@82mhz Cool! I took the test and it sort of reinforced what I've been saying for a while, that being able to tell the difference in lossless audio is highly dependent on the type of music you listen to. On some of your examples I was able to confidently and correctly guess which was which after only one listen (and this was on Bluetooth earbuds!). Others were much more difficult and nearly identical.

Last thoughts on the Valve hardware announcements from today.

It really feels like Valve is one of the very few companies today still doing cool stuff in tech for the sake of it instead of just "number go up".

I've been following leaks and data mines pretty closely and I'm still surprised they revealed all three hardware projects today. They've been busy.

What is it about in-laws and thinking that "L:\Backup of OneDrive files to get rid of OneDrive\Another Backup of OneDrive\OneDrive_Recovered\OneDrive\Desktop" is a good place to put their most important files?

New blog post! I recently finished my first ever freelance game dev project. Godot is a great tool and I'm looking forward to doing more game dev stuff in the future.

@joel I don't recognize any of the ones you mentioned but I remember when cereal boxes would come with game demos. My favorite was definitely the Spiderman demo. Played it a bunch and it was long enough that I never really cared that it wasn't the full game.

How many computers do you have within arms reach right now? (If you have to ask: yes, it's a computer)

Anybody know of examples of video game box art featuring screenshots of cut content?

For example, the back of the Twilight Princess case had a screenshot from a period of development when there was still a magic meter mechanic like Ocarina of Time. The back of the Half-Life 2 case clearly showed an early version of an area that got entirely reworked.

@powRSS I'm a little bit torn because AI-assisted writing isn't something I'll ever be very interested in reading and ideally I'd appreciate it if a strict editorial stance was taken. But as other people have noted, there's not really a good way to enforce it. All you'd likely end up doing is punishing the people who are being up front about it while others hide behind the benefit of the doubt. AI assistance should definitely be discouraged though. I understand wanting to put out the best writing you can but I think if it were explained well enough that human writing is the best writing, some bloggers might not feel the need to rely on AI.

@amin I think it's more to do with them being a private company. I mean yeah, their number one goal as a business is to make money, but you can tell the difference when a company is doing something for their customers VS for their shareholders.

@cmccullough This is something that has been on my mind today too for some reason. Almost made a short post about it. Other issues aside, I think if quality is the concern then AI shouldn't change a whole lot. Open source maintainers are pretty smart people. I trust most of them not to torpedo their own projects with slop code by vibe coding and letting agents run amok. And from an administrative perspective I think there are smart benefits to having a permissive AI policy for contributions. You're going to get AI contributions no matter what. At least when it's disclosed you can give them a little extra scrutiny and try to validate that the contributor actually knows what they're doing.

@cmccullough I'm with you there. The good thing is I think we're already seeing signs of cracks appearing in the bubble. Hopefully we don't have more than a year, maybe two, before the whole system collapses.

@joel@fosstodon.org Wow, brilliant move. The custom firmware is a massive reason why people are buying the device in the first place. Where'd you read the news?
