Australian living in Rovaniemi.
May occasionally post in Finnish - be kind! I'm still learning the language.
Music enjoyer. Lego builder. Cat visitor.
My posts do not necessarily represent my own views, let alone those of any other person/entity. I’m just mucking about online.
I love corgis but had never got to spend time with one before yesterday.
He’s 14 years old, slightly blind, and was utterly convinced that a ball had been hidden from him somewhere in the apartment and it was his job to find it.
We had a ball, but he’d chewed it into oblivion within the first five minutes of arriving. 😄
He spent a lot of time lying on my feet demanding scratches. If I stopped he waved his tiny leg at me.
Best. Guest. Ever. 💜💜💜
Two hours until I’m back on the train to Rovaniemi.
I can’t wait to go home.
This is the first time I’ve travelled on my own since I got married.
I’ve liked browsing nerd stores without feeling like I’m wasting her time. And I saw ‘Project Hail Mary’ last night on my own because she doesn’t want to sit through a 2:36 hour movie at the cinema. Totally understandable.
But given the choice, I’d always travel with my favourite person. It’s so much nicer. 💜
Haven’t read the article but from experience I’d say you can *definitely* eat too much fibre.
At ten years of age, I got really into seeing how many Vita-Brits I could eat at once for breakfast. The standard amount was 2 bricks, and I added one more each morning.
At 6 or 7 bricks I shat myself with such force that I was virtually blown inside out.
It was some time before I had the courage to eat Vita-Brits again.
I had a dream last night where I visited a shopping centre. It was by a beach, suspended on a massive structure above sand dunes.
Rik Mayall was inside, doing a one-man show in the middle of an auditorium.
I yelled to him ‘Rick! The People’s Poet!’ and he gave me a thumbs-up.
😢
My first Lego Technic set couldn’t be anything other than the Batmobile.
Probably the fiddliest thing I’ve built so far. Some very irritating sections, but quite satisfying overall.
It now joins its tiny counterpart in my Batmobile garage. 😁
I’ve always found it funny how NZ is right next to Australia, but never gets the same ‘upside down’ treatment.
An old friend came to visit! He brought a new friend! 💜💜💜
My wife got the Alfred J Kwak theme song stuck in her head this morning so insisted we watch the first two episodes.
A magpie named ‘Grabbie’ whose habit of stealing things is explained as ‘it’s simply in their nature’ was a hell of a choice. Especially with this character design. 😑
I made two purchases this week.
The first was the Lego Technic ‘The Batman’ Batmobile set from 2021. It’s no longer available but I got it at a reasonable price from a Bricklink reseller.
The second was a Dyson Gen5 vacuum cleaner. Our current hand-held vacuum cleaner is useless, and I hate how our full-size Electrolux gets stuck on things.
To be honest, I’m most excited about the new vacuum cleaner. 😄
I noticed a sheet of aluminium foil on the kitchen counter this morning and my first thought was ‘I wonder if that would work as a coffee filter’. ☹️
Project Hail Mary was really good though. Absolutely beautiful. Good story. Really cool sets. I liked the alien. Some of it was a little cheesy but I could overlook that because I had fun and felt emotionally invested in the characters.
Most importantly, my attention didn’t drop at any point for the entire film. It’s 2h 36m long. Even ‘The Batman’ or ‘Batman Begins’ have points where I drifted. So I was impressed that PHM held me all the way through. 🍿👍🎥🚀
Wall-length curtains to hide the actual size of the window is a mean hotel trick.
Almost had a heart attack this morning when a massive pile of snow fell from the roof and slammed into the ledge outside my office window.
Spring is a dangerous time indeed. 😣
- I woke up with a headache this morning because I ate too many chips last night but didn’t drink enough water.
- My main concern when recently buying a new pair of sneakers was arch support.
- I’m looking forward to using the new wooden spoons we found at today’s handcraft fair.
I don’t like to accept that I’m turning 40 next month but all the signs are there.😭
Why not listen to the 12” version of Underworld’s ‘Underneath the Radar’ on repeat this morning?
You don’t really have anything better to do anyway.
Let’s take a train to Sweden! Tööt tööt! 🚂
These last few days I’ve had a really strong memory of seeing New Order play at the Sydney Opera House, but now that I think about it, I think I’m actually remembering Hot Chip.
I think the new series of Taskmaster is going to be a good one. Armando Iannucci, Amy Gledhill, and the owner of my all-time favourite Welsh accent, Joanna Page. 💜📺
Today’s the first day warm enough to have the door and windows open all afternoon.
It’s easy to forget how nice that is. 🌞
Sometimes my posts to Mastodon don’t go through and they end up sitting in drafts for ages without me realising. No idea if it’s the app (Ice Cubes or the Mastodon server.
I know the social media algorithms are creepy and invasive and primarily to blame for why the world’s gone wrong.
However, I cannot deny the fact that it *gets* me.
The doctor called me while I was out walking.
I had a box of pastries in my hand and was being blown about by strong winds. Sand was flying in my eyes and mouth.
Then, mid-call, my phone resumed the audio I'd been listening to - the 'Rothko' monologue from Chris Morris's 'Blue Jam'.
Most frustrating phone call ever. 😓
Cherry Red have a new Britpop compilation out next month!
The first volume “Popscene” covering the rise and of Britpop from ‘89-‘94 was excellent.
“All You Good People” will cover ‘95-‘99, which is when Britpop collapsed and things got weird.
It’s also when I first became aware of alternative music, so I’m really looking forward to it. 💜🎵🎧

If we still lived in Sydney I’d 100% be seeing Split Enz next week. Very jealous of everyone who’ll be there.
Neil and Tim Finn are my favourite musical brothers. They’re responsible for some of the greatest pop songs ever recorded. 🇳🇿🎸💜
The Guardian's Consumer Champions column features numerous examples of airlines doing everything they can to avoid refunding passengers affected by tragic circumstances. They can be so heartless.
Meanwhile, because our journey home from Stockholm last month was delayed due to a cancelled flight, Finnair has offered 500€ compensation. Spending 3.5 hours in Helsinki Airport made our entire return trip cost just 50€.
Seems slightly disproportionate tbh. But I’m not arguing.
😄This week's Guardian ‘Consumer Champion’ column has yet another fantastic bit of energy provider logic. A reader was billed for someone else's house. 😄
I don’t hate the song that won the Eurovision Song Contest this year. I just don’t understand how it won.
What was it about that song which connected with so many countries?
Related to that last post, there’s a new series of the BBC’s ‘The Rise and Fall of..’ podcast out now which covers the rise and fall of MADCHESTER.
Loads of stories involving New Order, Stone Roses, Happy Mondays, Factory Records/The Haçienda, etc.
The final episode is unnecessary and self-indulgent, but it’s otherwise a good listen if you’re into that sort of thing. 💜🎧
I could have sworn that KAJ and 'Bara Bada Bastu' represented Sweden at Eurovision in 2024. But it was only last year. It feels so long ago. 🙁
Maybe it’s time for me to join those Mandela Effect crazies and insist that my memory is correct; it's reality which has changed somehow.
The new album from Lime Garden came out yesterday. They’re super cool. 💜🎧 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Y_Ag9zgY2QM
This morning’s discovery: the music during the closing credits for Rage is the extended 12” mix of ‘Speed Your Love to Me’ by Simple Minds.
It’s a new addition to my ‘80s 12” Extended Remixes’ playlist, and as soon as it started I was transported right back to Saturday mornings in the early 2000s.
I’m 15 years old. Eating toast on the couch in our living room. The Rage Top 50’s just ended. I wish Recovery was still on TV. I should probably do something. 😣
Spent the last two days wondering why my iPhone battery was draining so fast. No apps reported abnormalities, even iOS said my battery usage was normal. A real mystery!
Turns out the charge limit had somehow been moved from 95% to 80%. 😕
This morning’s banana was somehow both soft *and* crunchy. Absolutely horrible. 🍌
Has your town dressed a prominent historical monument as a monster?
