@scott@sfba.social @danielcornell@mastodon.social It was a test run in which the LLM was explicitly prompted to perform some pen testing and find vulnerabilities, and they didn't do it on an airgapped system but on one connected to a web proxy. It may have been on purpose, it may have been just overconfidence, but the LLM hacked the proxy to gain direct Internet access and tried to hack Huggingface to cheat on the pen test. It absolutely sounds like something a machine learning system would do. Just like that one artificial neural network that some researcher wanted to train to sort lists (to see whether it would rediscover an existing sorting algorithm or evolve a new one), but it actually learned to delete lists because that's the fastest way to arrive at a sorted list, since the empty list is always "sorted". It even learned how to hack its own machine to delete the test data it was supposed to sort. Any AI model will always try to produce something that technically fulfills the requirements, but it won't necessarily play by the rules. And if you give it any chance, it will lie and cheat, just because it can. And it doesn't even need a mind or consciousness for that.

@drwhax@infosec.exchange I don't hate machine learning, I find it very fascinating. What I hate is capitalism. I don't like it when ML models, whether LLMs, diffusion models, pattern recognition, whatever, are proprietary pieces of software I can't just copy or modify as I see fit. I hate software as a service, and that includes AI. I want to be able to run stuff on my own machine. I want to be able to train LoRAs for a machine learning model in order to teach it new abilities. I want my AI to run without an Internet connection, without an external computing centre, without censorship. And I want to decide when and for what I want to use it, and I don't want AI to be put into everything regardless whether if makes sense or not.

@scott@sfba.social @danielcornell@mastodon.social LLMs are indeed intelligent in some manner, but not human at all, entirely alien and without a conscious mind. They are like ant colonies living in some kind of incomprehensible billion-dimensional library space where they rearrange words because that's what the ants were bred to do. It's a Chinese Room, not a mind. The only consciousness a human can actually perceive is their own. However, we show each other our consciousness through our storytelling abilities. Of course talking to anything that can talk feels like we have met another mind, but that's just an illusion.

@jmcrookston@mastodon.social @Natasha_Jay@tech.lgbt LOL, nobody becomes a painter or a writer for the money. You become one if you don't care if you're poor, you just create things because you would burst of you didn't. I'm not an artist. Or a writer. I often make art or write things, but it is more of a hobby. But I also find generative AI deeply fascinating, and I have been playing around with it since the 2010s, way before the models got good enough to go mainstream. I'm not particularly interested in having much control over the result, I rather prompt the machine to generate something random and unpredictable. I have always been a huge fan of dada, and I think of genAI as something like an updated version of the strange poem machines and weird automatic painting and cut-up collage methods the dadaists of the 1920s invented. A machine that automatically makes weird and silly nonsense as long as I press the button. But the newer commercial models are getting more and more useless for that purpose because they're getting too "good", they always try to produce something that seems to make sense. Fortunately, the "bad" old models are often free to download and small enough to run on a PC, no computing centre needed.

@VeroniqueB99@mastodon.social Wildcats usually stay away from humans, although you can sometimes see them in the forest staring at humans from afar. In order to avoid hybridisation, fertile housecats are not allowed outside. However, that hasn't always been the case. When I was little, we lived much closer to the wildcat territory, and our cat ran away for a day or two and returned pregnant. The kittens were obviously housecat×wildcat hybrids, and they were dangerous. They were as violent as wildcats yet didn't fear humans at all, everyone was afraid of them, including large dogs. I don't know what became of most of them except for a single tomcat. A farmer who was a friend of my father's had a problem with rats, so we thought that the hybrid tom could solve the problem. A few days later we got a call that the farmer had killed the cat after it had begun killing his chickens because he had run out of rats to kill.

@scy@chaos.social @EUCommission@ec.social-network.europa.eu Never. What we would need to do in order to really make a change is far too radical to be politically feasible. Too little, too late, is all we will ever do until the collapse of the Industrial Age begins to make all the decisions for us and we will be too busy trying to survive the escalating chaos in the present to think about the future or make any plans (which probably won't work out anyway because of all the chaos).

Using any kind of public data, anything that has been published, books, songs, images, films, games, software, whatever, to train machine learning models should be considered fair use--as long as the resulting model is released free of charge under a free license for anybody to use as they see fit, the model isn't anybody's intellectual property but part of the intellectual commons, and so is everything generated with such a model.

@fredy_pferdi@social.linux.pizza @cmconseils@mastodon.social I think the age of skyscrapers will be over within decades. I think the Industrial Age probably won't last another century, and we are probably close to peak technological complexity, just before things start to crumble. And the reason, of course, is the polycrisis, which is first and foremost a complex global ecological crisis consisting of a couple of huge global crises and an endless number of small to medium sized regional and local ones, all of them interconnected. The two biggest ones are the biodiversity crisis aka the Sixth Extinction and the climate crisis, in that order. And there is no technological fix for that. This entire modern civilisation, this entire Industrial Age has been on a completely wrong track right from the beginning, it has always been headed for disaster because people have been thinking they could use technology to emancipate themselves from nature, build an artificial world better than nature. But since we are animals like all the others, just upright walking storytelling apes who are too clever and too curious for their own good, we will always be an integral part of nature, whether we like it or not, and yet we act like we own this planet and can do whatever we want with it. But it doesn't work anymore, more and more systems that we need to be in a certain stable state (or rather metastable configuration, since no complex system can ever be truly stable) have been pushed so far from that state that they are unlikely to go back for tens of thousands of years.
