Co-founder and lead of #OpenPrinting (since 2001), introduced CUPS printing system in Mandrake Linux in 2000 working at MandrakeSoft, with this and a lot of evangelism (booths, talks, workshops) made the other distros switch to CUPS, 2006-2025 at Canonical, 2025-2026 funded by Sovereign Tech Fund, co-organizing annual meetings with the Printer Working Group (PWG), since 2008 every year mentoring in Google Summer of Code, fellow of the Linux Foundation. Does everything to make printing just work!

Here is another testimonial of my work at OpenPrinting!

Nick from @thelinuxexperiment
has posted a video about the desktop software he uses for his day-to-day tasks on his Linux machine and at 19:24 min he tells how easy it was to use his HP multi-function printer on Linux with the KDE desktop and that, despite he considers printers "terrible", they always worked for him under Linux, while under Windows it was a nightmare.

@duke_of_germany@mastodon.gamedev.place

Herzog von Deutschland,

that is a bug. Especially these comment fields, description and location, should accept UTF-8 text, as many people want to fill them in their language, even worse for those who speak Greek, Hindi, ... (In German one can still work around with "Mein Buero", but this also only if one gets a clear error message so that one knows that the problem is the non-ASCII character in this field).

So please report a bug on
https://github.com/OpenPrinting/cups/issues/

The Linux Foundation got accepted as GSoC mentoring organization this year, so we from OpenPrinting will also mentor again!

We have amazing project opportunities on tap!

  • Printing integration in the COSMIC desktop (implemented in Rust).
  • OSS-Fuzz with AI-generate test harnesses
  • C++-free PDF renderer, permissive license
  • system-config-printer for CUPS 3.x
  • Cloud Native packaging of CUPS and printer drivers
  • Modern web site for OpenPrinting

@Daojoan@mastodon.social I am posting news about my work at #OpenPrinting regularly and did already for more than 5 years. I intentionally do this as a written blog and not as videos, as on the blog you can search text, easily navigate, you can copy example code and paste, auto translators work better on written than on spoken text, same for accessibility tools ... Or do you prefer watching an old graybeard talking, and for those who want video, I get interviewed here and then. https://openprinting.github.io/news/

The video, with its thumbnail telling that it is all about the XZ problem, started right away with that it all started with a jamming printer, so not knowing in these first seconds that they also explain the origin of FOSS, my first thought got "Was it me?" ... but seconds later I saw that it was about Richard Stallman. Both Richard and me, our work was triggered by printers, Richard created the concept of FOSS and I created OpenPrinting ... https://openprinting.github.io/OpenPrinting-News-September-2023/ #OpenPrinting

@sjvn@mastodon.social Reminds me to back in the early 90s, when I had my first 80386 with MS DoS (MicroSoft Denial of Service, 4.0?) and I had to add these lines, too, so that all the RAM got used.

Well different nowadays where you just boot from a Linux USB stick (Ubuntu, Fedora, ...) and everything gets set up to just work ...

Thanks for the bug report.

It is a bug in CUPS, as, with CUPS generally accepting and preferring UTF-8, it should also accept UTF-8 in the "Description" and "Location" fields.

Lasers are better in several points:

  • Cost per page is lower, even with current vendor lock-in for consumables
  • Printing is faster
  • Quality of text and drawing output on plain paper is higher
  • No drying and clogging of ink nozzels when not using the printer, also no need of frequent auto-cleaning due to this. Not using = No toner consumption

@deedend @publicvoit Note that a laser printer has very complex mechanics and for a proof of concept of constructing a DIY-friendly open-source hardware device, laser is not easy: You will either need to make a laser scanning the surface of the drum,or create a strip of LEDs, 8 inches wide and 600 LEDs per inch,to replace the laser (Brother printers work this way) This would be a dream Especially as there is no manufacturer any more known to me without this #enshittification#OpenPrinting

There is a case from CoolerMaster which fits a @frameworkcomputer@fosstodon.org 13 motherboard so that you can use it like a PC. I got a (now older) RISC-V motherboard from @deepcomputingio@bird.makeup 's CEO Yuning Liang on FOSDEM 2025 for testing printing on RISC-V and I got it in such a case. The case has Wi-Fi antennas (with adapter to connect to the board), VESA (100 mm) mount, stand. No RISC(V), no fun! #OpenPrinting #RISC_V

@oneloop @deedend @publicvoit ... Generally, for consumers laser printers are preferable, especially also when printing only a few pages. If you have a few photos to print, go to the drugstore for them. If you continuously print many photos, got for a printer which gets filled from bottles ("ecotank"). #OpenPrinting

@deedend @oneloop @publicvoit HP did really robust lasers in former times, and they sold a lot. If you get one old enough that it has no #enshittification, you will probably still get a good supply of third-party toners and refill services. Another recommended brand is Brother. They started the enshittification well later and so you can get newer unenshittified models. I do not know the start years of enshittification, though. #OpenPrinting

@oneloop @deedend @publicvoit My previous 3 posts were the pure hardware point of view. We see razor-and-blades models with vendor lock-in for all print technologies, also for laser. There was a recent report that Brother color laser's firmware makes the printer print with inferior quality if a third-party toner cartridge is detected. To really circumvent all this #enshittification the best solution is an older model (as said earlier here), or, for inkjet, Ecotank ... #OpenPrinting

Inkjets have also their advantages:

  • Cheaper to buy the device (but beware of razors-and-blades models, prefer ecotank or similar)
