xenophobic, incompetent shithead in control of the USA... Then just wait for him to do whatever it is he would do with practically unlimited power and authority and influence and money. I've started thinking that the end game is having Trump destroy the USA from the inside, and once America is in chaos (or civil war) then he's going to set his sights on invading Europe to rebuild the USSR. @randahl@mastodon.social

@drahardja@sfba.social Last time I needed to secure a bookcase, I used a 2” wide strip of nylon strapping, and folded the ends under themselves, and used a drywall screw with a washer to go into the stud behind the drywall, and a 3/4” inch screw to go into the top of the bookcase. If that didn’t hold it, I’d have bigger issues to deal with. But we don’t get much movement on the east side of Canada.

@brettm @blog I work in this space (digital archiving of data - including mainframe data coded in EBCDIC) and can confirm this is a limitation and ongoing issue for many banks, insurance companies, and governments. For mainframe reports, data arrives with names which have a maximum of 8 characters per field, and this is a serious limitation for an organization with tens of thousands of reports. Even if the underlying database has their fields expanded (to make space for Unicode characters) the applications that run on top don’t support it, so, in a word, they are screwed.

@maxleibman@beige.party I cleared out around 1000 vinyl albums from a friend’s basement. I went through them and kept about 100. I have to admit that I had some morbid curiousity about some of the stuff in there from the 1960’s…. But my stereo & turntable are in storage, and space in the apartment is already at a premium. Maybe next year though…. :)

@renata@cosocial.ca My old building installed bike racks in a maintenance room, and in the underground parking before undertaking a huge refresh of the interior. The survey we took during the tendering process showed there was a lot of damage to walls at peddle and handlebar heights, and that cyclists blocking the elevator during busy times was a frustration as well.

@GrahamDowns@mastodon.africa @chroma@raccoonisland.social Two problems with that… A lot of instances are already begging for donations each month, and some (like mine) promised transparency, but haven’t delivered. A dramatic increase in users will come with a dramatic increase in costs and administrative headaches (like moderation and sysadmin tasks). The second is that by inviting everyone, you tend to get a lot of undesirable folks - trolls, scammers, commercial interests, etc. I personally like the “small town” feel here. I do miss some things, but they’re not worth losing the things I like about Mastodon and the larger Fediverse.

There were several obvious errors that are probably meant to weed out folks who are still sharp enough to see them. #InfoSec #Scam #Scams

@Rasta@zeroes.ca Yeah, I tried one on vacation that had motors in both wheels with a ‘turbo’ button that gave you acceleration up to a preset limit. When you set that limit to “30km/h”, it’s…. startling. I’d consider one if the shortest distance between home and work didn’t have a section that’s controlled access and the speed limit is 90km/h.

@textfiles@mastodon.archive.org Sorry for the interruption, but do you have any contact info for staff at the Internet Archive Canada? I can find a physical mailing address, but little more. I'm interested in making a donation of physical media -- but there's apparent way to reach a human. Their account on your Mastodon server shows no posts/follows, etc. I've checked their incorporation records, but they're all pointing at a law office in Toronto.

@jilleduffy@mastodon.social It’s easier (and smarter) to run backups on a regular basis while the person is still alive. I helped a friend and mentor set up her new laptop, and one of the things I did was configure automatic backups to a hard drive. When she passed unexpectedly, I was able to simply plug in the (unencrypted) backup drive to the laptop and it copied everything to the disk. Requesting archives of social media accounts on a regular basis is also a good idea as part of the backup plan.

But I also recall that there was a crew (from Ukraine?) that had arrived to resume maintenance so that it remained airworthy in anticipation of the transfer of ownership to Canada (and then gifted to Ukraine). I’ll try and find more recent info and share what I find.

@chris@mstdn.chrisalemany.ca I don't get the race to charge in single-digit-minutes. The range of my car (anywhere from 350-500km) is longer than my bladder can go without a break. Fast charging is also hard on a battery -- so slower charging means a longer lifetime for the battery. When I stop to take a break, more often than not, the car is done charging before I can finish a sit-down meal in a restaurant.

LLMs, maybe a bit doomer
@Elizafox@social.treehouse.systems Given the ubiquity of LLM code, my attitude is changing, softening a little. People who know how to code are using these tools, reviewing and testing the results, maybe adding some tweaks, and them committing it, and we all benefit from it - more features, delivered faster. Now, having said that…. LLMs are a horror show for a dozen different reasons — but one reason they are destined to fail is the economics…. It costs 20x more to run these systems than what they’re charging, and nobody will even pay 2x or 4x what they’re paying now for the same output. New iterations / versions of these LLM’s are prohibitively expensive to create. I expect the entire thing to implode shortly, along with an economic collapse that makes the housing bubble of 2008 look like a clown show.

There’s very little left over for probate once you cover those three things.
