@idzie@kolektiva.social I live lower than the mountains, higher than the desert, in the valley directly next to mancos shale formations that once held marine life but now house tough drought resistant animals including prairie dogs, coyotes, red-tailed hawks and golden eagles. Saltbrush and sagebrush rule the land, but hookless cacti and junipers add variety. One of the few North flowing rivers brings life to the area before joining the river strong enough to carve many of my continent's steepest canyons.

You can't become a licensed attending physician without completing a federal residency. Every year in March, thousands of medical students undergo Match Week. Hundreds won't match.
I know many who haven't. Often, they are stellar students. They don't match for a multitude of reasons (like being visibly gay or unable to afford to fly to in person interviews ) but rarely it's because they'd be bad doctors.
We need more doctors, but every government -Dem and GOP- purposely doesn't increase them.

@idzie@kolektiva.social this was exceptionally fun because I don't think I've ever tried to describe where I live without naming the rivers and the steep canyons.

@elaterite @skinnylatte as a transplant that isn't from California but is from somewhere very blue- it usually has to do more with the buying power. There is an unreal amount of Californians who move to my area of Colorado and buy houses, often site unseen, for prices that no one else can afford and therefore drive up prices so much that locals have to move. Often working in tech from home and contributing nothing to the local community. It's understandably frustrating.

@checkervest@laserdisc.party HAPPY BIRTHDAY!! I hope you have a nice day and get ample opportunities to do nice things for yourself!
today I wore a comfy outfit to work that definitely pushes the casual side of business casual but it's a heat wave and I have a ton of outbreak data entry to do so I don't care lol

@futurebird@sauropods.win it's a big issue and it doesn't get enough support. I was at a presentation by a liaison of my attorney general and she said Colorado is getting 2-3000 complaints a month about fraud/scams, mostly in the elderly population. And that's just the people who go through the process of filing a complaint over it.

@marjolica@social.linux.pizza @Thekingoflorda@mastodon.world @MilitaryG@mastodon.gamedev.place @kityates@mas.to the V in RSV is for virus. RSV season is generally only a 3-5 month long season that is easily trackable, administration can be extended if the season extends (as it did this year in the US)
It is a monoclonal antibody. That's just what it is, no debate about it. It's fantastic, I am extremely upset that in the US they made it so only adults over 75 can receive it when previously 65+ could, that's a money decision not a public health decision.

@Thekingoflorda@mastodon.world @MilitaryG@mastodon.gamedev.place @kityates@mas.to the RSV vaccine is not brand new, it's been used in pregnancy, newborns, and older adults since 2023
In fact calling it a vaccine isn't even true- its just an antibody. It only provides about 5 months of protection making no permanent immune system changes.

@angelteeth@kolektiva.social thank you so much it's all so exciting! It's about 4 hours from us which isn't too terrible. I hope you get a chance to explore around the west slope I'm always happy to give recs if you decide to come to any specific area. Grand Mesa is my personal favorite 💚

@angelteeth@kolektiva.social @idzie@kolektiva.social wow incredibly close!! Instead of being where the Gunnison joins the Colorado I'm slightly east where the Uncompaghre joins the Gunnison, so it's a little under an hour to the top of Grand Mesa for me!

@c_reider@sonomu.club I fully think it's ok
I don't have any delusion that turning my 2.7 acres into thriving wildlife habitat and productive food growing space can offset ~insert thousands of pages of climate change research here~
but it makes me happy, it makes my life feel purposeful, it brings joy & life *right now* despite the uncertain future
I mean the time goes on no matter what. Might as well pour into something that feels worthwhile to you specifically, who could regret that?

@Troggie that's really difficult!
I work for a public health department in the US, so where people without insurance/choices have to go, and we still try to make it as pleasant as possible through easy free things any provider with enough time can do- lavender essential oils, encourage patients to listen to music or watch cat videos, and explaining the procedure in as much detail as a patient wants. Things that are really only possible because our volume is fairly low compared to most offices.

@marjolica@social.linux.pizza covid on the other hand reliably has a summer spike that in some areas is often worse than the winter spike. The flu vaccine also doesn't last all year but isn't given twice like covid.

@chris_evelyn@fedi.chris-evelyn.de @MLE_online@social.afront.org I live in a very republican rural area and meetups are thriving. I'm currently bummed because someone just invited me to join them for a POC LGBTQ+ rafting day and I don't really qualify anywhere in there so idk on that one.
Cities make it easier ofc but aren't the only place with cool people meeting up to enjoy life together. Meetups and events don't need to be perfectly tailored to one's favorite interests in order to be fun!
