SIGNET CITY - Reveal Trailer
I've migrated my #digiKam database from SQLite to a local MariaDB today and the difference is night and day 😍 According to the manual, SQLite with WAL on a SSD is perfectly fine for 100K images and more - anecdotally, it handled up to 300K just fine.
But 400K images were pushing it. digiKam became sluggish and unresponsive when opening large folders from NAS. Now it doesn't break a sweat. There is a build-in migration tool, the whole process took maybe 15min. Shoutout to the digiKam team, awesome work 💪

Just in case you're wondering how I ended up with 400K images...
A 15% discount and a free magnetic case was all it took for me to succumb to peer pressure 😄
Interesting read about why we keep so much stuff. Guilty as charged:
"Jordan identifies three common patterns: the “aspirational self” keeps gym equipment and untouched language course textbooks, proof of who we intend to become; the “sunk-cost self” holds on because too much money was spent; and the “nostalgic self” holds on to what Jordan calls “spirit tokens”, objects kept as proof of a former self. Men and CD collections are her go-to example. The Radiohead album isn’t really about music; it is about the person who knew about Radiohead before everyone else.
Underneath the spirit token is the fear of losing a self you once recognised. That is not trivial. But awareness of it creates a choice: do you want to keep living in a museum of who you were, or make room for who you are?"

Paul Tassi is sad and angry - like most Guardians today: "Destiny could have ended with a Final Shape bang and regrouped to bring us the sequel it deserved. Instead, it has slowly melted into nothingness, and at best, will exist as a mere shadow of itself. It deserved better than this. So did its developers. So did its players."

Interesting: They don't use white gloves to flip through the pages because apparently the gloves are more likely to damage the paper.

@fringemagnet@sunny.garden Yeah, that unnecessary gendering tripped me up too and there are plenty of old USB cables and ancient A/C adapters I should probably start with. The way I understand it, he isn't suggesting to get rid of all CDs - just the things that are no longer part of your "now".
I tend to keep too many things purely for sentimental reasons / nostalgia and getting rid of these things takes a lot of effort and is exhausting, so the idea of "narrating an object before releasing it: to say what it meant, who it came from and what chapter of life it represents" kinda resonates with me.
Like "I've bought my first digital camera after school after saving up and working a summer job, it served me well, but it's now a relic of the 90's that longer has any practical use and it's taking up a shoe box sized space."
And looking back at some of the music I've bought in the 90's - some albums were definitely a bit pretentious I will probably never listen to them again. I'm still listening to Radiohead and Thom Yorke's new stuff though 😄
