Public transit needs to be publicly funded. Eliminate fares. Reduce or eliminate policing. Eliminate fare gates and financial services for shit like clipper etc…. The money needs to go to providing essential services and maintaining the infrastructure to reduce failures to the absolute minimum down time.

@woo@fosstodon.org @danielbierstedt@norden.social @nixCraft@mastodon.social Your argument here is over semantics not substance. "AI" as implemented in this economic bubble is faking the automation of thought, but it can not generate ideas, or make judgements. "AI" contains no real intelligence and it relies entirely on people to create training data for it. It is incapable of truly replacing the workers it has been used to replace. What it is actually being used for is to weaken the bargaining position of labor.

This is an important listen.

Graham Platner does not have generational wealth. He’s a regular person running for office.

We all need to be thinking about doing this or supporting someone like us that is doing so. It is hard but only people like us - people who work for a living - should be in government.

This war with iran is going to drive more people to public transit as well. We need to shift our thinking about all of this now. What do I mean? The prosperity that has shored up and papered over the gross inefficiencies in our society is eroding fast and the war with iran is probably the beginning of the end of petrodollar dominance. This means that all the batshit fucking crazy bullshit people have believed about capitalism is going to be exposed as the bunk that it is. BART running off of fares is one of those things. Dependence on marketrate housing is another. These hugely inefficient ways of delivering this shit were shored up by prosperity. With that gone they aren’t going to function at all. Notably they’ve already been falling apart for years at this point while everyone is in demial about the cause. This war with iran is gonna expose these weaknesses even more. With bart right now it is high gas prices pushing more riders while the system is inadequately maintained and failing almost daily.

So this year we will probably have a measure on the ballot to raise money to shore up public transit. This is a bandaid. Reliance on fares for public transit increases costs to the system through policing, fare gates, and financial services with outside vendors. Fares are also a regressive tax on the poor who need transit to get to work. And most importantly it creates uncertainty in annual revenues while public transit has steady, fixed costs, which makes the system more vulnerable to periodic crises like covid. Covid began in 2020. BART is still failing to recover from it. All public transit would be more efficient and more reliable if it received adequate public funding to run, and it would better serve those who most need it if fare was covered by public funding. I mean jesus fucking christ, the only viable argument against free ridership is that trains would be more crowded. Then fund the system to meet real demand. The rich have to fucking pay taxes. We need this infrastructure.

@fembot @seachanger The impetus for this has been an important thing in North America for a very long time. So important that storm water control, and ground water recharge have been mandated via the C.3 requirements for construction since the late 1990's. In California where we have allowed corporate lobbyists to short circuit our planning process with SB330, the C.3 requirements are still enforced regardless of the significant amount of deregulation we've had on the development process. And due to issues of storm water in San Francisco a major lawsuit in the early 2000's drove the green school yard movement there, resulting in educational gardens to replace asphalt, and capture rainwater. If you are really into this stuff you can also check out the work done by Brad Lancaster in Arizona on urban forestry and using rainwater capture to maintain it. https://www.harvestingrainwater.com/

Americas tech sector is such garbage. I am sick of it.

When I manually select or adjust something, automation should NOT change that setting back.

If I turn off "smart features" they should be fucking OFF.

If I want to use a phone without the bluetooth earbuds, the earbuds should not take over the audio in the middle of a fucking call EVER.

The problem is that the device and the software are never considered the property of the user. This has much deeper problems than just these annoyances.

It is why we can not even trust our devices as they are used to spy on us.

We need to destroy these companies and forbid public-private partnerships with any security agency - especially those within the US security state.

@skedarwarrior Maybe. I agree that Windows 11 fucking sucks. But you are conflating technical decisions about software development with the phenomenon of AI in the broader economy - what I refer to as the "business plan". These are not at all the same thing. What the OP posted above has nothing to do with technical decisions about software. There is no technical solution for this. This is due to massive levels of investment in a technology which is intended to increase opportunities for financial fraud and theft for the richest investors, destroy our jobs, steal our products from us, accelerate war crimes and killing, and facilitate more surveillance and control. None of this is about the tech. It is about the intent of the people funding it.

Housing is overly privatized and the financial sector is overdependent upon it for profits.

This is why we have a housing crisis.

The YIMBYs and Abundance people pretend that these are not the problems and that "planning" is the problem.

The result of the deregulatory agenda pushed by industry front groups like CA YIMBY is ironically a more fucked up planning process due to the conflicts that bills like SB330 create when they empower developers to push profit maximization even further. On top of this the underlying problems of homelessness and unaffordability persist and deepen.

David Sirota demands specificity from the critics of socialism since the only socialism offered in America consists of popular government programs that people depend on. This is the right ask: “Tell us specifically what you have a problem with.” Because the specter of “evil communism “ is just a bullshit scare tactic meant to prevent medicare for all from happening, to lower taxes on billionaires, and to rollback regulations while bailing out banksters and technofascists with public resources. https://www.levernews.com/what-socialism-critics-cant-admit/

@skedarwarrior They have openly stated time and time again in order to drive up their valuations and pull in even more outside money that AI is a job killer. They are laying off people performatively in order to create this narrative. As far as that goes, only suspecting that this is their intent is crazy.

@vga256@mastodon.tomodori.net i don’t agree that vIi was particularly innovative. Ultima iv was the innovator and the games after it each built off of that. Ultima v already has much of what makes ultima vii cool which in my view makes it the high point of the series. I believe all of the elements that people like about vii were already put out there in v and then improved upon iteratively. The deeper conversations, schedules, narrative elements, and so on. And the problems with the series also remain throughout. The monotonous grind of combat and leveling up really turns me off from even replaying these games. What i am getting at is that I think that you’d trap yourself on this project having to write about the entire series and retelling the story of origin. Just writing about vii would be very limited.

Mass shooters in the US are born from Libertarianism. The idea that you alone are the only one who is right and that you must impose your will on all those bad people through the barrel of a gun. Support for recall elections is the same. The idea that all those stupid voters fucked us by voting wrong so we must force a new election until I get what I want out of it. YIMBYism is the same. This is the idea that only the market rate housing developers should have any say about what gets built and that anyone who wants to exert influence over development is a NIMBY. The Abundance agenda is the same. It is a rejection of society. Disbelief that anyone else but you has a valid perspective. Distrust of law, institutions, governance, everything. This is why Fascism rose so quickly.

One of the biggest piles of steaming shit in the American psyche is the sense that Liberalism is primarily about Individual Freedom. This is where Libertarianism comes from. Liberalism balances collective responsibility with individual freedom. Libertarianism in the US is anathema to any form of governance and social organization because it eliminates all collective responsibility and solidarity in favor of an individual's rights over everyone and everything else. Libertarianism only has meaning as advocacy for individual rights within a functional Liberal government. It is not an actual political philosophy with a workable theory of social organization and governance. Libertarianism is also not a revolutionary ideology because solidarity has no real place in it. This is why Libertarianism has been pushed by billionaires in the US, and why the US is falling apart with their ascendance. It is merely a cult of self above all others. In light of this consider how isolated and narcissistic we all are.
