@gedeonm@mastodon.social "I care, but not enough to say anything" is quite the statement to make. Funnily enough I turned down a good paying job years ago at a marketing company that developed things for tobacco companies.

Before my recent trip to Austin for work, I set up #pihole and WireGuard for a #VPN on a #Raspberrypi 3 I had sitting around. So I was able to connect to my #Jellyfin server and stream some shows from my hotel. (I unplugged the HDMI cable on their STB and pulled it into my laptop). Also, was able to use a VPN with pi-hole on my phone while I was out and about. Friends, it's one of the simplest and most impactful things I've done with my #homelab so far. Also gave me access to my music. Highly recommend it. The rP3 handled it all with no issues at all

@blogdiva@mastodon.social I agree with what you're saying here. I would push back a bit on "devs are the last people" to be involved in ethics discussions. I 100% get what you're saying, and I think I get why. But, as a long time professional coder, knowing and understanding ethics is EXTREMELY important for us. Of course it's also extremely lacking. Which means... well maybe I don't really want to push back that much lol One problem is, "Does it make money" is the only question a lot of folks consider. Anyway... I thought I was going to disagree a bit but now I don't think I am. And it makes me a bit sad, honestly, that I can't disagree. Maybe I'm a weird mix. I'm older than most of my coworkers (just turned 50) and I've been writing code since the 80s. I'm also an ordained minister, and that may make me more concerned about ethics than some. But also, I think the lack of political education, and honestly basic empathy, is a plague in my industry

@futurebird@sauropods.win It really aggravates me when this happens with software I use for work. Jira LOVES to move things around. But it's not a toy, it's a tool I have to use for my job. It's like if someone came into someone's workshop and just moved all the tools around.

@blogdiva@mastodon.social not just that. 1 Samuel 21, David is on the run from Saul and he and his men are hungry. The priest gave them consecrated bread because that was all he had. No matter what you think, if all you have is “gay food” 🙄 you use it to feed the hungry.

Still no 100% clear option for me to avoid #AI with #Debian's decision. I had read that @gentoo@fosstodon.org had an anit-AI stance. But I just read the entire thing: https://wiki.gentoo.org/wiki/Project:Council/AI_policy It's the first OS statement I've read that specifically mentions the ethical issues. That makes me happy. No idea what will happen with the linux kernel in #Gentoo, but for the moment it seems like a legit option. Time will tell

Any suggestions for a #privacy respecting #health #app? Specifically I'd like something where I can easily log things like blood pressure and blood sugar readings so I can keep up with trends and such. I can always put it into a private note, but was hoping for something that would make it easier

@blogdiva@mastodon.social @thomasfuchs@hachyderm.io this takes me back to discussions about history in college. How all history is biased for exactly this reason: you curate what you include and don’t include. It’s about curation of information. Even with the best of intentions - meaning, trying to be truthful, not push “an agenda” - you still won’t ever tell the whole story

Mental health update - positive
At the age of 50 I'm just now getting on medicine for ADD. I've suspected I had this for years now. Both my boys are ADHD and, in learning more about it, my wife and I both have said "You know who else this sounds like, right?" But if you were an A student in the 90s, no school issues, no real discipline problems, no one looked at you as possibly needing help. That may sound bitter, but I promise I'm not upset. I get it. I didn't think I had anything going on, either. But I've also dealt with decades of thinking I just wasn't disciplined enough, driven enough, didn't care enough, etc. Turns out my brain was working against me. Anyway, yesterday I went to church and just listened to the sermon, didn't even care about checking my phone or looking up a reference, or anything else I normally would do. No exaggeration to say I could have cried. Apparently there's a way to shut down the constant noise in my head. Who knew? And it gives me A LOT more sympathy for my boys. #mentalHealth #ADHD #Aging

This is the type of code I enjoy writing, BTW. I wanted to download my audiobooks, so I was able to script it. Now I plan to set it up on my Audiobookshelf instance to automatically update with my purchases. World changing? Nope. Useful? Yep.
