This is the less tech-y, more social alt for @varx@infosec.exchange — but it's still going to be full of nerd stuff, naturally.

My kid asked a great question: Are you dissociating when you read a book?

(WIkipedia states that daydreaming is a type of mild dissociation.)

@autolycos@beige.party @mcnado@mstdn.social Oof. Loudest thing I've ever heard was a bike tire exploding in a basement (concrete floor) a few feet from my ear. Got the "bang" and then complete deafness. Then the whine of my hearing slowly returning, which took about a minute. My hearing hasn't been quite the same since. Can't imagine something loud enough to take tens of minutes for hearing to return properly...

@xgranade I've been pondering whether I should create a website that allows local restaurants to have a simple-ass web page for free. (Name, description, phone, address, and optionally hours and menus and other things that change frequently.) It wouldn't be particularly hard to do, and it could be a mostly-static site so hosting costs would be minimal. Most of the work would be verifying new pages (i.e. going out to visit the restaurant and make sure they exist and aren't GrubHub being a MITM).

@drwho @globalmuseum I saw some comments pointing out how the turtle doesn't close its mouth afterwards, and maybe has had a broken jaw. I have no idea, but yeah, that could explain some things. (Unlike those commenters, I don't blame the people on the boat for not doing more. Pulling that turtle up would be a non-trivial task, and they may not have realized the full situation at the moment.)

@MCDuncanLab @futurebird @BenjaminHCCarr They also describe this occurring in near-starvation circumstances (no sucrose), but I suppose they could be incorrectly discounting the fungus' ability to break down the agar for energy. I'm curious, what would you need to see to find such an experiment compelling? (Absent the discovery of specific biochemical pathways for harvesting the energy.)

@aparrish @nelson A lot of programmers don't seem to understand that security is the *absence* of a feature. Sure, features can sometimes be verified by looking at a program's behavior. But you can't use that to show that a feature is missing. The should-be-missing feature might be something like "Eve can read Alice's messages to Bob". If vibe coders are only checking for the presence of features, then can never detect the "presence" of security.

@futurebird@sauropods.win @byakushin@mementomori.social We have a binocular dissecting scope at home and it's pretty reasonable for bugs. The mag is only 1.7-3.4x (total) but it's great to have room to manipulate samples by hand above the stage. We got it from a bio dept that was replacing all their scopes with fancy new ones. This one is many decades old, cast iron. It doesn't even have a lamp — there's a mirror for backlighting. :-)

@MCDuncanLab @futurebird I suspect it strongly depends on what the actual ground-truth situation is, here. Like, if the fungi actually can fully independently derive energy from ionizing radiation, and that allows them to eat carbon sources that are otherwise metabolically unfavorable — I feel like that's something you could test. But if there's actually an interaction with a food source/pathway, that would be pretty hard to untangle. So it seems hard to know how hard this would be, up front.

@crazyeddie @drwho @globalmuseum Well, I believe them that it came up to the boat, and they only started filming after. I don't think this is a case of people abusing an animal and staging a "rescue" for views—how would that even work? As someone noted here: https://www.instagram.com/reel/DLU3CvNuC6d/ -- the boat crew may not have actually had any way of bringing the turtle to a specialist.

@glyph This *strongly* depends on what you mean by "singularity". I think you're conflating that with "hard takeoff paperclips scenario" or something. I can just barely (barely!) imagine a future where someone manages to use AI to get a more efficient form of AI, which would allow further bootstrapping without requiring more hardware. Same hardware gets more compute. You're spot-on about the supply chain limitations, though. Good luck to the AI that wants to dig up more cobalt or whatever.
