So, the village I'm volunteering with at Defcon 34 doesn't have enough badges to go around, and unless that changes (unlikely) or a couple other people miss out (also unlikely) I am not going to make the cut, so it's time for 💕 emergency crowdfunding! I have until Monday August 03 to meet this goal or cancel my flight to Las Vegas. Apart from the fact that it would just be really unpleasant to have to cancel this trip for a second year in a row, and that I would rather like the chance to get to know folks in the field I've been trying to get into for years now, I have made a commitment to the Ham Radio Village and I do not want to have to break it. Honestly I think that attitude is a direct result of the fact that paid software exists; the flip side of @itsVague@anarres.family's argument about app stores devaluing of software (valid point btw) is that when software is seen as a commercialized commodity, there is always going to be a perceived value to using it that wouldn't exist if it were understood that everyone has free access to it and the developer's income isn't tied to the consumption of that commodity. So there is a nonzero chance that my partner and I will be driving up to Idaho to collect my sister in law. We are finally back on food assistance and have a stable grocery situation again, and for the moment selling my blood plasma only has to cover bills and the occasional non-food groceries. However, I'm going to Defcon at the start of next month, and while I've been able cover my flight and badge in various ways, I'm gonna have to eat that week and I'm probably going to leave our SNAP card at home for my wife and kid to use that week. @julia It's meant to be an onomatopoeia of the stereotype of the way someone with a mental disability talks. There is no more or less to it, it's another way to say "retarded" (or "spastic" for the brits) that somehow is not considered offensive.

@frawst It's just frustrating. The second the word appeared in a MLP:FiM episode, the reaction was immediate. People knew what it meant and were not shy about telling the showrunners. That was eleven years ago. And over the past decade, it's just been normalized. Every time I talk about this, it's a shock to literally everyone. (Which is why I don't leap for the pitchfork, beyond making its meaning clear.)
