@iamnotU@mastodon.social @dbattistella@todon.eu I think it’s what curiosity looks like. Genius might be that, or something else, but it’s a daunting word! … and it’s funny how society values genius and pushes or literally beats children to have it, while it laughs at curiosity and seems to try to erase it from children.

@pluralistic the first time I came across Dawkins I thought he was a prick. I think it’s because, fairly regardless of the quality of his argument, he decided to be an arse about it, as well as arrogant. Another 2 decades have definitely not changed my mind.

TIL car tyre sizes (eg, 225/55R17) manage to combine metric (225mm width), a percentage for an aspect ratio (55%), and imperial (17 inch diameter). I think that’s just marvellous. Well done everyone.

@inthehands@hachyderm.io I don't think many teachers in the UK think this, but I get the impression (since Gove) it's effectively the state, industry's, and worst – students take, with examinations there to check enough has been sponged up. Setting the stage well for the entrance of AI.

@susankayequinn oh, that’s lovely. I have a theory, and it is that the “formal” economy will often displace an informal economy like this. But only the formal economy is measured. So, when we see GDP grow, the ledger only accounts the part that goes up. The part that is destroyed is ignored. And might well be of much greater value.

I watched Project Hail Mary with two of my kids last night (16 and 10). It was great, and I think really worth a watch, even if you would often not go for sci fi.

What I particularly liked about it, at this current time, were its overall level of optimism.

It has confidence in the goodness of humans (and non humans!), and our ability to resolve existential problems together and care for each other.

It was pretty diverse and didn’t begin from an assumption of “America saves the world”; The eponymous project seems to be a an international effort and not even US lead.

The characters are not, on the whole, regular “heroes”. They’re flawed, and troubled, but they can still get good done, which i also find to be a very helpful message.

It was also fun, entertaining, not overly perilous, and didn’t take itself too seriously while telling a solid story.

The plot holes were mostly easy to ignore. I’d be happy to read the book and see if it fills them.

So, I recommend it, and if you watch it, I hope you enjoy it too.

@bleeptrack@vis.social I definitely feel the industry as a whole (with numerous exceptions in its individuals who often have tried to increase accessibility) has brought this on itself. It’s a shame that those that encouraged things to be this way and benefitted from the barriers to entry and exceptionalism seem likely to continue to benefit with AI.

@mattblaze@federate.social :-) I’ll look up the papers, thanks! … I wonder if a perspective here is that the entire idea of “privileged knowledge” is, basically, tremendously morally dubious. You note several problematic outcomes of it. I think there is a distinction to “secrets”. We understand a secret is only secret when it is kept secret. We don’t expect others to respect the secrecy, that duty is on us. With privileged knowledge there is some sense of requiring others to align with our own ideas. … I just can’t see that leading to healthy incentives, and it seems pretty guaranteed to create unfortunate power imbalances? Maybe someone’s already written about this clearly, because I don’t think I’m managing to!

At a local youth bands gig. Some great stuff. Most playing their own work - the only cover so far not as good as the kids’ own original works. Great how they’re making music that’s fresh and relevant to their life or ideas.

@ax11@mastodon.social @mattblaze@federate.social I agree with this, but I’m suggesting maybe we can make a stronger statement, beyond just the realm of security, that “privileged information” is problematic. Thinking of historic examples, we’ve got the power of the church amplified by the bible being in Latin, and also being very expensive to copy. I think there are lots of examples of knowledge hoarding in libraries, prior to this being more open. There are also lots of cases of manufacturing knowledge being kept private to block competition. In these cases, it’s been rational for some group to maintain privileged information, but it seems hard to claim this has benefitted people at large.

It’s a weird thing, being made to obey a law.

Is that unusual? Usually we actively choose whether to obey laws, and so shitty ones are visibly ignored. Good ones are not. That has its own problems, but problems that are perhaps understood.

I broke the law this weekend. I slept on the beach with my children, under the stars. I think a law prohibiting that is a load of arse, so I chose to break it.

I choose to drive within the speed limit. I’d actually welcome being forced to, personally. Interesting.

Being made to obey a law by my phone seems rather different. I don’t like it.

This is regarding iOS now requiring me to verify my age in the UK to access age controlled content and web sites. I can trivially do this with the cards I have in my wallet, but i do not wish to do it. I’m very far from being persuaded this is a good thing I should comply with.

@dr_a probably the same for me. And I think you can just look at so many problems and know exactly how to handle them, once you’ve got it. It should probably be a scouting badge. And we should probably teach it to kids like we hopefully teach them how to avoid their country getting taken over by war mongers and fascists. I’ve only got vectors, and roughly know what an Eigen does. So mine is weak sauce.

@slowe one thing I get from it is that, if we could only get people to meet each other on the level, they might be so much better at resolving differences and often finding common ground. Representation has arguments for it, but I feel we loose a lot by that (if it happens) mediation. I feel like this might be why citizens assemblies can work well — perhaps people can actually empathise, feel, expand their views and change their ideas.

Would be absolutely superb is #Apple #Safari browser (but any browser, really), indicated per tab energy impact in a visible way.

I know from Activity Monitor that, say, safari media has high impact, or sometimes even a given domain is named, I think — but mapping that to a tab in some window is really tiresome.

The visibility would be an instant flag to call out sites that kill battery life.

@ax11@mastodon.social @mattblaze@federate.social a follow on thought - the intent (often subverted) of patent law was to encourage information disclosure instead of hoarding. The “payment” for disclosure being exclusivity for some period. So even our regulatory system considers privileged process information to be problematic.

@tryst@fedi.imu.li I think this sort of thing is really powerful. I’d probably work on the UI instead, but there is so much research in to great UI and editing approaches. I wondered “why don’t we see this in the wild?”, and concluded that a big part of this is that to use any of it, you are locked in to that niche tool, which is ultimately very limiting. These tools need a shared underlying collaborative data mechanism to flourish, imho. (I think this is why plain text is so loved. It is currently the best collaborative data mechanism for interoperable tools - but it’s not good enough)

@tryst@fedi.imu.li on the BTree typing, yes.

It’s fairly general and is not key value specific. It is generic on the leaf, which mostly just needs to be a Monoid of some kind.

A leaf could be an array, or a list of kv pairs. Or fairly specific things as needed, so, perhaps fragments of an attributed text document.

The BTree has a generic join function (That I got passing tests last night since working from start of the summer!) that can be told how the underlying leaves should be joined. It’s hopefully efficient and minimises work where trees are similar.

So, the tree doesn’t inherently know how to join data, the content leaves need to know this.

Eg, I anticipate a generic leaf for a CRDT list, which I’m hoping to work on roughly next.

@tryst@fedi.imu.li I want all of this (underlying system and UI) to be broadly general, although parts of it could be independently taken and used in other tools. I don't think stand alone applications are at all a good idea, so I want it mostly to be an extensible environment to which new visualisation, data and editing support can be brought incrementally. I think a fairly good initial choice of application design would be something somewhat like a message / chat app + notes. This is a familiar metaphor that provides a reasonable setting for the collaborative element and would let users discover the possibilities here with both their own notes and project, shared parts of those, and fully collaborative group owned documents. Some initial built in types I want to support are structured text, relational entities, and spreadsheet like cells. … it's quite a big project!

@mcc@mastodon.social I had this half formed thought about what pisses me off about AI yesterday, which your point frames better. I just don’t want computers to work like this. I don’t want weird black boxes, that are almost certainly highly unreliable, that are plumbed together on the fly by some “agent”. I hate that, and I think it’s shit. I believe computers can be highly reliable, robust, transparent, and understandable. I desperately want them to be like that, especially as an extension of myself. The AI approach seems to be entirely conceding that aim and embrace “it doesn’t matter how it works if it usually gets the job done”. I don’t want that.

@nasser i’d not made that connection. Seems right. I think the reason we overload display names as symbol identifiers in programming languages is because (in almost all cases) we expect our code to exist in plain text files we directly edit with very little additional tooling. As such, we don’t have a lot of choice. But it doesn’t have to be like that, and I (for one) predict the advantages of richer representations for code will eventually be too strong to ignore.

@melondruie@sunny.garden :-) FWIW, I’m a bit like that in the first sense… I quite often find art interesting to look at, and I can have ideas about what might be implied, and that’s often enough… but I can frequently sense that the artist wants to say something, perhaps fairly specific, and I often have no idea what that is. Or there is some important context I’m woefully ignorant of. It’s kind of frustrating. Like not getting a punch line or a riddle. So - I’ve come to appreciate the little title card things, kind of like a hint in a computer game I suppose. I also think there is a possibility that this idea of actually understanding someone else’s message in an unambiguous way might be a kind of modern idea? That’s separate from art though :-)
