👋 Hi, I’m @thesaigoneer@social.linux.pizza , our man in Danang.
🌱 No-coder +, perpetually between DE and WM

📫 Adjusted a gazillion of dots and still drinks beer. Since I've tried them all I've landed on KDE, dwm and a slew of other window managers. Quintessential distro-hopper, but running Slackware for over 3 years now. And counting. No issues with FreeBSD, Gentoo or Arch either. Prefer bare bones rolling. Into atomics and init systems as well.

You thought NixOS users were vocal? Listen to the Slackers chirping away, with version 16 presumably on the horizon 🤣 Let's check the mirrors and join in 🥳 #slackware

Next to enshittification I'd like to introduce 'enstupidification'. That one bothers me waaaayyy more. Phone:'Please enter your passcode, so you can't forget' Tablet: 'Every 24 hours we ask you to enter your pin, so you don't forget ' Banking app 'We noticed you have KDE Connect installed. Please uninstall, so you can use our mobile banking app'. 'You cannot use this service, without signing up'. Astonishing stupidity, wrapped in a, supposedly, security blanket. Statistically my time will be up in 35 years or so and I am happy to leave all that shit behind. Fuck it.

Think I've gone through 4 kernel updates in a week (7.0.4-7) on Gentoo and Slackware. All went without any notable hitch. We should be grateful and happy with such responsible and dedicated maintainers among us 👍🏻 I certainly am 🙏🏻

The idea that the KeePassXC database with your passwords is within your own ecosystem, and not on someone else's computer, is absolutely worth the minor hoops you have to crawl through. #keepassxc

For posterity. The distro I ran the longest was ArchLabs, for 18 months. Epic!
Next month it will finally be surpassed. Then i've been running Slackware KDE by @jloc0@mastodon.sdf.org for a grand total of 19 months. Thanks mate 🍻 !

Bug hunting 101: for some obscure reason Spectacle wasn't working in Slim 6.7. (Re)install tesseract and leptonica (available in your repo anyway), all good!

It's Wednesday here in Danang, time to get the sundries out there!
Hot off the press:
- The latest Librewolf (according to their git updated 3 hrs ago)
- Brave Origin of course

- A new addition: Vivaldi!

There is an excellent Sbo pkg for that, made by one of the Vivaldi maintainers. But if you just want an installable Slackware pkg, you can find it in this repo; I switched back to Vivaldi myself also.

As a consequence Brave-Origin will be discontinued by me at the end of June 2026.

I am starting to worry.
Dwl installed just fine, I compiled it from source. Learned how-to and applied the specific wlroots version in Gentoo. Applications I need are there. Five patches applied, all good. Even got noctalia-shell running. The project has been revived and a lot of patches have been updated to the latest version in the last month.
I stop tweaking now. Have to end the weekend on a high. Beer is cold. More next week!

This can go many ways. Just bcs my bootmanager y'day decided not see my new initramfs, I reinstalled Gentoo, with LUKS. All good. And bcs I've actually never used it, I'll be putting dwl on it today. There will be joy and pain, I am sure. So I stacked the fridge already. Better be prepared 🤣 🍻

Yep. Did it again. Couldnt have done it without this excellent guide, which is a write-up of a just as excellent YT video. This guy delivers and I really enjoyed setting this up yesterday: Fedora, btrfs, snapper, luks2 encryption. Obviously I changed something and used the Cosmic desktop for this experiment. Recommended!

Dream scenario. Whilst everyone is gloating over the new Nvidia RTX laptop, everyone also forgets the previous flop of the Arm powered laptops was not on the hardware, but bcs of the lack of decent software to run on it.
It's close to 2028 now and I pick one up for around 500 bucks.
And put Slackware ARM on it 😝

The unspeakable has happened. I've installed Aeon, the immutable Gnome by OpenSuse. Although KDE and WM's (dwm, mango) are at the core of my nerdiism, that ThinkPad deserved something else. Can't have an opinion without actually using it.
First impressions: clean, no fluff. Very good security (TPM encryption et al). And Suse was my first distro many years ago (the 2 books and 6 CD's boxes). Network shares very smooth, tomorrow some extensions. And forget about my usual theming, that previously always put me off. One thing: display scaling. I like 110 or 115%, but I'll guess I get used to 125 then. Yep, that old 😆

Strange the EuroOffice project started out on GitHub. That almost immediately disqualifies it for me, especially in these times. And let's not forget excellent alternatives like Forgejo. A completely missed opportunity. A pity. And stupid.

@jloc0@mastodon.sdf.org yes, lately, as I mentioned before I use the -Current iso. Sometimes I leave xfce on (to be removed later) or just deselect all DE's. Then git clone from Codeberg and start using my slackpkgplus.conf et al. Since you symlinked many things it's quite easy to find all pkgs for niri with slackpkg and then install. I've been refraining from displaymanagers (except with KDE) lately and just start mango or niri from the cli.

@jloc0@mastodon.sdf.org 😝 good you told me upfront. Then there's no additional need for me to install it. I used the 'normal' current iso, added some repos and then rsync'ed your Plasma slim. Which is all working great. And then I have one NUC with your liveslak, but basically running niri and mango on that. So what you combined in one iso now is what I have spread in two different installs 😂 But I'll boot up the liveslak anyway, to check if it all works.

@Tionisla@mastodon.bsd.cafe exactly 😂 Especially now Copilot (apparently) is appearing as co-commiter to the various repos. If you have a long standing project that has a lot to move over I could understand it, but starting out now on GH is just bad.

@gwenhael Of course that is a great way to do things. Just like my dwm is absolutely my dwm, no one has the same one. If you can automate the process like that it is very useful and I am sure @jloc0 does the same with his repos. As for running a slackbuild, where i pull down a deb manually and turn it into a Slackware pkg, I see no difference with getting the rpm and running rpm2tgz (and having the same functionality). But hey, that's me 😎

@jloc0@mastodon.sdf.org Yes, and in this particular case there's nothing in particular to Slackbuild 😂 Just wrappers around deb's or rpm's. Can imagine the fun when truly compiling from source, but I only do that with dwm. Period 😝

@rl_dane Yes, I obviously know about that one. But whereas I knew the main dev stepped down, I didn't know a new one stepped up 😅 At least, that's in the commit notes (a commit that was done by another dev?). So, it's a bit in flux, but not unmaintained, as of 4 months ago. I could start building a config and see how far i get 😝
