Games That I Missed

Challenged to live-toot games that I, apparently, should have played decades ago? I dabble in #retrogaming, #retrocomputing, #pinball, #3DPrinting, and other stuff as well.

If you're any kind of decent person, I'm happy to be here with you. Your biology and choices don't bother me. I'm on the side that welcomes foreigners, LGBTQ+ people, neurodiverse folks, and everyone else who wants to read my thoughts about computers and games and fun.

No Nazis. Ever. Under any circumstances.

Ahead of the storm, I just found this monster puffball mushroom trying to break through the cover of English ivy that perpetually threatens to invade from the north (my neighbors' yard). This thing is 901 grams, and larger than my entire head. I didn't know puffballs could get this large. Considering puffball steaks for dinner. #Mushtodon #FungiFriday #Food

But, I can only be so violent. I want to cut away at the plastic shell, but not possibly damage anything else inside. This calls for paper. If you cut a 2.5 cm circle out of ordinary paper, put that on the business end of a Dremel or similar high-speed rotary tool, then you can use it as a cutting disc for plastic. It goes through thin plastic (soda bottles and the like) as if it wasn't even there. But it won't go through steel or glass, because the paper isn't hard enough.

I had an excellent #Swapfest: I sold *eight* 486 Compaq laptops, watched dozens of people enjoy Super Mario Bros., and made one person very happy by selling them a 24" Toshiba CRT television. I met the people who refurbished and were selling all the Sony Mavica floppy disk cameras last year! They're super nice and bought a weird camera from me. #Boston #CambridgeMA

The 4 Y-screws on the back of Melty Switch came out fine, and then the first JIS screw on the top, and then there are two JIS screws on the bottom, flanking the charging port ... Huh. Going back to that first picture of Melty Switch, you may all realize along with me that the plastic has warped so badly that there's no longer any way to access those screws. (Also, this closeup is giving me Cronenberg vibes, and now it's creepy.) My solution is violence.

@NanoRaptor@bitbang.social Decades ago, I posted my calculations for the caloric density of Tokyo. There was a friendly argument going on about why Godzilla always heads for Tokyo, and I argued -- with math -- that it's because major cities are where the calories are. Still proud of that one to this day, even if it's lost to time.

@outofprintarchive@retro.pizza "If you're willing to throw maturity out the window ..." What an awful way to think and live. I'm a middle-aged straight man, and I've been a hell of a lot happier in my life because I'm not concerned over whether Rocket Slime was mature or manly enough for me to play it. The entire "bright and colorful games are immature" cohort has done immense damage to the gaming hobby for decades, and needs to either get therapy or walk into the sea. (Rocket Slime is a great game.)

@joel@fosstodon.org You've got me starting a run of it on the Wii U now. It weirds me out that they mirror-flipped this version to make Link left-handed again. I played the game on the Wii originally, and I keep getting confused and turning in the wrong direction to get to places I remember.

I'm taking 20 minutes in a hammock in the back garden while the clothes dryer finishes. I can smell flowers on the breeze as I read the new Murderbot novel. This is better.

@joel@fosstodon.org "I am realizing that pretty much every difficult section of the game so far is actually telegraphed and accounted for if you know how to read and take a hint whenever the game gives it to you!" My younger kid is having a similar experience with Breath of the Wild right now. It's obvious to me that the player should talk to NPCs, and read signs, but my kid barrels right along as fast as possible, and inevitably gets stuck. It's a good lesson for me, that "intuitive" isn't always so.

If anyone else there is using KOReader on a jailbroken Kindle, there's a relatively new plugin for borrowing ebooks from your library via Libby/OverDrive:

https://github.com/kaikozlov/acsm.koplugin

At first it did not want to do anything at all on my device; it didn't even show up as a an option under "Open With ..." in the file browser. But, I realized that my installation of KOReader was a little out of date. Updating KOReader to the current version made the plugin function correctly.

Walking my kid to school this morning, and this mining bee (that's what iNaturalist tells me) was crawling slowly down the middle of the sidewalk. I let it crawl onto my finger and then transferred it up to a flower. Didn't want it to get stepped on.

@younata@hachyderm.io I think that Nintendo is the only company to handle the limitations of resistive touchscreens well (in the DS/3DS/Wii U), by designing menus and games that recognize those limitations. Pretty much any time I've used a resistive touchscreen from smother manufacturer, it's been frustrating. I've never been able to spend more than few minutes with a Palm device, though. I gather they also did well?

@TechTangents@dialup.space That Voodoo3 card made such a huge difference because it was PCI. There were a ton of low-end computers being sold back at the end of the '90s with integrated video (I had friends with the horrifically bad Intel i740 on the motherboard), and no AGP slot. A PCI card that you could pop into a Celeron 333 to play Quake 3 with an acceptable frame rate was nearly miraculous.

Replying to
@Hundstrasse@retro.pizza With the New 3DS, an infrared LED is set into the top bezel next to the camera. It shines on your face if you have 3D switched on, and the camera tracks the infrared reflections from your eyes. The system uses that to determine your eyes' positions, and can make adjustments to the screen to compensate for head movement. It updates very quickly, so you can tilt your head or the 3DS and it won't interrupt the 3D effect at all.

@tschak@oldbytes.space This is some sort of affront to technology, and I and my Atari Lynx are here for it. It was a portable console that supported 8-player multiplayer! If a game console from that era is going to emerge from the primordial ooze and play over the Internet, the Lynx is a good choice.

@BigBadBiologist The USB cable in my car keeps ending up one with the phone-end on the floor of the passenger footwell (due most often to certain children who will remain unnamed). I was cleaning up the garage and I looked at the eye-screw in my hand, thought of the hot glue gun in the office, and decided, "I can solve this. I can perform cable management in the most amateurish way possible."

@scribblemacher@mstdn.games Creepy Black is exactly that, a physical bootleg of the ROM hack. It was for sale at a flea market last year, I picked it up for the novelty. I haven't actually done much more with NFL Blitz than verify that it works! I couldn't just leave a loose cartridge on the sidewalk, though, I'd have been wondering about it to the end of my days. The same box also had a a Game Gear and a few cartridges for that. The Game Gear needed some repairs, but now I have one of those, too.

The obvious (to me, anyway) solution: disassemble Melty Switch, extract the entire right rail module, and install it in Lefty Switch. That gets me a second working Switch, and I can keep Melty around for parts. As usual, the #iFixit guides (https://www.ifixit.com/Device/Nintendo_Switch) are my reference here. Good stuff. First roadblock was realizing that I didn't own a set of JIS screwdriver bits. I put in an order and waited a week.
