@Em0nM4stodon@infosec.exchange I think it's different if it's something about your physical appearance that you chose vs not chose.

@vonExplaino@mstdn.social Engineering (and science more generally) has such a good brand name, that you slap it next to anything and that thing instantly sounds respectable. That's the reason why bullshit terms like "prompt engineer" exist.

@Okuna@social.tchncs.de @andree4live@mastodontech.de @Tutanota@mastodon.social At the same time, I'm not a fundamentalist. I do put effort into this without making my life impossible. Never ever interacting with something hosted by google: impossible. Not running on Google's hardware: possible.

@Mastodon@mastodon.social You know what billionaires *hate*? Things that can't be bought by a billionaire.

@jzb What are you saying, that parts of the establishment defend other parts of the establishment? Yes, we know.

@alfiekohn@sciences.social The communist parties in the USSR and now in China also had their political commissar in each company and branch of the military.
EDIT: maybe "commissar" isn't technically the correct name, I'd like to hear if anyone knows how these roles were named.

Pixels are currently the only smartphones where it's possible to compete with iPhone security.
Do you want to provide a link so I can read why this is the case, with technical details?
Sure, I can search on my own, but I won't know if the things I find are the things you're referring to.

@andree4live@mastodontech.de @Tutanota@mastodon.social I didn't. Unfortunately I'm still on Android as I haven't pulled the trigger for the move yet. I'm still in the process of learning what the options are 😕

@andree4live@mastodontech.de @Tutanota@mastodon.social Like I said, there's many phones where you can run GNU/Linux. You can even run GNOME

@Okuna@social.tchncs.de @andree4live@mastodontech.de The definition I care about is that Google doesn't have control over anything that matters to me. The hardware that I run matters to me, so I don't want it Google to have control over it.

@leanderlindahl@mastodon.social Sharing my text here in case people want variants:
On the "Share this page section" you should link to open platforms instead of closed ones: Mastodon instead of Twitter. The EU Commission already has an account on Mastodon, here's the link:

@petealexharris@mastodon.scot Yeah but we'll do it again. There's already models that run locally. A lot of the datasets are free, open weights models exist, etc. But yeah, it's similar dynamic all over again.

@rebel1725@fosstodon.org @andree4live@mastodontech.de @Tutanota@mastodon.social Google has the same power as in browsers. They have the most popular websites, and so they can push specifications in one direction by making their websites broken to anyone who doesn't follow their lead. "We the community can still maintain" is short sighted. You can maintain as long as Google doesn't decide they're going to make your life impossible.

@xgranade@wandering.shop I've started seeing this trend of "machine learning good but LLM bad" lately. It's amusing because I keep seeing people who try to articulate arguments why LLMs are somehow different than "machine learning" when in reality they just don't like the new use cases that opened up.
@pheonix@hachyderm.io self host! local models!
@till@ubuntu.social Hey on http://localhost:631/printers/ I've been getting the status Paused - "No destination host name supplied by cups-browsed for printer "Brother_HL_L2400DWE", is cups-browsed running?" Everything used to work perfectly fine. crups-browsed is active according to systemctl status cups-browsed.
