I tested some solar panels (for your next #MeshCore or #Meshtastic project) so you don't have to. https://brunoarine.com/blog/i-v-curve-of-a-few-solar-panels/

The #Meshtastic / #MeshCore rivalry is pure nonsense, just like saying that hammers are better than screwdrivers. MT is awesome for adhoc mobile groups and discovering nodes when I'm out and about; MC is perfect for large scale, stationary community meshes. It's never been an either/or thing. This is your tribal brain talking. Free yourself from it and enjoy.

#Meshtastic and #Meshcore are the gateway drug. #Reticulum (or something similar) should be the endgame.

If we're serious about network resilience and real independence from third-party infrastructure, not just being hobbyist cool, we need a technology-agnostic convergence layer rather than depending on LoRa for everything.

Historical moment for the #meshcore scene in Brazil: we're running some tests before installing repeaters around São Paulo metro area. The towers are so well positioned that we could get a zero-hop link between companion devices 75 km (46 mi) apart.

If you're nearby, give it a try! Preset "Australia SA, WA".

@_elena pretty much my journey since birdsite was bought! On the #selfhosting part, though, I went with my own home server running #FreeBSD (ZFS is awesome!). And regarding #meshtastic, I must warn you that it's a drug. This year I went from "zero" to "regional community builder / crazy dude deploying stealth nodes in trees" in a matter of months 😅 Just so you know what to expect!

I'm going over the "ziglings" (exercises to ease your entry into the #zig language world).

I can feel, in slow motion, my neurons flailing their arms in excitement as they learn they have a new favorite programming language.

For some days now, the #lora network in the region has seriously degraded. Almost every repeater became isolated, and the ones that still hold their links noted a degradation of around 8 dB.

A question to the experts: could any environmental event cause this? We got a strong temperature inversion lately, but I'm unsure this is the culprit.

@Crazypedia@mypocketpals.online Make sure the frequency didn't change when you moved it to channel 1. By default, the app sets the frequency based on channel 0's name. Just pin it and you should communicate properly with everyone else, even if their channels are not numbered like yours (and provided you're using the same keys, or course).

@el@tilde.zone I started with #Meshtastic, fell in love with it, realized that it wouldn't scale for all the cities in my region without a whole lot of optimization (easy) and people's common sense/willing to use reasonable settings (hard), then switched to #MeshCore and couldn't be happier!

I should be studying and honing my modern #Cpp skills right now. But how can I do that while #Zig's alure is so much stronger?

Interview with @andrewrk@mastodon.social, Zig's creator.

@sirhopcount@fosstodon.org And this is why you should never use the MIT license for your projects. It's absolutely vulnerable to trademark and patent attacks. Prefer the Apache license, or better yet, GPL.

@alec@perkins.pub I don't know the history, let alone the grayer areas of software license, but isn't it possible to ship binary blobs separately in a GPL project (just like Ubuntu does)?

@sesivany@social.vivaldi.net I see you are in Brno (at least according to the screenshot 😅) I just read a few articles in a Czech blog about the Meshtastic scène around there. Is it still a thing, or have the region migrated to MeshCore? Would love to hear your experience.

@marsik@witter.cz That's a fair point. But as far as I can tell, Reticulum goes a step further by implementing cryptography at the network layer by default. Not to mention the multiple encapsulation every time we traverse different interfaces (LoRa then IP then serial then LoRa again...) So it's a matter of taste and use cases, as always (hence the "something similar" in my original post).

@marsik@witter.cz Sorry, I meant that IP would require different software independently implemented from each other for encapsulation, whereas Reticulum bridges a number of interfaces with encapsulation implemented within a single, opinionated framework. Still a good fall back.
