@30p87@chaos.social @ret@furry.engineer @anselmschueler@ieji.de @davidgerard@circumstances.run responsible admins leave those fields blank on public-facing systems, or fill them with nonsense. also, there is no law requiring those fields be filled with accurate info or anything at all. the laws being proposed for "age verification" surveillance are designed to take agency away from the user and make it nearly impossible to use the internet without an age field being built into every OS and somehow have that field be verifiable, which will mean you'll need government ID proving age of majority just to boot your own computer. shady fake ID makers will have pockets full of cash if that happens. if every OS is required to have an age field, it's not a stretch to believe the lawmakers will come for the rest of the user info next. do you want your personal info leaking all over the internet, in plaintext no less, by law? i know i don't. i think i can safely assume that someone who has a trans flag in their profile pic would also not want that.

@ret@furry.engineer @30p87@chaos.social @anselmschueler@ieji.de @davidgerard@circumstances.run it's important to note that nobody runs fingerd anymore, because its entire purpose is putting private info in a very public space. there was a time when this was not the worst idea ever, if you used your .finger profile carefully, but those times are long over. fingerd became a big security problem and the best solution was to never run that service again, for the same reason very few people run plaintext httpd or telnetd anymore, and ftpd is only ever used for anonymous file transfer. we also don't get a phone book from the phone company anymore. it was always a bit of a privacy problem, but now it would be a massive privacy problem. everyone hates getting scam calls, so imagine just how much worse that problem would be if a public phone book were still mailed to everyone with a phone. "some people do a thing that's a bad idea so why not make the bad idea the default" has never been a good idea.

i'm looking for an Android app or website that uses OpenStreetMap and will not only give me a bike route with elevation, but tell me where the peaks and valleys are, and has an option for routing with the flattest land. does such a thing exist? i swear i saw something like that at some point but now i can't find it. #OpenStreetMap #OttBike #Cycling

"evil corporation made me verify my age so let them do it with as little friction as possible" is an extremely irresponsible position to take. why not invite the police to live in your bedroom then? do you need a cop to tell you when it's okay to piss so you won't be marked forever as a sexual predator? i'm not talking about only the California and Ohio laws. i think taking the FOSS requirement out of those specific laws renders them completely pointless. why do it at all then? why do Windows and MacOS users not need any agency but linux users can have theirs? it was never a good idea to put age verification in any OS. but i don't live in Calfornia, nor Ohio, nor anywhere in USA. i live in Canada, where our current prime sinister is all too happy to bow down to fascist nonsense. Mark Carney is doing a lot of the things Stephen Harper was stopped from doing and, in many cases, worse things still. we already have barely any time to stop a piece of federal legislation that which, if or when it becomes law, will be an enormous violation of everyone's privacy in a way that will make the Chinese and North Korean governments blush, and that's before we even get to the age verification law that will be coming through the legislative pipeline. this is a law that will require all encrypted communication be given back door access, along with a different law that will allow the cops to open our mail if they feel like it, without even a warrant. it's not even just Canada or USA. the UK government wants it, the Indian government wants it, there are several openly fascist governments that want age verification built into every OS. that is another privacy nightmare along with a massive loss of agency.

@jonny@neuromatch.social idk the rest of the highway law in California, but the cut-off line for what requires a license and what doesn't in Ontario is the speed of the vehicle. if it can move faster than 45km/h then it requires a license. there are other factors, such as whether a vehicle is street legal at all, depending on certain physical features of the vehicle. my ebike's top speed is 32km/h. i don't mind it. i just wish i could hit the throttle and go 90km, instead of that being how far i might be able to go at power assist level 1, pedaling the whole way. it's like how they advertise cell phones: the battery will last for days if you only use it as a phone. if you do more, like txting or using apps, the hours your battery will last shorten considerably. it's getting better with 20,000mAh+ batteries but that is so much energy to put in a thing that goes in your pocket.

@rupert@mastodon.nz @jonny@neuromatch.social 73km/h is an illegal ebike speed in Ontario, without a license. my ebike's car top speed is 32km/h, period. i've found no way to make it any faster, and i've been told that even if i did, it could cause damage to the battery by putting more load on it than it was designed for. and i do not need a battery fire in my house. the rear hub is a 500W motor. in Ontario, 42km/h is just under the license requirement. it has been that way for decades, long before ebikes ever existed, perhaps as long as the age of the Ontario Highway Traffic Act, which sets that limit. most ebikes sold here are set at 32km/h which tbh is just fine. most residential streets in Ottawa have a speed limit of 30km/h now, so the car traffic isn't moving faster than my ebike most of the time, unless i accidentally get on the airport parkway. that happened once and it was a bit scary.
