"I wish Affinity worked on Linux"

Surprise! You can install the latest version of Affinity on Linux in just 15 minutes:
https://github.com/ryzendew/Linux-Affinity-Installer

And although that is a community-run project, Canva are considering officially supporting Affinity on Linux:

This 5 minute drama/comedy film tells the story of Christina, a woman with long covid, who meets a medieval ghost. It's a thoughtful and empathetic watch, and is currently vying for 1st place in a short film festival!

If you'd like to see a society that's kinder to people with long covid, give it a watch / like / comment and help it win!

@jfml@mastodon.art yeah it’s pretty amazing to hear! If Canva’s goal is to out-compete Adobe then supporting Linux might be a big deal for them. I believe Affinity relies on some DLLs that come with Windows and which they wouldn’t have the right to distribute. So I’m not sure how easy it would be for them to change that.

@Daojoan@mastodon.social really insightful thread, thank you for sharing this. I found the book “How to Do Nothing” by Jenny Odell a fantastic read on why our individual and collective attention is valuable. Would definitely recommend it to anyone interested.

@debby@hear-me.social @matthewbischoff@mastodon.social @fernandolins@mastodon.cloud thank you very much for the mention! I haven’t put all of my app-related work on my portfolio but it’s definitely something I love doing. Although I’m currently employed full-time, there are lots of very talented freelance app designers over on Contra if you’re looking for someone for a project: https://contra.com/ Or I can boost a post with more info

@jannuary@tech.lgbt honestly the minimalist view makes it all worth it. That and the window management. Hitting “super” and getting whatever I need opened / found / moved is just beautiful.

@eliasp@mastodon.social @penpot@fosstodon.org yes! It’s come a long way in the past year. But as I’m such a power user of Figma and was always trying to work as quickly as possible being self-employed, switching to a less mature tool would have cost me time every day so it didn’t make sense. Am excited to use it again in the future though.

@puravariedad@social.anartist.org I hope the alternatives flourish and that more designers are able to become less reliant on Adobe over time. For a career path that often isn’t well paid, it seems unfair that such software is so expensive.

@devolute@mastodon.social I hear there’s a new email client in the works which follows the same UI as I showed in the article’s screenshots (the GNOME desktop environment, if that means anything to you). Keep an eye out! I’m personally very happy with Thunderbird. They released a new version which shows threads in a nice card layout. It might interest you

@alisynthesis@io.waxandleather.com good luck! I found it a lot easier today than it was 3 years ago. I did the “GUI Installer” method and I found it easy to follow. There was also a button in the installer to change the app’s scaling (dpi) in case you have a high-res screen and everything looks too small at first.

@otter_linnus@det.social thank you. Any time I read something to do with Linux it almost always goes down the rabbit hole of desktop environments, display managers, etc etc etc. Some people love knowing how their computer works (including me!). Most people couldn’t care less. I wanted to write a piece that focused on the essential things a designer would need to know in order to start using Linux and nothing more, and I’m glad that came across.
