@Tutanota@mastodon.social I already said "block them for a week or month and see what happens" That not only counts for Google but also for Meta, Amazon, Microsoft, Apple, Palantir etc. If they violate our laws they will not be permitted to further do business here until they comply. That would also somewhat clean the heads of the people shouting "sovereignity" in the EU and show them how dependent we really are on these services and companies.

@JulianOliver@mastodon.social They cannot resist milking you for your data, if you're willing or not. The "having total control" vibe is getting bigger with every iteration of the OS. And they wonder why many are reluctant to upgrade to Win11 and keep running on Win10 or simply installing Linux instead of upgrading.

@nixCraft@mastodon.social That's what you get after market consolidation. In the past for example i can remember more than 10 companies which made harddisks. Now there are ... 3? Like with RAM. And they're dictating the prices now, keeping supply low to keep the prices up. There's no real competition anymore. Oligarchs through and through.

@gerrymcgovern@mastodon.green If this will ever get built, i wonder how this turns out if for example the electricity fails and all the emergency generators (must be hundreds of them) spin up all at once. This is neither eco friendly (most certainly gas powered) nor a silent operation, considering that people live around that area. This will so drastically devalue your property and your quality of life if you currently live near this area. When they start construction, you better move far away while you can.

@sundogplanets @wraptile Well, you can also spy with the satellites. Can't do that with a cell tower (not that effective) and destroying one satellite does nothing to the system. I really wish China would launch their own 10.000 satellites and program them on a collision course with the Starlink ones, forcing all of them to enter the atmosphere and burn out. I would personally thank Xi for making astronomy possible again 😉

@sarahjamielewis@mastodon.social I find it totally irritating that you basically need to update your browser on a weekly basis because you constantly stumble over websites which don't render correctly because the dev HAD TO implement the latest shit and cutting edge framework. What's wrong with plain HTML and a little CSS? I still remember the days when a browser fit on a 3.5" floppydisk and did every thing you asked for.

@gerrymcgovern@mastodon.green Do not forget the big companies like Coca Cola, Nestlé etc. They are also sucking up the/your (cheap) ground water to sell it back to you in the supermarkets for 1000% profit. And they do not care about the environment either. And they're already doing it way longer than datacenters owners and they also did not stop during droughts. It's always not just one to blame, it's usually the sum of the culprits.

@gerrymcgovern Just reminding everyone that it can happen to EVERYONE, yes, also to YOU. And the AI companies simply reply by saying "Oops, i did it again" "Sorry, but not sorry" "Huh?" Long version: "Yes, AI can make mistakes. We forced it on you, so live with it. Nobody here cares. Yes, we trained it, but with YOUR data we partially illegally sucked off the internet. So it's technically your own fault the AI behaves that way. Don't blame us."

@moh_kohn@mastodon.scot Every web developer should read this! I usually use NoScript to browse (safety first) and i loathe websites which don't show anything without javascript. You don't need an overloaded engine or framework to display some text and some images. That can be done with simple CSS and HTML. The motto should always be "customer first". If that results in more work, then so be it. That's what the employer pays you for.

@jenniferplusplus@hachyderm.io I wouldn't compare AI with a genie rather than with Pandora's box because you won't get AI back into anything. Not that AI is good or bad but too many companies and investors have pumped so much money into AI that it's about time to think of ROI. AI is no charity even though one of the leading companies has Open in its name. So, imo AI stays as long as the investors don't have their money back and it can take a long time until that happens. And then the earning starts.

And since this is a desert, i assume there isn't much water around for cooling. Also, i can only guess the number of backup generators they'd need to secure operation. Gas powered of course. And are they talking about carbon neutrality? Being the good greenwashing company?

@TheBreadmonkey@beige.party Why would you spend your own money when you can loan other's money? Then you can spend your own money on something else. Also, having debt lowers taxes as well. Money becomes cheaper over time due to inflation and prices raising and stuff. So, taking a loan can be more beneficent than spending your own money. Also, our financial system is built on debt. More debt means better economy. So that's 3:0 for loan vs. own money.

@jwi @ChrisMayLA6 That's analog to private hospitals and geriatric care and so many other institutions. Either they're excessively expensive or they provide substandard care to maximize profits. Of course they would never admit it but when you look under the hood... It would not have been privately run if there was no profit to make. I'm saying that for decades: some institutions simply do not belong in private hands.
