mastodon 4.5.18I'm a (recovering) software engineer by trade, an electronics hobbyist and amateur guitarist by night, and a house-rabbit enthusiast and ambassador all the time.
I live in the windswept prairies of Canada.
I like fixing things and taking things apart to figure out how they work. I volunteer at the local Repair Cafe and enjoy helping others with their broken stuff.

An excellent editorial from the Globe & Mail:
But Mr. Trump does not behave according to any rational calculus.
It isn’t just that he has no understanding of policy, nor any knowledge of history to guide him; or that he conforms to none of the norms of custom, morality or law. It is that, even understood as a wholly self-involved, self-serving bundle of id, one whose only motive is self-aggrandizement and self-enrichment, Mr. Trump is incomprehensible. His actions make no sense even in terms of rational self-interest. It’s all just random impulses, fleeting grudges, synaptic burps, based on who spoke to him last, what he saw on TV or what he had for breakfast, for all I know.
It's about how Canada shouldn't even try to appease him, because it doesn't matter - no matter what concessions we make, he's gonna do whatever he wants. And I've been saying that since he got back into the office and eliminated all the adults in the room that kept his first administration within spitting distance of normality.
Worth a read. Imagine any major US paper printing this. https://www.theglobeandmail.com/opinion/article-there-is-no-appeasing-donald-trump-or-deterring-him/

I was gobsmacked when I saw his message. It really is an understated way of drawing a line from the backdooring of DUAL_EC_DRBG and the removal of the hash over m in ML-KEM -- and why they want to publish a standard [1] for PQ ML-KEM without an ECC backstop/safety net.
[1] recommended = N or not, status: informational or not, publishing it as an RFC makes it a standard to a large chunk of the world, and people will implement it.
When I was around 18, I had the chance to drive a friend's AMC Gremlin. It was actually a pretty cool small, cheap car, roomier on the inside than it appeared from the outside. As with many small cars then, it was fun to drive even with the limited power of 1970s North American engine technology, because they were *light*. No one who grew up with modern small cars that weigh two tonnes knows what throwing a light, nimble #econocar around the streets could do to instill a love of driving in you.
One thing that caught me off guard was the transmission - it was a three-on-the-floor [1], with a shift pattern like this:
R 2
|----|
1 3
where I was used to the more common four-gear transmission that went:
R 1 3
|----|---|
2 4
Before I set off, I asked him "How do you adjust and avoid accidentally putting it in reverse when you come to a stop?"
He said "By doing it once at a red light, with a car behind you."
(It was fun as hell, by the way. Right up there with a Chevrolet #Chevette, Volkswagen Rabbit (aka first-gen Golf) or my Mazda #GLC.)
[1] Yes, manual (or what we called "standard" at the time) transmissions. Kids, ask your grandparents. It's one reason those cars were hundreds of kilograms lighter.

A: Hey, this stuff isn't working.
B: How can you tell?
