@realn2s@infosec.exchange @coolcalmcollected@mastodon.social @davidgerard@circumstances.run My former employer would have us do phishing training every year; and they are pushing AI hard as well. In the phishing training they say that a sign of a scam is trying to create a false sense of urgency. Then when they talk about AI, they say you might get "left behind."

@AmyZenunim If gen AI is so awesome, why are companies mandating it? Shouldn't its value just become obvious? I am reminded of something Tim Bray wrote about blockchain years ago: " I’m an old guy: I’ve seen wave after wave of landscape-shifting technology sweep through the IT space: Personal computers, Unix, C, the Internet and Web, Java, REST, mobile, public cloud. And without exception, I observed that they were initially loaded in the back door by geeks, without asking permission, because they got shit done and helped people with their jobs. That’s not happening with blockchain. Not in the slightest. Which is why I don’t believe in it." Quote from https://www.tbray.org/ongoing/When/201x/2017/05/13/Not-Believing-in-Blockchain

@Em0nM4stodon@infosec.exchange In addition to all of that: It really doesn't work. As a society we are spending more and more money for software that is less predictable and reliable. A lot of people are okay with destroying the planet for something that doesn't work reliably and most people do not want. Anyone with at least two working brain cells should have become anti-LLM and anti-chatbot the instant they understood the concept of hallucinations. #NoAi

@Crell@phpc.social WRT copyright: My employer (a large multi-national) requires all employees to take ethics training annually, and it makes a big deal about how ethics are so so important to the company. Yet they are also going all-in on GenAI, which as you stated cannot exist without violating copyright. So ethics are important, but we are betting our future on a technology made by doing things that would get an employee fired.

@parsingphase@m.phase.org I think there is a typo: "Anyone who thinks they will solve cold fusion or climate change is fundamentally understanding every aspect of the technology." Shouldn't that be "...is fundamentally misunderstanding every aspect of the technology"? Other than that, great essay so far.

@jonmsterling At my current employer, the More Bad Advice pinhead types all love it. The tech crowd is mixed. I think it will blow up either due to debt collapse or huge price increases that companies will be unwilling/unable to pay. (That is before pointing out that anybody with at least two brain cells talking to each other should have rejected it the instant they understood what a hallucination is.) Amongst the few non-tech people I know, most of them hate AI and wish it would go away.

@ppb1701@ppb.social I am reading "Do Not Blow Your Cover". I have a question about something: "Every file Claude Code looks at gets saved locally as plaintext JSONL and uploaded to Anthropic. " Just do I understand: Claude is sending a lot of a user's files to the mothership, presumably without telling them. Am I correct about that?

I am seeing a lot of signs at gas stations for $3.99/gallon. It is pretty rare for this many stations to have the same price.

I think a lot of stations are letting higher costs eat into their profits hoping something will resolve the Iran crisis, and none of them want to be the first one to have a sign starting with "4".
