I wonder if Candace Owens is just going to fess up to being gay. She's capturing what's left of the right-wing media (obsoleted because another lesbian, Bari Weiss, turned the MSM into the right-wing media) and I suspect it's because she captured young people who got into conspiracy thinking during the pandemic and might not have a self-image as being right-wingers.

@Bfordham@infosec.exchange @blogdiva@mastodon.social I relate to a lot of what you’re saying but also my experience of being a coder who cares about ethics makes me at least a little suspicious of other coders. At the very least it’s bad to have *only* coders in an ethics discussion. So many of us have weird blind spots. Although often when a tech company does evil things, it’s above the objections of coders who tried to stop it from happening.

I couldn't find this story by searching "boy" or "kid" and maybe that's because the media likes to adultify black minor victims of police brutality. There was one article that echoed speculation on the part of law enforcement that this was suicide-by-cop in the headline. This person being an unarmed minor is the bigger story than that he allegedly pretended to draw his water bottle. https://cbsaustin.com/news/local/police-17-year-old-had-water-bottle-not-gun-in-fatal-austin-officer-shooting

@cwebber what helped me was realizing I could just... stop taking it if I don't like the effects. And to not think of it as strictly for binary trans people. Or what really helped was hearing about trans women who "boymode" for years. Because even if they're doing it for safety reasons or whatever I was more just worried I'd lose my ability to pass as male because I still like being able to do that. I don't mind people knowing I'm trans!

@futurebird@sauropods.win my theory is that in many cases, consciously or not, parents' gayday or transdar susses out their own kids early on and the subtle conversion therapy starts. Many queers (myself included) have stories that strongly suggest it doesn't start with any coming out.

@Hex@kolektiva.social This idea is also a customer-hostile belief that you really wouldn't get away with if you were actually trying to gain market share. Henry Ford (to whom this quote is often incorrectly attributed) wasn't a genius who knew what people wanted better than they themselves knew. "Visionaries" almost never know better than the end-user what the end-user really wants and even when their products take off, it's being used in a totally different way from what they imagined.

@JessTheUnstill@infosec.exchange for mine, it's absolutely before. I would have been way happier in my body if I transitioned way the fuck earlier, but I'd also almost certainly be poorer. Like, I make more money right now than I ever did before but that's from building on the connections I made beforehand. I absolutely had a harder time getting hired after starting HRT, though it could be a coincidence (usual caveats about applying overarching models to individual cases).

@kibcol1049@mstdn.social yeah this is the one area where using LLMs to write ostensibly human-readable prose has paid off for me. They need form letters. Letters that have been fired off over and over over the years. As you say, it's usually not even being read by humans anyway and AI likes the look of its own output (hopefully we can get a db of which insurance companies use which models to auto-deny).

@sysop408@sfba.social I don't like the insinuation that people only have issues with VCs out of ignorance. Many people dislike them specifically because of their experiences with the perverse incentives many of them create. But I agree that this is the wrong distinction. After all, plenty of businesses are wholly privately owned by genocidal maniacs.

@tom@tomkahe.com @cwebber@social.coop well, their answer is "they are about Cloudflare defining how a world-class, high-growth company operates and creates value in the agentic AI era" which means... nothing. Seriously, it makes me wonder if an AI wrote that too. Call me old-fashioned, but I'd want to make business decisions based on customer satisfaction and controlling my costs, not "defining" things for a mythical "era" I allegedly find myself in.

@JessTheUnstill@infosec.exchange there was so much misogyny at one of my first major jobs in tech too. Women getting treated worse, sexual harassers not facing real consequences, etc. This is the sort of thing that's hard to generalize because there some trans fems, even some who transitioned as adults who were never truly treated as men. But I think I kinda was. Maybe not 100% but I think I was mostly put in the man bucket.

@baldur@toot.cafe This is an issue I've had with fellow devs well before the AI boom - too many think of themselves as temporarily embarrassed tech moguls so don't feel any urgency about fighting for themselves as workers. And not enough would be bothered about us being treated better than other workers. And ironically, most of these people who frustrated me the most never even tried to strike out on their own to start their own businesses or have very good understanding of the business side of things.

And yeah, I think being trans is a contributing factor. When I was a kid, straight girls didn't like me for ~some mysterious reason~. (If you moved to Portland, OR, USA you will probably immediately find a trans girlfriend, the only catch is she might be kinda weird, and also our federal government is evil and scary)
