Except it’s even worse than that. In this analogy, the bus doesn’t even take you to Balham, really, most of the time. You arrive at the next suburb over, or in an eerie simulacrum of Balham that gives you the creeps.

"What do we learn from all this? Mostly the same thing we learned when the crypto bros repeatedly rediscovered financial fraud, or when effective altruists decided the most effective altruism was to buy themselves a castle, or when ride share companies kept accidentally reïnventing the bus. If you start by ignoring everything that we already know, the best you can ever hope for is to accidentally rediscover the already-known."

Why is it that it’s only on here that people are talking openly about how bad most LLM output is? People might joke about its ‘quirks’ and hallucinations, but otherwise it seems to be universally accepted that AI is Very Important.

At the consumer level it’s making products worse. Google search is worse (and that was a high bar. It had already been pretty thoroughly bastardised). Autocorrect is worse. All the small interactions we have with tech are worse and no one is talking about it.

@CiaraNi @qurlyjoe @inthehands I’ve seen this a few times but those companies inevitably get new management eventually and either offshore everything or, now, move to AI agents. My car insurance company used to have local agents on the phone and they were lovely to talk to. It was a real point of difference. Now it’s a mix of AI and offshore call centre staff and their phone trees are a nightmare.

@xerge @marjolica @Eetschrijver @grrlscientist In Australia we have to register ourselves to vote. Once you’re registered you’re legally required to vote at every relevant election from local council up to federal. But if you never register, you can avoid voting. I’ve only ever met one adult in my entire life who admitted to not registering. Aussies overwhelmingly view voting as both a privilege and a civic duty.

Reading about Oswald Mosley and pondering the difference between his very stereotypically macho (‘swashbuckling’, apparently) mass appeal vs Trump, who when you think about it is actually not very conventionally masculine at all. He’s all soft and big bottomed and small handed and milkweed voiced.
