@401matthall@mastodon.xyz @mhoye@cosocial.ca Well I work at a company which does VoIP and might put in those screens in the future. (that's a different team)
We certainly don't want to skimp on bandwidth.
However visibility of voice problems is terrible, typically. There are some companies who will charge you _lots_ of money for some bad software that condenses quality into a few meaningless numbers, so such screens can provide at least _some_ visibility into the problem.

@jaseg@chaos.social That's actually not to strange of an idea. Some types of tunable lasers are also tuned via temperature.
Also many years ago there was some paper about determining the location of a computer based on the drift of their clock. Essentially the idea was that room temperature changes with the sun and therefore you can find out of it's day or night. Based on that you can find out the location.

@ilyamikcoder Actually I think it's correct, it's just in the "second person plural" form which is also used for formal speech. So it tells the person to wait... but in a rather formal form you'd expect in movies set in a medieval world.

@KathyReid@aus.social Well I think that still exists, it's just not as visible as before.
However there are some things that feel harder than before. Web standards are one example. We seem to have lost the idea of separating content from design, so browsers no longer just render HTML nicely by default. There also no longer seem to be simple HTML editors around.
One point is of course the IPv4 exhaustion which means that it's harder to host your own webserver at home.

#powergrid Here's a plot of the spectrogram of the current frequency of the power grid. I plan to design a little device which allows people to record the phase (and therefore frequency) of the power grid at decent fidelity for probably <100 Euros per piece as a kit.

@foone@digipres.club @ada@mastodon.catgirl.cloud Is it connected via the parallel or serial port? Typically those printers try to squeeze out every millisecond they can from the process, sometimes having buffers of multiple kilobytes to keep the data flowing.

@gloriouscow@oldbytes.space Well in both PAL and NTSC the color burst does not only signal if the line is in color, but the more important aspect is that it provides a phase reference for the chroma subcarrier.

@s0@cathode.church I mean seriously, that's good design. It's not perfect, but they didn't unnecessarily remove a feature that's easy to do and without downsides.... then again that device seems to need a dongle even for essential features like Ethernet.
