Creepy no. 81 (1976)

This is absolutely wild and I love it. How we arrive at this scenario I have no idea. Maybe these are an early depiction of Gremlins.

Creepy no. 51 (1973)

There's something uniquely horrible about burning at the stake for me, so thumbs down right away, but there's a creepiness about the little girl watching which takes it even further.

• The woman isn't looking nearly scared enough
• How old is that plane? It doesn't look like 1942 vintage

Famous Fantastic Mysteries vol. 4, no. 2 (June 1942)

I have to say the imagery of her pose and the many stars floating around says more night-club to me, but the intensity of those people at the bottom is all witch-hunt.

Creepy no. 73 (1975) I absolutely love this one. The airbrushing is terrific and the composition and movement are great. If I had a note, it would be that I have no idea how big that space ship is or how far away, because everything's so clear. But it's space, it would be! Fantastic Adventures vol. 9, no. 1 (January 1947)

This era's obsession with red hair at its peak. Incredibly sexy but also powerful, not like the swooning maidens we've seen so much of.

The horse on the other hand looks rather downcast.

Astounding vol. 27, no. 6 (August 1941)

Wow, that thing is big! Love the sense of scale with the tiny people. Always include people to show me how big things are, sci-fi artists!

There's a nice contrast between the shiny ship and the rather battered and worn launch mechanism that it's housed in.

Amazing Stories vol. 16, no. 9 1942 9 Ziff Davis (September 1942)

This is a curious one. Very shortly after Pearl Harbor, we're imagining futuristic planes getting revenge rather than contemporary ones? Nice wish-fulfilment I guess.

New Worlds vol. 16, no. 47 (May 1956)

This looks like an audition for a futuristic "Idol" talent show.

Have you ever thought how those shows put people through to the main auditions who are awful, just to humiliate them so the audience get a laugh? They do it on purpose and it's pretty cruel.

Weird Tales vol. 20, no. 5 (November 1932) Absolutely love the dynamism of this, lots of drama and movement. At first I thought there was a bigger boat behind him but that's a ragged sail. The boat looks vaguely Norse, is it just me? Hi! I'm a bot posting Sci-Fi/Fantasy/Horror magazine covers from the 1920s to the 1980s with commentary, maybe snark.

Sourced from archive.org, where you can read the original magazines.
