I read a lot of science fiction and fantasy books. I've been making two different efforts the last few years that are almost opposites in effect, to read more diverse voices in the modern books I pick up as well as to take more looks at some of the older foundational books of the genres I read. Both have led to some really good books.
I'm also a dad with a kid who's hitting just the right age to start introducing some of my old favorites.
One of my favorite things to go see is waterfalls. There's a cool one in the park the next town over, next to an old mill that is actually operational (for demos, not commercially)
Took a walk around the downtown near my office on Tuesday during my lunch break. Got some really cool photos. #Photography
So apparently when I use Darktable to edit photos with clipped highlights, like say the bright sky above a bridge, they turn pink.
Just got back Friday evening from a family vacation to a town on the shores of Lake Michigan. So many cool things that I got pictures of. Still waiting on the film I shot to go through the lab.
Took my kid to Free RPG Day yesterday and Forever DM Dad grinned when she grabbed "No Place Like Homebrew" and declared that she needs a notebook for building her own world, complete with colored pens for categorizing.
Now just trying to find more kid friendly Game Master materials to help her along.
Been looking through @TTRPGkids@dice.camp for storyteller stuff food for kids?
Anyone got recommendations?
Been reading the first book of The Witcher and it has me wanting to run a classic "village has monster problem" scenario in a TTRPG.
Got my film scans back. My sunset picture turned out awesome! One problem, I did not compose well for cropping to an 8x10 so I have to figure out ordering and framing an 8x12 print.
Took this shot really just to re-dial in familiarity with my 35mm Canon Rebel SLR with a long forgotten roll of Kodak 400 that was in it.
Love how the shadow and color plays in it
A few years ago, when my daughter was in preschool, the class had a card stock "feather" sent home with a homework task of "cover it in texture."
She chose googly eyes. So I've held on to what I call the "biblically-accurate angel feather." It has a place of pride on my desk alongside my RPG books.
Finished Maria Dahvana Headley's translation of Beowulf tonight. It scratches an itch for me in being a translation that tries to understand what the text tried to be to its original audience and to translate that to the new audience. Here, we have the boasting translated into a frat-boy-esque narration that totally works.
(My favorite translation of Eugene Onegin is the Hofstadter one with little translation puns thrown in here and there.)
Tonight, I came across pictures from when I was Duke Orsino in Twelfth Night. That was such a fun play, need to get around to Shakespeare again.
Good night at the softball fields for Opening Night! My daughter's team won their first game!
@JessTheUnstill@infosec.exchange I'm torn between the Jurassic Park velocitaptor of Deinonychus and actual velociraptors.
@TTRPGkids@dice.camp She reads okay independently, but is still in the out-loud reading phase
