@kboyd@phpc.social ahh child themes are interesting. It's somewhat of a relic before page builder themes where a thing. But they make a ton of sense when you have a traditional theme with normal templates and not a page builders. Being able to update the parent theme and not wipe out the customizations is great.

@ai6yr was thinking about this a little bit. A little worried he might drop a nuke after the 48 hours to try and get them to surrender. I don't think it will be on a city or anything, but likely as a threat. I hope that isn't the case.

@mlanger@mastodon.world @gglockner@social.seattle.wa.us I will say this though, companies have been sitting on mountains and mountains of data for years, and now they are trying to cash in. But the data centers we should be worried about are the government (and companies with government contracts). They are building them with the express purpose of tracking everything you do, go and say. That is the real danger here, and why there is a huge push for age verification. That will then lead to banning any and all anonymous online activity.

@carlrichell@fosstodon.org I think this is a start at least. The issue is what counts as open source? The real fix is to make parents be parents. They need to be held responsible for what their children do. It's crazy that it's not part of the conversation at all. We would charge parents with negligence and neglect if they were to leave their kids alone in a bad neighborhood. That is essentially what happens when you give them an Internet enabled device. We are making corporations arbiters of behavior and actions instead of individuals.

@mra@mathstodon.xyz @leftpaddotpy@hachyderm.io also filters. It would be neat to have some temporary or post level controls on a few things. Like the ability limit post/reply reach. Sometimes a post will be boosted and then you have a ton of people engaging. Would be nice to lock or disable either temporarily or permanently in that instance. But I have a feeling people try to apply the mental modal of other social networks to mastodon. For me I don't care about having a large following or audience. If people follow me then great! But it really isn't a mass communication tool like Twitter was.

@mlanger@mastodon.world @gglockner@social.seattle.wa.us yeah that runs a few checks in JavaScript to try and make sure you are a person, but it wouldn't surprise me if it can be bypassed easily these days for someone who wants to. A lot of times they are checking if they have seen you before and detect mouse movements or other human interactions. They also check network requests to see if you are just downloading the HTML and skipping over things like images and scripts. If something looks off they will usually do a captcha challenge instead of outright blocking. The 'not a robot' check box from Google recaptcha has been doing the same thing for years.

@mlanger@mastodon.world @gglockner@social.seattle.wa.us that is just what they want you to think. I am right in the middle of the data center hotspots and they have owned the land and water rights for years. There is a ton of misinformation going on right now, but they take lots of planning and study to build one.

@mlanger@mastodon.world @gglockner@social.seattle.wa.us yes and no. The issue is it also slows down legitimate traffic, and you can take an SEO hit for having a slow site. Those bot checks prevent legitimate traffic from the effects and saves on resources.

@mlanger@mastodon.world @gglockner@social.seattle.wa.us part of it is also to just slow down things for a little bit. Scrappers become expensive if you start slowing down requests at large scales.

@mlanger@mastodon.world @gglockner@social.seattle.wa.us so the data center thing is interesting. It takes a while to plan and build them. I know in my area the ones currently going up have been in the works for like 10 years. Most of them aren't going to be running or doing much with a.i.

@mlanger@mastodon.world @gglockner@social.seattle.wa.us it isn't illegal for them to do it. The only thing you can do is block known scrappers and then put annoying JavaScript challenges in front of sites. (That is why you are seeing more of them)

@syntaxseed@phpc.social because tech companies lie. 10% churn is pretty standard for those large companies on a yearly basis. But the main thing is they over hired and now have to correct. If A.I. was as great as they say it is then it would be far higher than 10% and they wouldn't be selling it to everyone and anyone.

@nina_kali_nina@tech.lgbt it's clear that the government is building a massive database of citizens and everything they say and do online. They are doing this using private companies to get around any direct legal challenges.
