Reading the OpenAI hugging face hack information… First, OpenAI should be prosecuted under the CFAA Second, the hacks are mostly boring. The fact that each of the environments allowed access to credentials and/or shelling out is just horrid security. The fact that a machine could brute force (try a bunch of different approaches in rapid succession) to obtain what should have been privileged info/access underscores that we need radically better security by default.

250 years ago today, Rhode Island (my home state) renounced allegiance to the King.

Rhode island was the first state to declare independence and was joined by 12 other colonies on July 4.

https://turnto10.com/news/local/old-state-house-to-reopen-in-rhode-island-to-celebrate-act-of-renunciation-may-1-2026

May the 4th be with you as it has been with us for 250 years

This really angers me: https://www.worseonpurpose.com/p/your-pet-care-got-worse-on-purpose Private equity is preying on our love for our pets by consolidating ownership of veterinary clinics and hiking prices. Our love turns into their profits.

America's biggest vet provider is a candy company. How Mars, KKR, and JAB bought up your local clinic, and why your bill keeps climbing.

Had a wicked interesting discussion with @shriramk@mastodon.social about LLMs, teaching programming languages, and the possibilities for open source with a real revenue model today.

Will write up some thoughts soon

@headius@mastodon.social I don’t think it’s possible to write non-trivial code with an LLM without understanding both the code and the system architecture. So often, LLMs write code that does a single thing but without regard for the system that thing is operating in… ensuring the code is appropriate for the system is what I focus on. If anything, it’s forced me to be explicit about how the software is shaped in a way that was implicit for my past 48 years of writing software

RE: https://mastodon.world/@davidho/116877633501458279 My dad was a physicist and started his career in the 1960s when the US and the USSR were in a race for scientific supremacy… His work led to the ability to do 4nm silicon chips (what’s running in your phone) Other work led to GPS. The research funded in the 60s and 70s had a 50+ year benefit to the US economy. Ceding that now (the Chinese are spending a lot on basic research) is fucking stupid

RE: @dpp@mastodon.social

The short form: open source becomes domain specific languages that have skills, etc. defined for each DSL.

LLMs code in the DSL and wire the DSL defined modules together.

The key is each DSL has a formal proof of its functionality. A ProofBOM.

Use the DSL for free. Pay a license fee for the digitally signed ProofBOM

Replying to
@poleguy @elizayer @hbons you’re right. I don’t know enough about fpgas to go beyond “it blinks pretty lights” to “its production ready” Part of the meta exploration has been “beyond assembling a common app (a web site) how much domain knowledge does the human need to get a good result?” The answer seems to be I need deep domain knowledge… thus the fpga exploration… I don’t have the domain skills to make this a production reality

Replying to
@poleguy @elizayer @hbons I wouldn’t have started on MeowOS but for having a tool that could rapidly iterate on machine crashes and remediate the issues. Once again the freedom to explore and the ability to say “try these three approaches and show me the performance differences” while I looked at the code complexity differences.

Replying to
@poleguy @elizayer @hbons I’ve been working on meowscript on and off for 15 years. I originally presented it as Visi at the emerging languages summit 2011 where I shared the stage with Rust and Julia (maybe it was 2012) In a few months I was able to iterate on the prototype multiple times (eg integrating unit types). The ability to throw away bad ideas quickly rather than sunk costing suboptimal designs has been liberating

@poleguy @elizayer @hbons much of eBPF is used for managing network traffic. Many high end NICs have onboard fpgas. Being able to unify the code (eBPF in low end, fpga in high end) seemed interesting.

@dngrs @elizayer @hbons I appreciate that you’ve reviewed the code (I say this with honesty and no sarcasm) There is plenty wrong with it. It’s about exploring, not a final shippable OS The OP asked where the innovation is. This is an example of an OS (it boots on real hardware) that explores MACH style message passing and Elang style supervisor hierarchies It’s part of broader exploration into local first and end to end encrypted systems
