KDE's shake-to-enlarge-mouse-cursor feature did not need to keep making it bigger as long as you keep shaking it with no upper limit. That was not necessary. But it was 100% the right call. Whoever wrote that code: I salute you.

Given the situation in the US I'm now living in Canada, and I'm looking for a new job as my current one is obviously American. If you are or know a Canadian employer with use for a person in Toronto with a good understanding of SQL databases, Linux administration (mostly Debian but I can do Fedora), HTML-based Web backends, ServiceNow, and Microsoft cloud offerings, plus some networking experience (office networks and outbound-filtering firewalls), technical writing skills, and significant programming experience with Rust, Python, C#, and PowerShell, please get in touch via email or DMs.

Sometimes I spontaneously invent euphemisms, for some reason. Today's example is "completed a trajectory intersecting the surface" (for "crashed").

It's kind of cool that we have a modern de facto standard equivalent to the S-100 in the #RC2014 bus.

It's true what they say: If you want a public domain book for your e-reader, get the Standard Ebooks edition. The few minutes' effort is worth the quality difference over the Gutenberg copy/pastes on manufacturer-approved stores.

The Apollo Guidance Computer was an extremely cool piece of equipment and its software was perhaps even cooler. That is all.

@stellarskylark@solarpunk.moe Well they use server-side rendering for new sessions I think so presumably that's why new tab is fast. As for why navigations are slow. Well that's a great demonstration of the Single Page App Ethos.

Assignment: Read Volume I, Chapter 2 of Inside Macintosh, First Edition ("The Macintosh User Interface Guidelines"). Choose a modern piece of substantial desktop software. Compare the software's user interface design to the guidelines. How does it deviate? Are those deviations for the better or for the worse? Why? Explain your conclusions.

This option allows swapon to work on files located on NFS mounts.

@ConnyDuck @wikipedia Wikipedia gained mobile support very early, before responsive design was well-developed as a field. The Minerva skin (mobile layout) probably stays around because of a combination of technical inertia (mobile behavior being coded around whether Minerva is in use) and simply being good enough.

Everyone who works on networks, and especially on network standards, should read RFC 8890: The Internet is for End Users. And, really, everyone who works on any technical subject.

@codl@chitter.xyz @reneestephen@mastodon.social This is standard practice; it's considered okay to add uncited statements that you know are true and can be cited, but you're supposed to add [citation needed] and preferably come back and add the citations later.

@nivex@tenforward.social Okay, well, you should be aware this is a showstopper requirement for a lot of Discord groups. Most have many channels and would be very frustrated if they were all condensed into a single chat.

Replying to
@nivex@tenforward.social Mmmmaybe but then you have to manually join a bunch of MUCs one at a time and then keep track of them. If you're in just three groups with a mere five "channels" each you now have to juggle fifteen MUCs which most clients won't group together even if they are from the same domain. I guess you could fix it with Gajim's "workspaces" but you still have to sort them by hand. Anyway this is probably not the place for this discussion in detail. I will see if I can find the XSF conversation you were talking about…

@nivex@tenforward.social Does XMPP have multi-channel groups now? I would love to be able to offer my XMPP server as a solution to the unfortunately-Discord-using communities I am currently in. Last I checked it only had group chats which were a single channel each. (For the record, Matrix's implementation is a mess because a "space" is just a bundle of actually-separate group chats.)

Chess in the style of Fire Emblem. A series of prearranged chessboards against a beatably-weak engine but all your pieces have names, personalities, character arcs, dialog, etc.
