mastodon 4.7.3What I hear from young, new students in university is that "no one writes code anymore", and they use AI for every single piece of code they need to write. Assignments? They use AI to do them. Learning exercises? They let AI do them. Well, it's everywhere really. They open VSCode (or even Cursor these days, WTF) and, if not through a prompt, it's through that goddamn Copilot autocomplete.
My guess is that, in the future, there will be a boom in managing positions, like Product Manager, because those folks will not be technical enough to be Software Engineers. Even if they did study important stuff during the course, without writing code it's really hard to learn concepts. The "trial and error" process is very important for learning and it's a mistake to give that away.
Last but not least, besides this learning situation, there are ethical aspects about AI that are rarely questioned. How come an individual like me is more concerned about this than universities themselves? There should be policies about AI usage for assignments et al. We will not only graduate incomplete professionals, but we will slowly erase all the good notion about software and collaboration, to a point where people will no longer care about licenses, contribution, respect, etc.
Corporate work has drained all my energy. I have open source projects to take care of but lately I can only spend my free time having fun or practicing sports in order to recharge, and then start it all over again until I discharge. Hopefully this changes soon.
Claude Code is shitty, I'm not sure why people enjoy it so much.
There are companies trying to hire South American folks in order to train AI with Software Engineering knowledge. They pay in dollars so it's tempting for such folks to give in.
What's up with LLM enthusiasts saying "AI generates better code than yours"? First, that is so vague and worthless without a proper context. Second, so because you suck at programming now everybody needs to follow your shitty standards?
Product Managers should never touch code. Software Engineers exist to prevent stupid, greedy choices to infiltrate the code base. Without that protection layer you get an abusive product with shitty code.
Also on LLM usage, to me it feels like, above all things, it is the new branch of industrial pollution, specially considering how people are using it for anything stupid.
No Other Choice is a movie that translates very well the feeling of how LLM usage is imposed during late stage capitalism, even if indirectly. What a great movie that hits too close to home.
