@Blender@mastodon.social The need for multiple clarifications and rewordings should tell you that THIS IS A BAD IDEA. The only way to save this is to take a clear stance and refuse to ever work with any AI company.

@Blender@mastodon.social That sounds like a horrible idea. Even if Anthropic doesn't get any influence, this is a massive blow to your public image.

@smeg In my personal experience, the best option for native German speakers is to speak French with a really thick German accent and within two sentences they'll tell you in perfect accent-free German that they've lived half their life in Alsace and are currently working for a German company.

@marekfort@mastodon.online Honestly, I wouldn't be opposed to making everything that contains an LLM 18+... or 180+ for that matter, as long as shoving that stuff into absolutely everything becomes less and less attractive.

@rorystarr Which makes SpaceX‘s other achievements all the more impressive. Despite being led by a the personified midlife crisis, their engineers have created the Falcon 9 which is the first partially reusable rocket ever and one of the most reliable rockets we currently have. I still have hope for Starship (though not as part of a Mars mission) but it could probably get done much more efficiently if Elon just learned that his contribution is money, not engineering.

@yvan @frameworkcomputer You're aware that you're posting this on a platform that's built on Ruby on Rails which was originally created by DHH, right? Sometimes it's okay to appreciate a good piece of software even if you disagree with its creator because honestly, almost every public figure has caused *some* drama in their life. It's not like DHH has commited any serious crime, at least to my knowledge.

@gabek @frameworkcomputer @yvan you may not be but the person I responded to is on an instance that runs Mastodon which is in fact built on RoR. Your post is not a gotcha but underlining my point: if they dislike DHH so much that even linking to one of his projects warrants such a reaction, they should probably move to an instance that runs on something else - of which there are plenty.

@BillySmith I've heard of that story before and if it's true, I could really have used a team like that at my old job. Boss had a habit of announcing new products to the whole world - including pricing and release date - before he told the R&D team that he even had the idea for that project. @rorystarr

@elexia@catcatnya.com @whitequark@social.treehouse.systems There are repair shops whose whole business model used to be buying old/broken computers on ebay, repairing them and reselling them for a reasonable price. They basically can't do that anymore because everything on the market is now either stripped clean or way too expensive.

@donty@mastodon.tetaneutral.net @martenson@mastodon.world That's the thing. I wouldn't even object to AI training on copyrighted material, same as I wouldn't object to a human studying that same material to improve their skills. But I would expect anything that comes out of it to be owned by the AI, not the company who made the AI nor the human who fed prompts into it. With the AI not being a legal person, everything it does becomes public domain. See https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Monkey_selfie_copyright_dispute for a similar argument being made for animals.

@martenson@mastodon.world Making it so the unmodified output can't be directly used for profit sounds like a good compromise to me. Artists can still use it as prototypes, inspiration or whatever and transform it into parts of their own work. At the same time, the bare AI-generated stuff would not be copyrightable, disincentivizing companies from cutting out the artists completely. (again to be continued)

@donty@mastodon.tetaneutral.net @martenson@mastodon.world Of course this shouldn't apply to cases where AI just directly copies a copyrighted work. But that's nothing new either. If I hire a guy on fiver to write me a fantasy story and he hands me a copy of LotR, surely I can't just use that as if it were not copyrighted and blame him for all legal consequences. But those cases are rare and mainly happen when you explicitly ask it to do so. Most outputs are probably original enough to fall under fair use or similar clauses.

@martenson@mastodon.world Photographers feared they would become obsolete when anybody can buy a cheap camera, Photoshop was once seen as a threat to traditional artists and music labels feared that cassettes would be the death of commercial music. None of that happened. They all became tools in a new generation's toolbox. And as you said, "AI" doesn't have much personality. That's good. It means "AI" needs to be combined with an artist's personality to make something good while the rest sinks to the bottom.

@martenson@mastodon.world In my personal opinion, the only thing really threatened by "AI" are stock photos and people who write SEO texts for websites. And I say that as a photographer who has sold stock photos before. At the same time I'm excited about things we just can't do by hand. Imagine a video game where "AI" doesn't replace hand-written and voice acted dialogue but fills the gaps in places the writers couldn't foresee, at the same time freeing up resources for the scenes that are actually important.

@martenson@mastodon.world Or even shorter: "AI" isn't the problem. Greedy executives who value a quick buck higher than creative expression are. Therefore I'd rather regulate those executives than a mere tool that could just as well kickstart a young artist's career and give us something we've never seen before.

@david_chisnall It is, once again, a solution looking for the right problem. LLMs seem to have some uses where they're better than other solutions (translation might be one) but those are too niche to sell them to everyone on the planet. So they try to sell them as search engines, copywriters, programmers and a dozen other things just to attract more companies even if LLMs are a poor choice for their needs.

@nxskok @david_chisnall Mixing up homonyms is a problem that many other machine translation solutions also have. I assume that LLMs, which by their design are built around guessing plausible next words, could have a higher chance of getting it right than other approaches. But yes, still a problem, hence the "might". My point was that there is probably a very narrow field of usefulness for LLMs (whatever it actually is) but not enough to make money so techbros push them where they don't fit.

Do you know that feeling when you've found an obvious bug and want to create a support ticket but the automated support system wants you to check things that you've already mentioned in your initial message before referring you to a human instead of just opening a ticket for the software team to read?

This message has been brought to you by #deezer family stopping playback when a different family member hits play on their own profile.

@bignose@awful.systems @e8d79@discuss.tchncs.de All I can find is that Omarchy is neither on the list of recommended distributions nor on the list of sponsorships. Hyprland is still listed as sponsored at 7200€ per year though the list hasn't been updated for a couple of months. It would be really nice to get an official statement from @frameworkcomputer@fosstodon.org on this. Their products are excellent and we have multiple FW13 in this household but the way they have been handling this leaves a really bad taste.

@martenson@mastodon.world I'm quite aware what current "AI" is under the hood. Still the fact is that it's here and we can't just stuff it back into Pandora's box so we'd better find a way to regulate it in a way that facilitates use cases where it actually does things that wouldn't be feasible for a human artist or writer and at the same time doesn't endanger those same artists and writers. Make it a tool they can use instead of one that replaces them. (to be continued)

@martenson@mastodon.world Which has nothing to do with the legality of LLMs but with the endless greed of some people who use them and the overall shittiness of the US healthcare system. Don't take away everyone's toys just because a few idiots use them for selfish reasons. By the same logic we would have to ban stock markets, rental homes and a lot of things rich people use to stuff their pockets and unfortunately I don't see many people advocating for that.
