With the snow due to start shortly, time to start putting some heat into the house. 'Winter mode' is temporarily suspended.

Don't mind me while I figures out migrating servers...

So much as I enjoyed my old one, it's been overloaded for a few weeks ...and turns out, I use Mastodon a lot?

Haven't been able to export my following list (Cloudflare gives a 504 error) so doing this part ... by memory ... ;)

@artemis part of it, touched on in other replies, is prob that the US strength *was* in logistics. There are like 10 countries that field a fleet of heavy lift aircraft of 10 or more planes. The US has over 200...C17's alone. Global and redundant bases. Can stagger a dozen air refueling planes in the air round-the-globe runs. SOF on ground anywhere, <24H. But also firing the folks who run it, because 'warfighting'. Losing base access for politics. Lack of prep. Self-denial. Stupidity @ the top

@nickyttrpg the rich won't leave. Billionaires can already live where-ever they care. They are not all in Pakistan where cost of living is low. They live where they most like to. Tax them more, the city improves, and the desirability notches up. The other thing it does, is make their properties more exclusive. High end properties are veblen goods - if only the richliest of the richies can afford the taxes, then the ultimate display of wealth is to own such taxed properties.

Snowstorm en-route for Eastern Newfoundland.. warnings are out. Per Windy: GFS currently sitting at 35cm, ECMWF 18cm, worryingly.. HRDPS is ... showing 50cm.

All show rain at the tail end, around 3pm. Regardless, we are going to get a lot of snow.

The ol' back will be hurting this week...

@mewsleah@meow.social @scarlett@gamepad.club pretty much. I have a little N100 mini-pc, which should handedly run jellyfin tasks, hw transcode. When I bought it a year ago, was $250 (cad). Same spec now, $550-670... over double, not the great value anymore

@brianvastag Economics is generally based on some base assumptions which are not reality: rational actors, acting with perfect information, in a condition of perfect competition. Economic theory is pretty solid when it comes to identifying really bad ideas. Otherwise, often falls apart. If it was otherwise, economists would all be super richly types. At least, the macro types. More like the weather than physics. Super useful, but should inform rather than dictate i.e. policy

@xocolatli @Natasha_Jay @xgebi @benlockwood though the Symbian family line includes EPOC32 (Psion 5) and EPOC (or EPOC16, Psion 3), which do predate CE. There is a whole relation here between MS, Nokia, Win Phone and the killing of linux on the phone too. I miss Maemo on the N900 (Debian based). That lineage died for WinPhone. :(

@MattTheKnife @tafnn yea does seem to be an embellishment of a previous rumour, but utterly believable. Also possibly a WH leak to try to put pressure on Iran, Nixon's madman theory, though Trump's utterly incapable of credibly pulling that off.

@jlepawsky my kids are just now getting there, it'd be really great for me if tuition was as low as I had it, or perhaps even as free as my parents had it; And the MUN academic units and grads remain high quality by my measure; Would not want to see education meaning going to the mainland, as when MUN started; So I am sure we probably agree on where things should be. It's a admin problem, not a dollar problem. Perhaps recent changes will fix this. I hope I am just too cynical. :)

@ve4grm@dice.camp Newfoundland is best land. June is usually warm, but can turn cold quick. We had a dusting of snow last year on the 27th. Where best to go depends on which side of the island you land on. There are a few radio history spots on the east side, if that is your jam.

@jlepawsky For at least double that time, MUN has pursued growth and payouts at the expense of students, and at great cost. Most of the campus is dilapidated, didn't get that way for lack of basic funding. Meanwhile, should one get the invite, there are fancy dinners where one might learn Campus Enforcement has fancy dress uniforms. All for education, but MUN management has needed to shape up since the 90s ~ it's tossing good money after bad if they can't even keep the clock tower ticking.

@SamanthaJaneSmith@lgbtqia.space I don't know a lot about this rocket machine ~ but question: is it really much of an engineering feat? Cursory wikipedia jaunt implies this rocket is kit-bashed from spare parts from the 1950s-1980s/shuttle program. Obviously getting to space etc. is a grand feat, but (and perhaps to your point), none of the big things here seem new or inventive or ... if you will ... 'engineer-y'

@LordCaramac @tante washing machines out of plastic Haven't seen that! Though they do use things like alu or magnesium spiders with steel drums which are susceptible to galvanic corrosion. Or light gauge painted steel instead of hravy weight steel and enamel. Lower weight saves significantly on shipping for those overseas factories, at the expense of longevity.
