Your playbook failed. Management wants a root cause. You have 30 seconds. Introducing larvitz.bofh, an Ansible collection that returns Bastard Operator From Hell excuses: "Root cause: The mainframe tripped over an unhandled SIGSEGV in the automated espresso machine." Seedable, so each host keeps its story straight. Bonus category: Deutsche Bahn. https://codeberg.org/Larvitz/ansible-bofh #Ansible #BOFH #SysAdmin #DevOps #Codeberg #Humor #Linux

New post: Keeping Ansible Passwords out of the File System I have used the HCL Connections automation project for years. I abandoned my own Ansible roles for deploying Connections and switched to it. The project works, but it misses some basic practices, it stores passwords in clear text, and its variable inheritance makes environment-specific settings … https://stoeps.de/posts/2026/ansible-vault-environment-passwords/ Reply to this toot to leave a comment - replies will appear below the article automatically. #omb #ansible #automation #security

New toy for FreeBSD folks who run Ansible: a become plugin for mdo(1), the mac_do(4) counterpart to sudo/doas. The kernel decides whether the credential transition is allowed, so there is no password, no TTY, no doas.conf, and pipelining just works. Single file, BSD 2-Clause, tested against 15.1-RELEASE. https://github.com/chofstede/ansible-become-mdo Feedback welcome, especially from anyone already using mac_do in production. #FreeBSD #Ansible #RunBSD #DevOps #Automation

A bug in my Ansible connection plugin needed a real FreeBSD jail to reproduce. So I put three of them on an idle 512 MB free-tier VPS. With pkgbase, the base userland is just 33 MB. And persistent jails use zero idle processes. Here’s the build, the regression test, and the two sharp edges that cost me twenty minutes: https://blog.hofstede.it/three-test-jails-on-a-512-mb-free-tier-vps/ #FreeBSD #Ansible #pkgbase #SysAdmin #Devops

Ansible is easy to install. A sane, reproducible development environment takes more thought. My downstream-first setup uses RHEL 10.2, Podman, VS Code Dev Containers, and Red Hat-packaged Ansible Development Tools, while keeping the boundaries between upstream projects, downstream products, development containers, and production Execution Environments explicit. https://blog.hofstede.it/sane-development-environments-for-ansible-automation-code/ #Ansible #RHEL #Podman #devop #linux

A re-introduction as it's been some time since I posted my last one. By day I am an unemployed linux sysadmin and devops engineer currently looking for new work. I specifically enjoy building automated deployments using Ansible. By night I've been an electronic music producer for ~25 years, making music inspired by kosmische, noise, idm, and ambient. Always looking to connect with others with similar interests. #ansible #linux #sysadmin #devops #industrial #music #bandcamp #introduction #idm

I'm in the middle of updating my Ansible dev machine setup scripts to support Fedora, and I'm thinking about just dumping Ubuntu entirely. I'm forced into Fedora w/ the MacBook Air (running Asahi), and it's perfectly respectable. I can't think of anything I'd be missing by making the jump. #Linux #Ansible #DotNet

Replying to

Since I re-image my Linux desktop so often, I have given a great deal of thought to preserving and re-creating my configurations.

So I wrote a single bash file to rule them all, sort of.

My script, dot, creates a tiny CLI Ansible installation, and interactively helps write a short Ansible playbook that defines symlinks, install scripts and Python environments.

I download the script and run ./dot --help to get started. Use dot check to review selections, and dot apply to ensure localhost is configured with them.

Because it uses Ansible under the hood, it doesn't do unecessary work, it provides detailed output, and it creates a file with a full definition of the configuration in a well know standard (which can always be re-used later, even without my script.)

If you add dot to your own dotfiles repository, and organize yours like mine (files, installs and reqs) then dot will use find your folders and offer to link your files, run your install scripts, or create your Python environments.

👋 Hello Fediverse! This account mirrors 20+ years of blog posts from fale.io, but never had a proper introduction. Here it is. I'm Fabio Alessandro "Fale" Locati, Senior Principal Architect @ Red Hat. For 20+ years I've helped organizations, from startups to Fortune 500 enterprises, turn automation, cloud and security strategy from a slide deck into something that actually works when it matters. 🛠️ Automation, containers, hybrid cloud, security 🐧 Fedora contributor, self-hosting & home automation enthusiast 🌍 Also contribute to Kubernetes, Ansible and other OSS projects 📘 Author of 5 books on Ansible and OpenStack 🎤 100+ talks at FOSDEM, CfgMgmtCamp, DevOpsDays and more 🎓 30+ active certifications because apparently I can't stop studying 🌐 Blog: https://fale.io Expect mostly tech here, some privacy/digital ethics, and whatever breaks in my homelab that week. #Introduction #FediIntro #Automation #Kubernetes #OpenSource #Fedora #SelfHosting #Security #RedHat #Ansible

Hello again, Fediverse, time for my #introduction First off, this account exists mainly to hopefully get #fedihired hopefully so set expectations accordingly. Boosts are appreciated. With that out of the way, I am Dennis also known as DeKayy. I am an OSS enthusiast currently living in the area around #Frankfurt , being fluent in both English and German. Outside of technology, my passions lie with equality, equity, independence, generally making the world a better and more fair place. A homelab and ever increasingly independent tech-stack is also what I call my own. On the career side, I have been a System and Network-Administrator for nearly 4½ years and counting. And as mentioned, currently on the lookout for new opportunities, preferable completely remote. I manage around 20 #Proxmox nodes professionally and 3 in my personal deployments, the amount of #Debian VM's and containers (including #Docker) sits somewhere in the hundreds. With #Ansible slowly getting established in every nook and cranny to help with the whole process. Monitoring is done on both sides with #Zabbix and serving web-requests with either #Nginx and #Apache, though I prefer the former. I use Let's Encrypt and Cloudflare quite a lot, also having built a certificate distribution framework to deploy those internally behind metaphorical split-brain DNS lines. Windows Server and Puppet are also not unfamiliar to me, they are currently not frequent acquaintances. In the direction of #DevOps experience, I use Git daily, I either setup, helped with or run Jenkins buildsystems, Gitlab instances, Gitlab-runners and more. Development-wise I created applications, tools and helpers in C#, Java, Bash, Powershell, Lua and Python, in order of proficiency. I bring enough social skills, experience, passion and conviction to help build and run an entire independent tech stack if one wishes for it and brings enough patience, time and budget. What I am looking for is primarily a remote position, 60% work-from-home is my minimum. This introduction post is getting kinda long so I will leave it here for now, reach out if you are interested. Later, DeKayy #sysadmin #fedihire#fedihire_de #fedihire_eu

I'm more than 25 years into IT at this point, but this is a first for me. Not one I'm proud of, but one I take responsibility for: My project ansible_jailexec (an Ansible connection plugin for FreeBSD Jails) had a bug that turned out to be a vulnerability. Improper Link Resolution Before File Access (CWE-59), a jail escape. It's been assigned CVE-2026-55074 so people can scan for it (I know it's bundled into Collections out there). If you're running < 2.0.0: please upgrade. 2.0.0 fixes it. Advisory: https://github.com/chofstede/ansible_jailexec/security/advisories/GHSA-cxgv-hp74-jj7r Release: https://github.com/chofstede/ansible_jailexec/releases/tag/v2.0.0 #ansible #cve #security #freebsd
