In today's news, turns out that I have been banned from the local pub for being a witch?

The landlord apparently hates what he called 'Glastonbury types' and rails against witches moving into the local area.

In fairness, we do have a practicing witch but she's a terf. Then there's someone else who has done 'goddess training' and talks about Pagan stuff a lot. We're on good terms with her and because we dress quite alt, we've been deemed witches #somerset

Reminds me of meeting someone on a dating app off the basis of a shared somewhat nerdy interest. We hooked up and gradually realised that we not only knew of each other online but actively hated one another. Too weird to last. We definitely softened towards each other after that, but their last words to me were literally 'neither of us should mention this to anyone... ever' 😆

I wrote up some thoughts on the Forge book, the social composition of gaming groups, the role of the GM, and changes in the hobby over the last 25 years #ttrpg

I read a post today about someone wanting to play an OSR game and then cooling on it quite rapidly because the GM presented them with a river to cross and they couldn't work out how to do it.

Players moaning about misty-stepping and athletics rolls.

Reminiscent of Chris Bissette writing an adventure for an MCDM magazine and editor reporting that it caused a series of TPKs because 5e players just walked into the river because there wasn't a 'pass river' skill.

Enjoying my second playthrough of Cyberpunk 2077 a lot more after I read a couple of articles.

The quickhack/magic system is somewhat OP but I imagine it must be what it feels like having a degree in marketing....

You just wander through life, broadcasting poisonous yet somehow infectious memeplexes at people and declaring yourself the winner while everyone showers you with money and opportunities.

@strangequark There was a very funny dinner in a Greenwich noodle place where we realised that we moved in similar online circles and spent the entire meal giving each other side-eye and trying to work out who the other one was to a deepening but shared sense of amused horror.

I know you can go all in on that stuff and have catch feelings about the kerning on particular typesets but when someone (like me) who doesn't care about such matters goes 'Yikes... really ugly font and why are your gutters so small?' than something has gone wrong.

There's something pleasingly old school about him knocking points off your grade for *checks site* not having paragraphs that are between 8 and 14 sentences long. "Yes I know that there is a style guide/rulebook but these are my house rules and I shall punish you for failing to abide by them"

@Printdevil I think for absolute beginners, the hard part to understand is never 'roll the big dice and look at the numbers to see if you succeed at doing a thing' But then I did once run a game for someone who wasn't familiar with fantasy and thought that he was wandering around a town with a bag full of rabits killing homeless people. https://tasker.land/2024/08/22/origins-a-carrier-bag-full-of-rabbits/ @RogerBW @satsuma

The one thing we can take from the efforts to repair Michael Jackson's reputation is that Epstein and Saville should have learned to tap dance.

@RogerBW @Printdevil I'm reminded of when I started drifting back towards the hobby, I decided to run Mines of Phandelver and I was *horrified* by how bad an introductory adventure it was. The first encounter has a load of Goblins attacking you, forcing you into mass-combat as your first encounter with the rules. If I were to write an introductory adventure for a broad audience, I would start with the fundamentals of engaging with a fictional world.

@fdouglaswall A while back, I played Thousand Year Vampire and that game tells you nothing about how to handle the logistics of play: How do you store memories, how much do you write, how do you organise things. Initially, I raged against it but then I realised it was part of the game. I think working out notes, mapping, book-keeping, logistics, and what hirelings are like part of playing RPGs. It's how a book written by someone else becomes your game.

@AndreasDavour @RogerBW It really does... I used to play a lot of historical games and we fell into a pattern of having to confront local thugs to get our foot in the local door, and then just hiring the local thugs as goons who could do the stuff that we didn't want to do. D&D teaches you to view hirelings as meatshields but if you treat them with a degree of realism they can become so much more and make your campaign immeasurably richer.

Whenever I see people talking about 'progressive patriotism' and reclaiming the St George's Cross I imagine a comparable German conversation in which someone moans about how unfair it is that only Nazis get to adorn their uniforms with the totenkopf.

Actually no... It is worse as there have been loads of military groups who have adopted skulls as symbols whereas only bellend racists care about the flag of St George.

@vdonnut Right... because a virtual environment is anchored. There are things that are objectively and unambiguously true and false about it. RPG fictions are often more fluid, ambiguous, and subject to collective interpretation. @Printdevil

@satsuma This wasn't about understanding the mechanics though... this was about understanding that it's a fictional world and it's okay to go 'Is there anything that we might be able to use to fashion a raft?' Understanding how to push dice is a skill that should come after the basic processes of engaging with a fictional world. @RogerBW @Printdevil

@Printdevil That is a big divide in Folk. The 'Tradition' in folk music backs quite neatly onto a lot of xenophobic politics. At the end of the day, some people see folk as a tradition that evolves and responds to lived experience and some people see folk as a way of saying that life was much better in the 1800s.
