RE: https://zirk.us/@impermanen_/116839087894914100 It’s not being introduced in Canberra, AFAIK—we have our own, separate, 100% renewable power grid—but we do get somewhere between 75% and 80% cheaper electricity during the middle of the day.

@impermanen_@zirk.us

Australia is introducing free daytime power in July. They’ve installed so much #solar that the challenge is to use it effectively. People who can shift their electricity usage to the day (think retirees or people that work from home) can save a lot even if they don’t have solar. Anyone with a battery or two installed could see their power bill for many months go to almost zero. Batteries are the key to having an economy that can run on solar and wind all the time. https://lenergy.com.au/free-daytime-electricity-is-coming-heres-how-it-actually-works/

They're talking about government-mandated #RentControl. The article doesn't mention it, because #jermalisms, but we have it in #Canberra. My #rent went up $5/week last year; were we still in #Brisbane, we'd be paying exactly twice what we were five years ago.

We don't have a #HousingAffordability problem in #Australia—we have a politician problem. There's simply no political will at state or federal levels to rein landlords in.

About 30 years ago, my sister and I found ourselves at a theme restaurant in #Anaheim where they served drinks in #cowboy #boot-shaped #mugs. They came back to Australia with us, and they’re probably still collecting dust on her bookcase.

Those mugs live on in my head, rent-free, BTW. My inner, frustrated anthropologist ruminates frequently on how #kitsch anchors the identities of people from differing socioeconomic backgrounds.

Coulda been a dissertation, I guess. 🤷🏻‍♂️ @icetsvu@mastodon.social

@phf@tabletop.social My early days in the hobby mostly focused on BECMI, only later really embracing AD&D1e, so it took me a while to fully appreciate just how cobbled together AD&D was from house rules and old Strategic Review/Dragon articles. The seams weren’t so obvious as in, say, Unearthed Arcana, but AD&D1e’s PHB and DMG—especially the latter—were glorious messes indeed. Gary’s whim seems to have been the chief criterion for including any given content.

@synlogic4242@social.vivaldi.net @cstross@wandering.shop I used to have a Google News Alert set up for keywords like “offbeat,” “strange,” and “bizarre.” It was great for snatching writing prompts from the headlines. When Trump announced his run for the 2016 presidential election, he rapidly sucked all the oxygen out of that particular room, his name attached to upwards of 90% of my alerts. Overnight, my world stopped being weird and wonderful, and became trite and nightmarish instead.

@mlazz I was at the Dawn Service at the AWM in Canberra today. Three speakers preceded the formal service by reciting dozens of stories of servicemen and -women wounded and killed in combat, and the formal service thereafter focused not on patriotism, nor glory, nor even God—it was nondenominational—but on the overwhelming need and desire for peace. I’ve been to many ANZAC Day services around the country, and this was the most sincere and reverent of them all.
