Miyazaki films are, in my opinion, the best anti-war films because they — much like the videogame Papers, Please — focus on the other aspects of war that isn’t the actual war itself, thereby giving you the horrors of war without needing to glamorise it

Most western-made¹ anti-war films end up being unintentionally pro-war because in order to show their heroes and protagonists acting heroic in the face of their adversity, they show warfare in a way that is a spectacle. Films like 1917, Saving Private Ryan and even Full Metal Jacket fall into this.

But since Miyazaki films, such as his adaptation of Howl’s Moving Castle, do not focus directly on the war itself, they focus on the individuals and groups they affect, they are better able to show the horrors of war. From the soldiers turning to sludge monsters, to showcasing the horrible aftermath on landscapes, and the political machinations of those who seek to perpetuate state violence

Was Harry Potter a huge part of my childhood? Well, when the seventh book came out, I read it on the day, in one go.

So yes, it was a huge part of my childhood. But my childhood is wayyy over. The seventh book came out in 2007! The last film was released in 2011, when I was in my late teens.

Harry Potter was in my childhood. My childhood is in the past. The past is not the present. To me, I grew out of it after I watched the last film. There’s nothing more to the series than that. I grew out of it in the same way that I grew out of wearing baggy jeans and chequered jackets.

It can be difficult to separate art from the artist, when the art was a pivotal part of your childhood. Incredibly so. However, in her own words, she said she would use any royalties she gets from her works to fund anti-transgender groups. By participating in enjoying it as an adult, you are placing your own memories of childhood above the harm she does to the childhood of those in the present.

These children deserve better than that. No amount of any nostalgia is worth enabling that.

Disney writing be like: I am a villain who wished to change the status quo for the better. I believe the powerful should be humbled, that the masses should have freedom, and the rich should be stripped of their wealth. Now I am going to blow up this hospital filled with puppies to ensure you link social justice with evilness.
