This moose is cassoworried, and very glad that he's on the opposite side of the planet from them. 3:O((>
I'm reminded of the bit in "The Lost Continent" where Death (having been nearly buried under a pile of books for asking about "The dangerous wildlife of XXXX") asks instead for "The non-dangerous..." and a single sheet of paper floats down with "Some of the sheep." written on it.

ROFL I really must look into setting up a VPN for Chez Moose. Being a grumpy old git of a moose (old enough that even the supermarket ladies don't ask me for age verification when buying beer), all this nonsense is extremely irritating.

Local water authority? (Round here (Birmingham) I think it's Severn Trent Water who are responsible for rivers & streams rather than the council.)
If all else fails write it up for the local press and include the full correspondence - that might light a fire under somebody and get some action taken.

This moose managed to get and open the PDF, but the URL inside it was in flaghoist and I can't find my Admiralty Signal Manual right now. I'll send my response by blinker light later.

...of byproducts (Coal Tar, Sulphur, Ammonia (I think)) and these were extracted for the chemical industry input.
The Carbon Monoxide was what killed people, the Hydrogen made it easy to ignite with a hot wire. (Hot-wire lighters wouldn't work on natural gas (Methane) and had to be replaced by spark types.) The characteristic smell added to warn people of leaks was one of the alkyl mercaptans (Ethyl CH3CH2SH or the Butyl version). 2/last

"Town Gas" _was_ clean, and carefully scrubbed to remove unwanted compounds (after which they added the warning smell) before pumping it into the gasholders. It was a mixture of carbon monoxide and hydrogen, made by passing steam over red-hot coke until it cooled down ("Water Gas") then blowing air through the coke bed to raise the temperature, giving CO, CO2 and nitrogen, ("Producer Gas") and blending the two to get a standard calorific value. There were lots 1/2

I must admit that if I'm not in a hurry I will wait for a gap rather than push the button and inconvenience a load of motorists, increase fuel consumption, et cetera. (Admittedly this is on a dual carriageway with multiple sets of traffic lights, snd good visibility unless someone has parked a delivery van and blocked the view, at which point it's push the button and wait until everything has come to a halt.) Then repeat for the other carriageway. Care is definitely needed. 1/

@cstross@wandering.shop The traditional solution is the "Beresford funnel" and (if you really must) a commode, but those are mostly for AFVs and aircraft. Modesty is definitely not an option...

Definitely right.
Right now I'm trying to decide what to re-read, and maybe starting at the beginning with The Family Trade is the way to go.
(I'll get interrupted by the next instalment of Murderbot, of course, but that will only be a temporary hiccough.)

I can well believe it, he's one of the best (if not _the_ best) professional broadcasters, and able to deliver anything with a straight (or appropriate to the content) face.
I do wish someone could animate the Larson cartoon about the drunken aardvarks and the stolen wrecking ball and get him to do the commentary though.... 3:O)>

I don't trust the motorists - someone was killed on that particular crossing many years ago by a driver "in a hurry" who swerved into the outside lane at high speed and went through the crossing on red lights - pedestrian stood no chance at all.
Recently they've reduced the speed limit from 40 mph (treated as 60 by some) to 30 mph + speed cameras, which has made things a lot safer - and reduced the frequency of railing replacement due to crash damage by the speed freaks. 2/2

This moose remembers some early CMOS integrated circuits where the substrate was connected to a pin that could be either +ve or -ve depending on the type. This was jokingly referred to as "Chip Destruct" (by analogy to "Chip Select") by various equipment designers, since the wrong polarity could have spectacular (and expensive) effects.

the plastic 'glass' falling into the bathroom sink makes an *EXTREMELY* loud and convincing theatrical sound effect of smashing glass explained everything.

Oh well, I'm up now. Let's see what the day holds for a rather sleepy moose. If it's too wet outside I shall continue tidying the "office" so I can (a) lift the floorboards to check the wiring, and (b) rearrange the furniture layout in here and think about carpet tiles on top of plywood as an improvement to the flooring. 2/last

Yes, but I've got all the originals in hardcover. (The rare _unsigned_ version.) 3:O))>
(I tended not to buy softcovers because of their tendency to disintegrate on repeated reading.)
I suppose I could hit BigRiverCo for the three volumes and confuse myself at any plot changes though....

Ah! Barclays seem to be good at closing accounts for "inactivity". My main bank is the Halifax, which I moved back to after Lloyds screwed up with my current account in the late 70s. Now I find Lloyds have taken them over and the name itself is about to disappear. 3:O(>
Barclays have also messed up their teffelone bonking - I used to be able to pay both credit cards off with one call - no longer: I now have to do the authentication dance on two separate calls, so will drop 1 card.

@edavies@functional.cafe This moose had Visa and Mastercard from Barclays, back in the day, plus a current account I only used for the odd paper cheque... they cancelled the current account for inactivity, and subsequently turned the Mastercard into another Visa. Now the Halifax is finally being engulfed by Lloyds and turning _their_ Mastercard into a Visa one. I don't need three of the buggers! Might switch Halifax to another Building Society/Bank. (I don't do Apps, iPhone is for calls, SMS and 2FA.)

The Devil's DP Dictionary (Stan Kelly-Bootle) had an entry along the lines of "JCL was designed to prevent programmers running their own programs."
(This moose got retired a couple of years ago and still misses it occasionally.)
