#PhotoOfTheDay is an old snapshot I took of a colorful California king snake I encountered while hiking in the Santa Cruz mountains near Mt. Umunhum.
I've come across king snakes over the years while hiking, but the others have all been the brown-patterned variety. This was the only one I've encountered with the red coloring, and it really gets your attention on the trail!
The king snake is not venomous.

#PhotoOfTheDay is of a very large Ouroboros that I forged. I'd made several small ones and then I decided to attempt this much larger version (over a foot in diameter I think) which I then gave colors through spot heat treating of the steel. It hangs on a pillar in our backyard.

@arstechnica@mastodon.social Don't buy LG. And preferably not M$.
I have an LG tv and several LG monitors, but there won't be another.

@flyingsaceur@ioc.exchange @kilroy_was_here@dobbs.town @tsherrygeo@m.ai6yr.org My first HF rig was an Icon 718, another simple, compact 100W HF rig. I loved that one too and worked many countries with it despite a savagely-compromised rooftop antenna and being a total noob.
It was around the same price point, back in the day. IIRC they still sell it but the price has gone up some.

@tsherrygeo@m.ai6yr.org I think that's about what I paid for mine, prior to the price going up.
It's a good radio and it's not overcrowded with a million buttons and features which somehow makes it fun. :)

@ai6yr@m.ai6yr.org @W6KME@mastodon.radio @paul_ipv6@infosec.exchange The Amphenol/Times Microwave EZ no-solder coax connectors are freaking amazing... But expensive!
I use them exclusively now and have never regretted it. I also saved a ton of money by taking my time and buying the various tools when there were good deals, including several used tools in great condition. They're still expensive though, as are the connectors themselves.
You could save big $ by limiting to one size coax, but I can do LMR400/240/195.

@bud_t@m.ai6yr.org They are $$$. Milwaukee went "premium brand" at some point. Everyone else & their mother has similar solutions though.
DeWalt has one with internal bins which may or may not be helpful for you: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00CBY2E6G
For fine screwdrivers etc. I use a Craftsman "Versastack" part box that works well for me. (photo attached)
I like to to hit up the local hardware store(s) and look at them in person for a good idea of what would work best for me, size and style, what feels solid, etc..

@5ciFiGirl @Phangurl I get that way with things I have a happy emotional attachment to... Although I find that music alone can already be distracting to me, actual tv/movies/shows are way more so.
But feeling that you are among friends/companions/etc. can be very reassuring and crank up those good feels.

@0xabad1dea@infosec.exchange That's not uncommon. We see Bald Eagles pretty often when visiting the Oregon coast, but they are very scarce in Northern California where we live. You're more likely to see Golden Eagles here, although those are also uncommon and they seem to avoid built-up urban areas, so most people will probably never see one.

@hannah@posts.rat.pictures I've seen that before, although I don't know exactly what the process is. Probably related to that rat's nest of cables and the effort and downtime involved with cleaning it up.

@akkana@fosstodon.org That's a pretty neat solution. I can't be sure from the image, but it looks like it's only secured by a screw or something on one side? Maybe two-side tape on the other? Anyway, it makes me wonder about the practical use of it, like at what point do you need to act...

@bobkmertz@techhub.social @hannah@posts.rat.pictures Exactly. It's all complicated by multiple companies/organizations being responsible for their cables, the pole and pole attachments, etc. And the rat's nest was surely created by multiple people with different requirements, to phrase it charitably. :)

@bud_t@m.ai6yr.org I use small tool bags for wiring, working on cables, etc. That way they can be portable.
But most of my radio activities are done at home, so most of the extra stuff is stored on cabinet shelves in my garage.
I do use some small cases similar to the Packout ones for fine tools, for example. But many tools are stored in tool chests or at my workbench.
Cases like the Packout or similar organizer boxes are very convenient for parts etc. I like clear lids, and label if needed.

@akkana@fosstodon.org It's interesting to think about in any case. Like perhaps it's measuring the gap throughout the day (or season) as the sun hits it..
All conjecture, but I'm glad they're doing some real observational science out there. It's a welcome change of pace from the idiocy of the current regime in charge that's filling my feed today!
