Ok chat I think I've just re-invented RSS: I have a lot of friends who have a lot of websites and they all update their websites, but I don't have a good way of getting a notification and then aggregating those notifications about those friends' websites / blogs updates. Is this what RSS is for?

@0xabad1dea@infosec.exchange definitely. Also for what it's worth, you might want to consider writing the legislators where he is incarcerated because despite not living in the US you are a family member and therefore you do have some stake.

@0xabad1dea@infosec.exchange this sounds like something I should write an angry letter to my representatives about. I wonder if there's any laws or legislation in the pipes that could make life marginally less horrible for incarcerated people.

When the last T series came out, I made the observation that the Wi-Fi module was not repairable. It still isn't, but they directly addressed that in this article, which is nice to see. I bet the following models will fix that.

@carlton I like to code on the train. There was a guy a few weeks ago who asked me what I was doing and so I told him, he then asked me where my Claude Code window was, and I told him I wasn't using Claude Code, and he said "Damn, that's hardcore..." As if... that's not what everyone was doing six months ago?

@sophie@floss.social You know what I'm gonna throw my hat in the ring here and agree with you and other folks like @gloriouscow@oldbytes.space and @volpeon@icy.wyvern.rip. It's honestly exhausting and the amount of toxicity and vitriol I see about AI, and is making me seriously consider taking a break from Mastodon. (https://www.librepunk.club/@gloriouscow@oldbytes.space/116224004631865768) There are good aspects to AI. It is a tool. Folks are building new medical technology, tools to help navigate phone trees, etc. The real problem is not AI. the tool. It's the billionare tech bros and their companies that are exploiting every resource this planet has (water, artists, electricity, RAM, etc) to fuel their delusional projects. I worry not about the existence of AI, but instead about what happens when the VC money runs out.

@SteveRudolfi@mastodon.social The article ends with a comment about how the "web" is "changing". How you need to use WebMCP and make sure your website offers the Google overlords the right "pieces" of the corpse of your idea. I say fuck that. I put myself on the web because I want to interact with real people doing real things in the real world. Sure, an AI might help them do that faster, better, etc. And yes, maybe I should make sure I use WebMCP because real people might really be trying to use AI to interact with my website. I try to have useful information on there that an AI could feasibly want. But because it's Google, and they have fucked me over more ways than I can count, I say No. That's not who I want in my community. 2/2

@Natasha_Jay@tech.lgbt fuck me, this thread is making me miss those days in the 2000s when me and my cousins and my friends and their friends would all sit around on the living room computer and swap software, websites, ideas and games. I'm in my mid-20s. I don't remember the dawn of the internet. I wasn't there. But i'd like to think that I managed to catch a glimpse of what could have been. We have to get back there.

@SteveRudolfi@mastodon.social This is horrifying, but it reinforces a truth we all already knew: The "Internet" as it exists today, is not a place for people like us anymore. It is a sad, fetid corpse lying in a gutter. Frankly I don't give a shit if Google shows my page. For me, Google was a write-off about 5 years ago. The people still using Google are not my community (note, I pick my words very carefully here. Visitors to my websites are not an "audience", they are a "community"). 1/?

@cousinsd @frameworkcomputer @iFixit @mms @cstross a step in the right direction ( not hard when the bar for repairability for the X1 has historically been on the floor) but I'm confused why the repairability score is 9 / 10 when you can't upgrade the RAM or WiFi chip. Also, the display is probably still glued together, right?

@ThePSF@fosstodon.org this is very interesting to me. As someone who maintains OSS Python projects, and who uses Python at work, I'm interested in figuring out if I can make my usage of PyPI more efficient. I appreciate the How You Can Help piece, because yes, I think we could cache packages very easily. We pin all our dependencies so we don't need to pull very often.

@sophie@floss.social @gloriouscow@oldbytes.space @volpeon@icy.wyvern.rip I can mostly agree with that, but I know some folks who are using Gen AI to help people navigate the nightmare that is American health insurance with great success. That kind of work is extremely beneficial. I'd also argue that using GenAI for political activism is beneficial as well. The force multiplication potential is huge. Of course with everything it's a matter of degree (furthering the general theme of this thread that we should avoid absolutist positions because they aren't constructive).

@AmyZenunim@unstable.systems Nooo Don't listen to the purists! Cast iron is super easy to care for. Scrub it without soap and oil it occasionally. If it gets rusty you can buff off the rust and re-season.

@sophie@floss.social @gloriouscow@oldbytes.space @volpeon@icy.wyvern.rip I'm starting to believe in a future where AI can be an equitable tool that runs locally, on your personal computer. In the same way that Nextcloud and Jellyfin can be self-hosted "cloud" platforms. It's already happening. I'm doing it today on my old work laptop. These open source models are getting good enough for it. AI is just going to be another tool in my self-hosted toolbox. And that's the way it should be.
