Und nun mal zu den guten Nachrichten: Noch ist nicht alles verloren!
Bei mir in der Gegend legt jemand seine ausgelesene Zeitung feinst gefaltet an der Bushaltestelle ab, damit auch andere sie lesen können.
An jedem einzelnen Morgen ❤️

Some more context (1/x): German Father-in-law's biological mother gave him up for adoption. Decades later, he found her family, she already had passed. No one knew his father, but she left behind pictures - showing her with this man. And from the same pictures series, portaits with his signature on it. First one reads "Will You Remember Edward J. Garth", second one "I no speak [unreadable] - Edward J. Garth".

(4/x) My father-in-law spent basically his whole life searching for his roots.
(His early-childhood odyssee including being evacuated from war-struck Berlin as a two-weeks-old not even mentioned; this alone could, and propably will, fill a whole book).
So now here I am, basically without any genealogy experience, trying to give an old man some kind of peace. All we have is this set of pictures with the name "Edward J. Garth" on it.

(5/x) Addition: Of course, Edward may also have been from another country like UK, AUS or NZ.
I'm kind of US-biased here because my father-in-law often heard his mother's relatives saying "Edward the American". Also, Wiesbaden was a center of US activities after WWII, afaik.

(2/x) Went searching for "Edward J. *B*arth" first.
Turns out, there was in fact a prisoner-of-war camp in the German Town of Barth*. This is where a US/UK airman and a German interpreter could actually have met during war.
Museum staff researched but could find neither her name (Irmgard Steppat) nor a matching "Edward J." in their documents.

(3/x) Later, I realised: The child was born in November 1944, so the parents must have met in early 1944. Not a great time for a US soldier to casually walk into a photo studio in the middle of Wiesbaden* with his German girlfriend!
But even if the pictures really were taken *after* war (which I now am almost certain of - what do you think?) and this man is not his father, it would be great to find clarity about the photographs and the name "Edward".

@stacey_campbell@aus.social Thanks for your thoughts. I am no military historian at all, but i found https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:M1943_Field_Jacket.jpg - looks like it, doesn't it?

@sarae@ecoevo.social "Birth Mom meets Edward J **rth in early 1944" - hm, I doubt that. At this time, we're in knee-deep in war. A US soldier in the middle of enemy territory, SS everywhere? Walking into the photo studio in Wiesbaden in US gala uniform with his German girlfriend? This is why I fear he might not be the father. I strongly suspect the photos were taken post-war.
Nevertheless, it would be great to clarify who Edward was and what was between them.

@angelfeast@blorbo.social Thank you very much for the information! I may need some time, but I'll check that database.
I wouldn't completely rule out the US/CA confusion, not even today :D
Update: His dress looks very similar to the 1943 field jacket, which then would be US - what do you think?
