Over the past few days and weeks, I’ve decided to downsize my digital and tech collection. I own so many computers, laptops, smartphones, smartwatches, accessories, and so on—I can never really use it all. I bought a lot of it just to own the latest “hot stuff.”

That’s why I’ve gotten rid of most of it—either giving it away or selling it for very little. And I’ve kept only the bare essentials. Often not even the newest or best.

For example: I now only use my Peladn Mini-PC with an old Ryzen 5 5500U as my computer; I don’t even use the newer, faster ones to their full potential, so I gave them away. I’ve now reinstalled Debian Stable on it, with an absolute minimum of programs—just the bare essentials: browser, LibreOffice, Tuta, Signal, VLC, Nextcloud, Localsend, Rustdesk.

I’ve moved away from Fedora because: Fedora = Red Hat = IBM = US Big Tech = US MAGA fascists.

I’m also saying goodbye to Proton and will only use Tuta and Posteo from now on.

All my new smartphones like the S25 Ultra, Pixel 10 Pro XL, etc., are gone; I’ve kept the cute Pixel 8a in beautiful blue, very compact, running GrapheneOS. That’s more than enough—it lasts almost 3 days, and here too, I’ve installed only the absolute essentials.

A week ago, I treated myself to a new monitor: the BenQ MA270S, a 27-inch model with 5K resolution, 2x Thunderbolt 4 ports, and much more. The picture quality is incredibly sharp—the best I’ve ever seen! It was actually meant to connect to my MacBook Pro, but of course, it works just as perfectly with all my Linux and Windows computers. Once you’ve experienced 5K resolution, you’ll never want to go back. And this monitor is significantly cheaper than an Apple Studio Display, which ONLY works with Apple. But this model works great with ANY operating system! I’ve never seen my Debian look this crystal clear!

After a week of intensive use, I can wholeheartedly recommend this monitor to everyone—and no, this isn’t a paid advertisement from BenQ, but my honest opinion.

Change of plans: I didn’t end up waiting for the upcoming Minisforum MS-03 Workstation after all, but instead decided on the ASUS NUC16 PRO on a whim. The reason was that Wendell from Level1Techs really praised this NUC in his latest video. He also highlighted the great Linux support from both Intel and ASUS. I’ve linked the video below. And unlike many Chinese manufacturers, you can easily find all the drivers on their support pages (both Intel and ASUS)—including those for Linux! Plus, the download servers are fast, unlike with the Chinese manufacturers... It has 32 GB of RAM, but unfortunately it’s soldered onto the motherboard on this model—though it does offer faster speeds. I had to buy the NVMe drive separately; I opted for a 1 TB WD Black SN850X. Since I store everything on the NAS, I need virtually no storage space on the computer itself—just enough for the operating system; 256 GB would be more than enough. But a larger NVMe drive means more speed and a longer lifespan. Other specs: Intel Core Ultra X7 358H, ASRock B390, 2x TB4, 2x 2.5-inch, 4x USB-A 10G, 1x USB-C 10G, 2x HDMI 2.1, Wi-Fi 7, Bluetooth 6, two M.2 Gen5/Gen4 slots. It’s a breeze! So, let’s install Linux on it! (To be on the safe side and to ensure the best possible support, it’ll be Fedora again...) My brand-new powerhouse: MSI Cubi NUC AI+ 3MG

Intel Core Ultra 9 386H processor, 32 GB RAM, 1 TB NVMe, and much more.

What a beast!

My first Intel-based PC in many, many years. But the new Panther Lake generation is currently superior to AMD. I couldn’t care less about the “Copilot” feature—who needs that crap? I certainly don’t. But I wanted a new, up-to-date, and powerful computer again for the next 5 or 6 years. And even though it wasn’t cheap, if I spread the purchase price of 1,500 EUR over 72 months, that’s 20 EUR per month, so the computer has actually paid for itself in even less time.

But I’m curious to see which Linux—or rather, which kernel version—will run smoothly on it, given all these very new components. My planned testing order: Debian Sid, Fedora with kernel 7.2-rc, and finally Arch. I don’t even need to think about FreeBSD right now, but maybe in the future.

It’s actually unbelievable: just for fun, I decided to go through the entire Windows 11 installation process on my new MSI Cubi. Let’s see how it goes these days. What can I say? Unbelievable! It took almost TWO HOURS just for the initial updates before I could even start setting it up! Are Microsoft’s servers that slow? The download took forever, not to mention the installations… And then the worst part: the pre-installed bloatware! Dozens of crappy third-party programs—and of course, they all want your data and a subscription… But Microsoft takes the cake: 22 (!!!) installations of Office 365 in the respective national languages! And each one is around 7 GB! That’s just 150 GB for a piece of junk software! And uninstalling each Office installation takes several minutes... I’m going to stick with this crap anyway, just because I want to know how much of my life setting up Windows 11 with MSI’s bloatware is going to waste today. The day’s already gone to hell anyway. #linux #minipc #msi #bloatware #windows #microsoft #opensource #freesoftware #crap

The past two weeks with Debian Sid and my new work setup—featuring two NAS devices and a new internal network—have been a success!

One NAS serves as internal storage for all my documents, photos, videos, etc., while the second NAS acts as a personal cloud connected to my smartphones, backing up photos and videos I take, which I then copy to my internal NAS at home—if relevant.

Conversely, when needed, I move necessary documents, photos, etc., from the internal NAS to the personal cloud so that I have the required materials on hand at short notice for appointments and the like.

That may sound cumbersome, but I consider it more practical not to have everything stored on a single device that can also be accessed remotely.

Tried something new again: installed a fresh copy of Debian 13 and then immediately upgraded it to Debian Sid. I have to say: so far, it’s running remarkably stable and smoothly. Kernel 6.19.14 and GNOME 50—very nice!

As usual, for privacy and data protection reasons, I’m trying to keep the system lean, with only the absolute essentials: Firefox/Librewolf, LibreOffice, Signal, Nextcloud, Localsend, Tuta, Mullvad VPN, and Freetube as an anonymous YouTube client.

Call me crazy... but I’ve got this complicated setup right now:

An old Pixel 8 Pro without a SIM card, with no apps installed—or rather, all apps disabled—and on it I’ve set up a second user profile where only the Aurora Store is running, and from there I’ve installed MullvadVPN and WhatsApp. No contacts saved, no Google account linked. On this second profile, my old WhatsApp number runs via the VPN and over Wi-Fi. Unfortunately, most of my friends are on WhatsApp, and very few want to install another messenger or switch, no matter how often or how hard I try to make them understand the dangers of WhatsApp or Meta in general. This dedicated WhatsApp smartphone just sits on my desk at home.

Just like my old iPhone 13 Mini for banking and ID Austria, the government app for Austria (official procedures, digital mailbox, etc.)

And last but not least, my Pixel 8a with GrapheneOS and my phone number for calls, texts, Signal, and calendar management on the go. I always have this smartphone with me; as I said, the other two just stay at home.

It might be a hassle—everyone else just uses one smartphone for this—but in return, I can use WhatsApp without Meta or Google gaining any access to my other usage behavior and data or being able to track my activities. I'm glad I kept these two extra devices when I did a major tech purge a few weeks ago.

Easter test weekend, initial findings. 😎 :fedora: On Fedora 44 Beta GNOME Edition, the file manager crashes every time I try to access my NAS. There are also frequent freezes with apps that weren’t included by default and were installed later. :ubuntu: Ubuntu 26.04 LTS also comes with GNOME 50, and unlike Fedora, it already includes kernel 7.0, which is great—especially for the latest hardware. This beta also seems to run more smoothly and stably than Fedora’s beta. However, it’s impossible to install or get Flatpaks to work, even though I installed the feature myself. It was also absolutely impossible to install the Nextcloud client, neither as a Snap nor as a Flatpak. I couldn’t get AppImage to start, even after making it executable. Nevertheless, both distributions already make a great impression and leave me wanting more as soon as they become stable. Ubuntu, in particular, has positively surprised me after many years; major strides have been made, whereas with Fedora, hardly any major changes are noticeable—they’re more under the hood. 👍 #linux #unix #opensource #freesoftware #fedora #fedora44beta #ubuntu #ubuntu2604 #gnome #gnome50 #kernel #kernel7

And by the way, I decided to give OpenSUSE Tumbleweed another try today. Since Debian has its little quirks with my keyboards and I don’t want to use a distribution with a U.S. background like Fedora, OpenSUSE would be the politically correct choice for me as a European solution.

For the past few weeks, I've been prowling around CachyOS like a hungry lion around a grazing herd of antelope. I even installed it once, only to return to my usual distribution a few hours later.

But it gnawed at me deep down—also because, after many years of abstinence, I wanted to install my old Steam library again and play a game or two. And according to all the enthusiastic reports, CachyOS is the perfect Linux for gaming. That's why I did it again yesterday and gave CachyOS a new – and this time fair – chance. It's really great and incredibly fast when you seriously get to grips with it!

Unfortunately, my experiment with CachyOS is over, even though I gave the system a fair chance this time. First of all, I really liked CachyOS. The speed is phenomenal, and everything would have been perfect except for one tiny detail that is essential for me: Localsend didn't work. And I couldn't figure out why. I was able to install the program easily, and my computer recognized all the devices around it. Except for the devices around my computer with CachyOS on it... and it was also not possible to send files from the computer to the recognized devices or mark them as favorites. Not even a firewall was activated or anything else in the network settings as usual. With all the other distributions I usually use—Fedora, Debian, OpenSUSE, Zorin OS, FreeBSD, even a “real” Arch—there are no problems at all. And since I'm constantly sending files and photos back and forth between my smartphone and computers and don't want to be constantly plugging and unplugging cables, CachyOS is not for my everyday use. I find that very unfortunate. But it's usually little things like this that make you less happy with a distribution or Linux in general than others might be. 😧 #linux #unix #opensource #freesoftware #cachyos #fedora #debian #zorinos #arch #archlinux #freebsd #localsend

Crazy... After a week of continuous use with Debian (with daily reboots in the morning), my Logitech MX Mechanical keyboard suddenly started acting up: some letters got stuck and were displayed dozens of times while I was typing. Other keys weren't registering at all.

Well, I thought, maybe there’s something wrong with the keyboard—dirt, crumbs, dust, or something like that. So I switched keyboards to an MX Keys—exactly the same issue. No improvement even with a third keyboard (Cherry, via cable).

So I removed the built-in NVMe with Debian, installed one with Zorin OS—absolutely no input errors. Same thing with an NVMe running Fedora. Everything back to normal. I’ve never experienced anything like this before. The mysterious mysteries of Linux. 😆

And what I didn't mention earlier, which I also dislike, is the recurring problem with malware in the AUR. So I no longer trust this source. I was bad... so damn bad! I went against my own principles! Out of curiosity, I broke my sacred vow NEVER to use something like artificial intelligence. Especially not for meaningless stuff, like most people use it for.

But then... I was looking for a new profile picture for myself.... and then... I got curious to see if all this artificial intelligence hype had any substance... if this AI is really as good in certain areas as many claim... so I tried out an image AI for the first time... and this is what came out: me as a UNIX Viking... I’m ashamed! So, judge me for my weakness!

But on the other hand: it does kind of look cool, doesn’t it?

@cmccullough@polymaths.social Thank you so much for your efforts! Well, with a Dell, it’s quite possible that it uses less exotic and more Linux-compatible hardware components than a Chinese mini-PC. I’d even bet on it... As far as I know, Dell is also Linux-certified. In the meantime (interestingly, I only get notified here 18–24 hours AFTER your reply that you’ve written, hence the long delay...), I’ve tried upgrading from Debian to Sid twice more, but without success. After the update, I always get a black screen with a blinking cursor, but zero response to input. That’s why I’m now running a normal Debian 13 again, which works without any issues. I suspect it’s because of the 7.0.3 kernel; there can’t be any other reason.

@cmccullough@polymaths.social Hi, quick question: still having no issues with Sid?? Two days ago, I saw a notification for an update to kernel 7.0.3, installed it, and ever since then my mini-PC has been getting stuck on a blank black screen after a few boot loops. A fresh install of Debian 13 followed by an upgrade to Sid results in the same error. So it’s unusable... One advantage of my Chinese mini-PC from Peladn is that you can simply remove the magnetic cover and immediately swap out the NVMe (and RAM). So I’ve now installed the SSD with Fedora 44 just to be able to work again. But apparently there are issues with the built-in hardware, I suspect.

@damienl Yeah, I know Thunderbird works great—but in KDE, you have to use KOrganizer so that the calendars also show up in the taskbar’s calendar overview. There’s no other way around it. And I use that feature all the time—just a quick click on the date with the mouse, and you can instantly see your upcoming appointments at a glance without having to open the calendar app first. Anyway, I’ve switched back to GNOME and GNOME Calendar. That works without any issues.

Why the hell do I constantly have problems with KDE Plasma and that piece of crap Akonadi???? Constant error messages, crashes, etc. whenever I try to connect to a calendar! It doesn't matter at all whether I try the Nextcloud Calendar, iCloud Calendar, or Google Calendar. And when I remove an online calendar, everything freezes—the entire KDE desktop. I’ve had this problem for years, no matter which version of KDE I use. I never have these kinds of problems with GNOME or GNOME Calendar. Akonadi is just a piece of software crap. 💩 #linux #opensource #freesoftware #kde #akonadi

@cmccullough@polymaths.social They've always managed to pull it off so far. 😉 Ubuntu has always been a bit of a no-go for me, if only because of its reputation as a “newbie distro” and, above all, because of its constant solo ventures or the perpetually outdated and poorly maintained packages. But at least 26.04 looks really good—a brand-new kernel and lots of new programs, with the old baggage thrown out… they’re finally on the right track.

@michaelharley Hello! Generally speaking, you can’t go wrong with a ThinkPad for Linux/Debian—as long as it’s not a newer model where driver and firmware support is still lacking. The ThinkPad T480 is generally considered the last “good” ThinkPad because you can still upgrade just about everything on this model—RAM, SSD, NVMe, Wi-Fi, etc. Driver support under Linux is also solid because this model has been on the market for a while, and as a widely used business model, it’s readily available (eBay, refurbished sellers), so spare parts are plentiful. I personally use even older models like the T420, T430, or T440p with Debian and Fedora, but those are getting a bit too old. That’s more for nostalgia’s sake. Otherwise, I mainly use a T490s because I wanted one that would support Windows 11 if necessary and, above all, is compact and lightweight. On the downside, aside from the NVMe and the battery, you can’t replace anything else yourself. That’s because, starting with the T490 and up, most components in ThinkPads are soldered in place. And the built-in 4G modem doesn’t work with Debian or Linux, which often causes problems. Otherwise, I’m very satisfied.

@cmccullough It’s been a while since I used Tumbleweed, and I wasn’t happy with it back then. I don’t even remember why anymore. Because now I’ve set up a system that works really well. The only issue I had at first was with Localsend; I had to configure the firewall to open a specific port. Other than that, everything works fine now. Debian would also be a solution for me as a global project, but something about it doesn’t like my keyboards or the Logitech receiver. But since I use a mini-PC as my main computer—where you can simply remove the magnetic cover and swap out the NVMe drive instantly—and I have several NVMe drives with pre-installed distros, including Debian, I can quickly test at any time to see if an update has fixed this issue. After all, it worked fine at first and then suddenly this problem appeared.

@logicite First of all: Stay away from /eOS—it’s far too insecure, poorly maintained, and still connected to Google’s servers via microG. No, that’s not quite how it works: GrapheneOS offers the option to run Google Play Services in a sandbox—but it doesn’t automatically isolate every app in a sandbox on its own. That’s why I have this setup, to make sure Meta (or Google) can’t get access to my data and activities through cross-device tracking and permissions.

@justincrozer@fosstodon.org Rumor has it that GrapheneOS's secret OEM partner is Samsung. This phone was supposed to be released this year, but has now been postponed until 2027 due to the chip crisis and other factors. In any case, it should work out. Then we would finally have a hardware alternative.

@damienl I have this problem with the Akonadi server on EVERY distribution I've tried, including my brief stint with Linux Mint, which I just don't like. And I can’t really verify it—sometimes it works as long as I don’t make any changes to the connected online account, then, like today during the initial setup, it doesn’t work at all, with constant crashes so that I can’t even select the relevant calendars from the calendar I just connected in KOrganizer to be displayed in the calendar overview in the taskbar (this is when the problems start every time!). And I ONLY have this problem with KDE/Akonadi; never with any other desktops or calendars. And I’m no clueless newbie—I’m a sysadmin who’s been working with UNIX since 1987 and with Linux since 1997. And it’s precisely this fact that drives me crazy—that I can’t solve the problem. That’s why it must be due to the software, over which I have no control.

@ezeno Yeah, and you’re absolutely right—that’s actually my opinion too. Complicated. But one thing I know for sure: I’m never using AI again. I tried it out once, and to be honest, I think the result is pretty cool and I can kind of see why a lot of people fall for it, but that’s it. And at least I have a new profile picture, even if it’s just pure nonsense. Because I have no way of getting my hands on an outfit like that, complete with Viking gear.

@ezeno That’s exactly why I don’t feel good about it. I never wanted to use that crap. I HATE AI. And everything and everyone behind it who’s ruining the internet and human society because of it. And yet I gave in. But thanks

@wagesj45 In short, in other words: this is fascism. And we here in Austria and Germany know this only too well from our own history and from the stories of our parents and grandparents. Trump is copying Hitler and his methods 1:1. But unlike Trump, Hitler was a highly intelligent madman. Trump, on the other hand, has the intellect of a toddler and the attention span of a housefly. But basically, he's just a puppet of Peter Thiel and Steven Miller—a Jewish Nazi, which is just grotesque and completely insane...

Speaking of which: I’ve been back on Debian for a few days now. In the meantime, there have been a few updates—maybe they fixed the keyboard issue? I don’t know. But in any case, it’s working fine now without any problems or keys getting stuck.

@truls46 Sorry, but these aren't mass protests, they're peanuts! Not even one-tenth of one percent of the US population is taking to the streets against Trump! When the first FPÖ government was sworn in in little Austria in 2000, over 300,000 people gathered at Heldenplatz—in a city with a population of one million at the time! Just to put it into perspective.
