we've also been guilty of this in the past. we can do better. sometimes the best thing to do is just to leave something be. even if you think you're right. if you give it time maybe you will find that you actually weren't right anyways and you'll save yourself the embarrassment.

the more privileged you are the more likely you are to fall into this, so you should always consider if there's maybe something you're not seeing simply cause you were insulated from it by your relative privilege. this is still true if you are marginalized in one way but privileged in others.

@jaseg @drmorrisj @hannorein @daisy I think when cheating is common there's a larger underlying issue at play there that is much more difficult to address than trying to make cheating more difficult. it would require restructuring incentives drastically beyond just academia. as such it won't be done unless there's a large scale restructuring of society.

@pathunstrom for those kinds of people: it's always fine too question rules on your own time. that's good and fine and healthy to do cause in the process you can learn why rules are in place and what rules and values are important to the community and to you. but if you join a community and then try to re-litigate every rule they established without even knowing why they exist or how they work in practice, you become a problem for those trying to run a community smoothly with limited time and energy. be respectful of other people's time and energy and make an effort to understand things before you bother them about it. also the hypothetical fringe case you're making up in your head to immediately question a rule probably doesn't actually exist in real life or isn't that fringe in the first place (see the part about where those going to bat for the freeze peach of fascists or who are going to argue why xy bigot isn't technically a fascist, etc. are going to be toxic for a community regardless of whether they themselves are fascists). if you find yourself wildly disagreeing with the rules of a community immediately that community probably isn't for you and instead of getting yourself banned trying to argue why they should change every rule for you you can save yourself and them the time and trouble and just not join. it's always fine to just leave.

@joe @emilymbender you being amazed by corporate advertising is definitely the definition of objectivity. I know you think you're more clever than the experts, but you dumping your opinions about how one corporate product is actually good unlike the competition is hardly gonna convince anyone else of that, least of all the expert you're trying to argue with after saying you won't argue.

@herve@framapiaf.org @daisy@cloudisland.nz except an LLM doesn't know why it did anything. it cannot know. as far as it produces an "explanation" as to why it supposedly did something this is entirely post hoc. it's producing a string of words based on the context and training data. as such it can only be correct by accident and isn't a good tool for learning.

@crow@gts.apicrim.es @koex@chaos.social @ezri@shitpost.trade yeah we would love to be able to speak Low Saxon, our grandpa's first language. unfortunately we have no community to speak it with and we live in Austria now. the green owl isn't really of any help for actually getting fluent in anything, it's just optimized for keeping you on the app. we have seen some stuff on how to learn more effectively, but we haven't really had the motivation and executive function to try it for ourselves. but like Anki flashcards are good. making them yourself it's actually better for learning than using a set you find online. adding in more than just text also helps. writing things out by hand can also be helpful for memorization.

@ezri@shitpost.trade @koex@chaos.social if you're starting with English I think it's probably easier overall than German? if you already know German it's pretty easy to get started, but getting proficient at any language is hard. idk if it's easier than Afrikaans. don't think there's many learning Frisian or Low Saxon as a second language that aren't already speaking some kind of High German or Dutch.

@koex@chaos.social @ezri@shitpost.trade real. every time we've been like "trying to improve our Dutch" a Dutch person chimes in being like "why would you ever learn this God forsaken language?" I mean we learned it for uni and we just kinda wanted it to not go to waste now that we aren't in the Netherlands anymore to get practice.

@cR0w@infosec.exchange we don't need browsers to be the everything application with 50 million features and they should stop trying to be that. we also don't need operating systems to be as bloated and buggy as they are getting but that's another conversation.

Replying to
@cR0w@infosec.exchange modern browsers are too complex (literally more so than some entire operating systems) and are becoming essentially unmaintainable and unsafe as they are pushing more and more features over security. browsers are generally the biggest attack surface for the vast majority of users, so security should be the number 1 priority and it isn't and hasn't been for a while.

@KimCrayton1 seeing this reflected so much in how people dismiss the suffering of others cause they aren't looking enough like they are suffering. I'm also seeing this here (Austria and Germany at least, though I assume it's common in other parts of Europe) alongside the idea that people in poorer (read: heavily exploited) countries live happier, simpler lives. I guess the implication there is that since they are happy nothing needs to fundamentally change. never really send the contraction of those ideas pointed out at all..of course they still see those supposedly happy people as beneath them and would never want to switch positions and I think they fundamentally misattribute the joy that are seeing because anything else would require them to question the myths they have been taught.

@prolrage I mean it's a lie but the people that want to believe it will, that's all it needs to do. give the faintest shadow of plausible deniability to the people that already have decided what side they are on. most western media won't report about them being exposed as liars again just as they haven't the last thousand times.
