it's funny living in a society that views "male nudity" and "female nudity" as fundamentally different things

fandom meta and gender
But in general I have a problem with the way people have reduced the concept of misgendering to "calling someone the incorrect gender", switching the focus to correctness/incorrectness and switching it away from any meaningful analysis of systems of power

@totalclaireity@toot.lgbt yeah any time someone reveals that they do this, it instantly changes the way i talk to them over text. i become a lot more guarded. the public speaking voice sneaks in.

i grew up in a liberal community where queerness wasn't so much absent as deeply limited in scope. there was an emergent squeaky-clean gay male identity that was completely unrelatable to my boyhood self (it kind of required being the opposite of autistic). transsexuality was a medical curiosity that happened to other people. lesbianism was relatable to me, but that was a forbidden thought.

This is like the natural endpoint of never citing your sources, that aesthetics of presentation substitutes for provenance. You don't know where anything is from you just know its vibes.

@atax1a@infosec.exchange yeah i continue to believe that operating a social media account of his size is kind of like operating heavy machinery and "i didn't realize i could hurt people" should not be taken seriously as an excuse

And like, I'm not here to disparage the wisdom of things that people say in internet posts. Nor am I interested in giving undue authority to printed words. It's more like, when everything is churned into content, evaluating the authority of the source is a step you're discouraged from making.

Sharing that "traditional conservative family" post with my own caveat that I've found you can't necessarily trust leftists to not think of family in terms of ownership and control
(And no, I'm not interested in smarty-pants "those aren't actual leftists" responses, and indeed I'm willing to block people over them)

bsky poputrannies
Remembering that a lot of them are like that because they became friends with the site staff early on when the site was first advertising itself as "the trans-safe alternative to Twitter" and the staffers were building their "chill with the dolls" reputation. And yeah being friends with the staff is a quick way to get popular while ideologically aligning yourself with people who will happily throw plenty of trans people under the bus but not for being trans haha what are you talking about you sound so crazy right now

sleep and lack of it
If you regularly get less than eight hours of sleep, and use that fact to pressure other people into sleeping less, you need to stop that. Right now. Today. You could be causing them damage resulting in lifelong sleep disorders.

AIDS
like i wouldn't say it's a neat generational split, because there are a lot of factors at play here. AIDS never fully went away just because it became treatable, now it's only "over" in places where treatment is available. and of course your childhood conception of sex and queerness is gonna be influenced largely by how the adults around you talk about, which is not necessarily gonna line up with the actual science.

my position in this whole thing was that i was born in the united states of america in the early 90s; my awareness of queerness was curtailed by the death tolls of the late 20th century, and then, at the dawn of the 21st, expanded by the internet
