I'm an internet thing, and a maker. Food nerd. Reader, writer, artist. My philosophy: less is more, unless it's chocolate. Also a friendly agitator.
Here to meet interesting people, make community, and get away from the algorithm-driven mindset.

RE: in the moment situations: Call out your bros right then and there. "Not okay, we don't do that here." Especially when it involves younger women.
It does not help to have a man pull you aside after the fact to see if you're okay; that's easy for him and a burden for the victim to manage someone else's feelings/inquiries.
What helps is when the bad behavior is called out and shut down, as it happens, by your peers/mgmt/people who are not in the minority group.

This. It's hard to take commentary from childless singles and DINKS in tech seriously when they do not factor in the caregiving and responsibility load of the average non-tech worker:
*Kids
*Aging parents
*Careers outside of tech
*Social circles outside of tech
*Community/volunteer work
*etc. other commitments/responsibilities
I know many intelligent people who are dead exhausted at the end of the day. Offloading the tech stuff is a legit need.

@CAWguy@thecanadian.social @TechTangents@dialup.space It's not on Grandma to be more discerning--Amazon should be held accountable for publishing shitty, misleading, and likely stolen content. She's from a generation when books represented a minimum standard that had to be met before publishing for the masses.

@jhooper@techhub.social @Arapalla@aus.social @briankrebs@infosec.exchange technology options available to the education space are few. W/o potential for billions to be made, investors aren't interested.
I work in public higher ed* IT and while there was a time when we developed in-house solutions, that's no longer the case. Vendor solutions, SaaS, all the way now. LMS platforms are not lucrative enough for strong competition.
*Federal and state funding cuts have left us miserably understaffed, though exec leadership is comfortable.

@Arapalla@aus.social @briankrebs@infosec.exchange Right? The education technology space is an underfunded, under-resourced target.
Whatever happened to the whitehat groups, the digital Robin Hoods of our era, taking (back) from the rich and giving to the poor?
We're just left with these twats who can only punch down because they aren't good enough to go after the corrupt institutions that can afford to protect their assets.

The org also doesn't:
-Let those who feel wounded, unheard, or misunderstood near its PR; it cleans up blog posts and forums, removing any hint of techbro behaviors, and enlists a communicator who understands what is required to help the interested-but-overwhelmed on the path of resistance against the bigger threat to technological sovereignty.

Where's the #LGMT merch? I'm thinking cozy mugs, beanies, craft bags, scarves and shawls, etc. 💛😁

@AndrewRadev I doubt it's "fear" driving them. Instead, a smarmy "we'll see about that" as they nonchalantly work to tear down the system from the inside.

My son is permanently disabled (since birth) and we've given up trying to find him independent housing because it's a constant whack-a-mole, crab scrabble, roulette spin. People do not understand how bad it is (US based).
We're both going to be effed if disability hits me earlier in life.
And no amount of planning is going to help because my income isn't high enough to build reserves (single mom), and there's no family or inheritance to fall back on.

An established organization does not get bogged down in "setting the record straight" activities, it aims higher.
Instead, the org focuses on what it can control: the narrative it owns, one that is only recognized through actions, not words.
The organization doesn't:
-Waste time writing white papers defending itself; it takes a hard look and doubles down on improvement.
-Worry about its ideas being stolen; it builds community and trust by offering what others do not.

Count me in as a masking expert making my way through corporate and now higher ed work environments. My unpaid side gig at work is as the support guru for our neurodivergent siblings (#adhd) who have the extroversion and verbal skills I lack but need help with organization and navigating the overwhelm.
I'm also a single parent of two adult autistic people, 1 w/ADHD & 1 w/ID. Between the three of us, we've got the spectrum covered!

@paka@mastodon.scot Wtf is wrong with these people? And those enabling them with their views?
Very sorry you all have this shit to deal with, too. What a depressing timeline we're in.

Have you ever opened a book and within the first 10 pages recognized yourself and/or the many wonderful nerdy-focused people in your life as an amalgam of the protagonist? Peggy Townsend's The Botanist's Assistant did just that for me.

@drahardja @parismarx This is what pisses me off to no end. Not only do they get to shirk responsibility, and avoid accountability, they get to push half-assed products to market, making bank on hype and BS alone.
Meanwhile, promising ingenuity in the hands of conscientious and morally-sound people languish, or are lost completely, because there isn't a fat-ego'd, big-talking prick at the helm to sucker wealthy stupid people.

@kimu@wandering.shop I now know of two people *under* the age of 50 (32 & 43) who have had it and both are screaming to go get the dang vaccine even if you aren't yet 50. The antiviral pills are the size of exotic beetles (2" long, thick baddies) and the rash is awful. I'll be bringing this up with my doc next week.
Stress has a strong correlation as well as other immune suppressing factors so don't assume you can put this off for later.

@imacrea It's hard to feel anything but contempt for a now very wealthy idiot who, once again, seeks VC backing to start what he's implying as a humble company, only for it to, once again, become a shitty platform that must focus on revenue for backers above all else.
I don't buy his take on this one bit.

@davidho@mastodon.world I met with a friend today and the grant her lab was aiming for didn't come through. They're working on the next one but she's now down to 60% paid time. By December it will be 0 and she'll be laid off.
The average person doesn't understand the precariousness of the science community's funding situation. I don't know how you all manage to keep doing the science we need right now, this is beyond bad.
